A lot of users throw around acronyms on webdiplomacy and I was wondering what some of them meant.

The Greatest Baseball Team Ever (According to RBI Baseball)
10 teams in a three-game season, and then four teams advance to the playoffs... one team per decade, one team per franchise, the teams:
1908 Cubs, 1911 Athletics, 1927 Yankees, 1936 Cardinals, (1940's skipped, since best players were off at war) 1954 Giants, 1965 Dodgers, 1975 Reds, 1986 Mets, 1991, 2004 Red Sox. Who will win?

Do you care about honour?
If a guy does not once attacked you and was always loyal to you and at the end of the game when you have the opportunity to stab him and won or agree with the draw. What's your choose?

Better forum software
Could we have a forum that works like a forum instead of...all this? It'd make keeping track of threads simple instead of an Orwellian/Kafkaesque/Dadaist (??) nightmare.

not ironic enough, hellalt

abgemacht your opinion is false
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jan 10 UTC
It's false that I love this forum layout?
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
not that opinion, the opinion that causes you to love this forum layout
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jan 10 UTC
But, I love it BECAUSE it's an "Orwellian/Kafkaesque/Dadaist (??) nightmare."
Acosmist (0 DX)

You judged that that was lovable and that opinion was false, try to keep up here boyo
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
but love is subjective... you can love something that is poor at carrying out its function...
You simply can not judge that love is false Acosmist... you're gonna have to back down on this one : )
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jan 10 UTC
I disagree.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jan 10 UTC
That was to Acosmist, not dave
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Nope, dave, you misread. And I said so little! How could you misread that? To love something is to judge it lovable and then to experience the subjective feeling of love for it. I can't deny your subjective feeling of love but I sure can criticize your judgment!

Happy to help.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jan 10 UTC
Ah, it is so clear to me now! Kestas, please change the forums immediately!
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
you can criticize the judgement, but that it is "false" is incorrect.
No one can judge whether something is lovable in someone else opinion...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Jan 10 UTC
No, no, Dave, you're clearly wrong.
hellalt (80 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Dave, he criticized the judgement.
He said your opinion was wrong. not your love.
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Lovable as in "worthy of being loved."

abgemacht already took this pretty seriously and I think maybe we should sedate him

he's getting very worked up about it

have some tea, sir

hellalt's on my side, the correctness of my judgment is all but assured <_<
Hibiskiss (631 D)

I make posts and then can never find the replies and since things go off topic I can't even find the threads at times without excessive searching.

Oh well, just means I hit and run topics and never get to know anyone.
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
That was pretty much my point, Hibiskiss; it'd be nice (especially since searching my own posts no longer works) to have a real forum and be able to do real forum things.
hellalt (80 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
like what?
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
an ignore feature so that, say, if some Greek annoys you you can hide his posts

:hugs:
hellalt (80 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
That would be useful, yeah.
I hate Greeks!
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
sheesh, i was only real arguing for the sake of it... don't get the definition out on me!
I suppose I just thought that you can't say someone's opinion is wrong on something like love... something might be lovable to one person but not another, there's no definitive judgment on if something is lovable except from the individual.
Hibiskiss (631 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Yeah, I was agreeing with you Acosmist. Subscribe feature would be great.
Acosmist (0 DX)

Honestly, once I go to sleep and the threads I've posted in now are way down the list, I just ignore them. It's like they go down the...memory hole :puts a pair of sunglasses on:
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
02 Jan 10 UTC
There is the thought of using dedicated forum software instead of the custom webDip forum we have now, but for various reasons this isn't practical

Here are the possibilities for making the existing forum more usable:
- Treating threads you haven't read, threads you've read, threads you've ignored, and threads you've responded to differently (I think if done well this would be the best and simplest way)
- Splitting the thread up into different sections (I don't like this way so much, and can't visualize how it'd look or function)
- Increasing moderator abilities for the forum and making live game announcements against the rules
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
I don't see why you can't have the forums hosted somewhere else with free forum software. Too much bandwidth?
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
02 Jan 10 UTC
In part yes, not so much bandwidth but resource use, this forum is very lightweight (especially compared to the mammoth dedicated forums like phpBB and vB).
Plus there's the problem of integration with this site, making sure user accounts here and in the forum are the same and that posts from the forum are shown on the home-page, and that it fits in with the rest of the site, otherwise it's just another site like forum.webdiplomacy.net (the developers forum)

Also there are licensing issues, this software is AGPL but phpBB and most other forum software are GPL, and the two licenses are incompatible. That doesn't really mean they couldn't be used but it does mean we'd have to be careful about tying in too closely

We COULD just have a separate discussion site <_<

hellalt, you are very funny when you try.

This forum actually I think is very good. The ability to have "tracked threads" might be a good addition, but I'd hate for it to become sectioned and start making different communities: an off-topic community, a diplomacy strategy community etc.
Perry6006 (5409 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
I like this forum much better than much of the other game sites I've been around too.
Cant agree more with TGM, on if you start sectioning up the forum. That would be really bad.
Sendler (418 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
I would like sections/categories.
Like you could click view all or just click 4 of 6 categories maybe. (with checkbox on top of forum page)
like you wouldnt have to view live game threads if you dont feel like it, or other game threads, or off topic discussion etc
figlesquidge (2131 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
That would be a good way of doing it, so everyone could choose what sort of things they want on the page. This would also help keep the whole community together.
Also, I don't think it would break up the site to split the forum. People would still generally post all round.
Tracking: Not a bad idea, and not too hard to do. The only issue with that would be the increased server load.
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Yes it would be a tragedy if discussion weren't obnoxiously difficult

OK...
