Retreating
What happens when two powers try to retreat their losing units to the same place? Do both get disbanded? If one has an alternative line of retreat, does it get sent there automatically?

Does anyone know?

Did the atomic bombs save lives or end them? How costly would a U.S. invasion of Japan have been? Were the atomic bombs good or bad? Discuss. Assume that the Cold War would have still occurred, and that the U.S. received no support from any other Allied nations.

Strange goals for this game - Details below
.
So, in trying to keep someone from invading me, I was trying to explain that I had 2 supports for my center, and he had 2 supports. The conversation that followed I found very interesting. i explained that even if EVERYTHING went his way, the most he would get would be 2 centers... And it should be noted this conversation took place in the fall of 1902, VERY early in the game.

ME: While you are patient waiting for those 2, what are the other large powers accomplishing? Something to think about. Assuming everything falls your way, what do you get?

Him:What do I expect to get? A four-way Country A, B, C and D draw. I'd be okay with that.

Me: Sigh... I suppose some people play for the draw, rather than the win. I doubt your 3 others will agree to that, but good luck. You were lucky enough to draw Country A, you should take advantage of its offensive capabilities. Oh well. Good luck.

Him:I'm sure you have trouble relating to that, from what I see in your record. And the same may be true for a couple of the others. But you may see by my own record that I don't stab for wins. Could I have ten wins by now? Sure. Stabbing for a win is actually pretty easy. So easy in fact, that in a previous Dip life I got tired of stabbing and winning. I've decided to try to gain satisfaction by creating and keeping strong alliances. Will I get stabbed a bunch of times by my allies along the way? Sure. But my goal is to be the only player in the top 50 HoF with far more draws than wins.
Thoughts?

Well, it is a goal, and it is okay for him to play b that I think. Specially since he is honest about it.

Hey, I'm not the player in question, but my goal is always an alliance win.

ofc, I have more defeats then anything (if you count my 0 sc draw as a defeat, which you should)

In my opinion, there's way too many draws around here.
mentat (153 D)

It's not really playing the game as it ought to be played - the object of the game (that is, each individual game someone plays) is to control 18 SCs. If you're playing to draw then you're not playing to win, which is effectively playing to lose.

/draw

or playing to tie

I enjoy alliance wins. They are rewarding. But if you get to 18 before your ally that isn't a stab. Also if you are stuck at 16 and just sneak into an allies centers for the win that is barely a stab. But winning is the goal. I think most people play for themselves. Many don't realize that the overall goal is to win and take it as a shock when after 8 years an alliance is broken. I have played 1 game where I went 17/17 with an ally for a draw and when I think about it I probably could have won it. Winning a game is just so much more rewarding than typing /draw and that command should really never be used unless a game has to end (such as a 1 hour game that can't be finished) or in the case of a stalemate.

It's unorthodox, but it's not illegal. At best it's an interesting goal, at worst it makes the player in question that much more predictable.

"...it makes the player in question that much more predictable."

You make that sound like a negative, only. As the player in question, I can tell you that my allies and potential allies seem to find that predictability to be a source of confidence in their ability to trust me.

Onar (131 D)

Honestly, I think that's an admirable goal. But not something I could ever really pull off... Maybe one day, I can work with the player in question. I promise that if anyone genuinely offers me something like that, I won't stab him.
DipperDon (6457 D)
20 Jan 09 UTC
I've read another thread where people complained about "riff-raff" who stab willy-nilly. Some posters seemed to think that was the wrong way to play the game. Others seem to think that my not stabbing my allies is also the wrong way to play the game.

But there is no right or wrong way to play Diplomacy. Each person can play to win or draw or even to be eliminated as they choose.

Furthermore, the ppsc system does nothing to encourage someone stabbing for a win. There is simply not enough points-based reward to stab for the 18th center. Even in a wta game, if I feel personal satisfaction by gaining a draw with one or more other players, I see nothing wrong with that.

My goals and methods are not for everyone. They are for me. I don't expect others to agree and follow them. But I don't see how they are against either the rules of Diplomacy, or the spirit of the game.

One thing that bothers me is when you see a player who can easily win the game, but instead they choose to give some weak power supply centers behind them as they move foward. If you can win a game and plan on it, why not just do it.

I hate it when people give away SC's, period. Unless they haven't gotten those yet, it is completely against every form of logic I can think of.

Why let your enemy have it when you can give it to your ally?

Personally, i find myself agreeing with Dipper. At some point, stabbing feels horrible to do to an old ally.
Just think of what would happen if all of us diplomacy players became real world statesmen.

Does a supporting unit defend the same as a holding unit? I mean, If I'm supporting a region and someone attacks me, do I lose and retreat? or It just break the support?

Conversation History
I was wondering if there was any way to access the history of a conversation in the Global thread beyond the maximum amount that it will show normally. There was a certain element of the discussion that we're looking to readdress in order to foster a discussion regarding some 'game etiquette' in an outside forum, namely some accusations of slander being brandied about, but we don't have access to the logs to indicate the validity of such accusations.

Gaming experience
How would compare the experience of playing Diplomacy online versus playing in real life? I haven't had a physical game of Diplomacy ever, so I would like to hear your opinions! E.g. I guess "global chat" is more promiment in a physical game, and "private chat" more cumbersome.

Another hypothetical WWII scenario
How much longer would the war in Europe been if Hitler had managed to conquer England. How long would it have taken for America to liberate England, assuming they had the full cooperation of the Brits? This is hypothetical, so please don't argue over the plausibility of Operation Sea Lion. (Germany's plot to invade England)
