Acronyms
A lot of users throw around acronyms on webdiplomacy and I was wondering what some of them meant.

CD - Civil Disorder
NMR?
WTA?

There are more but these are three of the top of my head...is there a list anywhere? Perhaps there should be.

Also diplomacy (even on the board games) uses abbreviations for all the countries. Does the site have comprehensive list of those?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

NMR: No Moves received
WTA: Winner takes all
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

PPSC: Points per supply centre
DMZ: De-militarised zone
NAP: Non-aggression pact
E: England
F: France
etc.

Then all of the provinces have acronyms, normally three letters, often the first three in the name (Eg Constantinople is con.) and often capitalising seas: Black sea is BLA, Norwegian sea is NWG.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

S as in ENG S Bre or ENG S Bre-Pic means support.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Others refer to people eg TMG: TheMasterGamer, TGM:TheGhostmaker, figle: figlesquidge, llama: thewonderllama etc.

What are the (official?) 3 letters acronyms for: Norway, Norvegian Sea, North sea?
general (100 D)

I remember there was a lot of confusion between Tyrolia and Tyrrenheim Sea (as both start with TYR :P)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Nor, NWG and NS are the ones I use. I'll check to see what the rulebook says.

NTH is North Sea
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

My rulebook uses: Nrg for Norwegian Sea, Nwy for Norway and Nth for North Sea.

Stephen Agar uses NWG, Nwy and NTH.

I don't personally learn acronyms for places: sensible acronyms are easy to construct, and then can be interpreted if needs be by the context. (A Livonia and A Liverpool are clearly different, for instance)
Ursa (1617 D)

I (try to) use an S for seas: NTS, BLA/BLS, BAL/BAS.

Norway: NWY
Norwegian Sea: NWG

And Tyrolia is simply TYR while the Tyrrhenian Sea is TYS.

And don't forget Richard Sharp, the GOD of Diplomacy (his book is called 'The Game of Diplomacy')
gjdip (1084 D)

How much of Richard Sharp's theory is still valid? The book is fun to read and it seems like he was still coming up with openings in the late 70s. Do people still go by what he said?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I don't think you can take anybody's ideas in diplomacy too seriously. It is more important to have experience and a feel for the game than to read and defend a theory of "how it should be played", which is actively damaging.

I would suggest you read articles, but more as a way to gain experience and a feel without playing (and loosing) than as a substitute for experience.
gjdip (1084 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
Certainly, there are not many substitutes for experience. The theories, however, can save you some painful experiences, especially when you're starting out as a player.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
One theory ain't gunna help that, you need to just read widely about everything to get a feel for the game.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
yeah, if you take Sharp's book as the text book on how to open and play you are doomed, but it is a fantastic way to read up and familiarize. It does give you a sense of what kinds of things go on and exist in the mind's of other players.

Never bad-mouth Richard Sharp.
gjdip (1084 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
Reading widely is not the issue but reading the good stuff. The board hasn't changed in 50 years but those with experience sometimes write about it. There are hundreds or thousands of articles available and reading through all of them may or may not be helpful.

Calhamer must be smiling.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
Sure. I'm not even sure, for instance, that the Lepanto is in "The Game of Diplomacy." So yeah, you need some supplemental material.

The Greatest Baseball Team Ever (According to RBI Baseball)
10 teams in a three-game season, and then four teams advance to the playoffs... one team per decade, one team per franchise, the teams:
1908 Cubs, 1911 Athletics, 1927 Yankees, 1936 Cardinals, (1940's skipped, since best players were off at war) 1954 Giants, 1965 Dodgers, 1975 Reds, 1986 Mets, 1991, 2004 Red Sox. Who will win?

Better forum software
Could we have a forum that works like a forum instead of...all this? It'd make keeping track of threads simple instead of an Orwellian/Kafkaesque/Dadaist (??) nightmare.
