Help me buy a scientific computing desktop
Inspired by the other thread, can I ask you guys for some more advice? I'm looking to buy a desktop for $1000-2000, to use for my work in the lab. Almost every project I do has a serious numerical computation component to it, so I want to max out on computational power. I don't care about graphics though.

Most or least favourite to play
I was just curious what people's most and least favourite countries to play were and why. Does it correspond to the rankings of which countries win the most games?

Fave used to be France, but I'm increasingly liking the intrigue of Germany. Austria just is terrible in my hands.

I hate them all but when I started dip it was FTF and I got austria the first 3 times I played. I will never forget.

My favourite is Italy, and my least favourite is France. My worst country (as in, the one I do worst with) is probably Russia. Or maybe England.
I realize it's been made a bunch, but I looked back a bunch of pages and couldn't find it.
I'm not sure which my favourite is right now. Somewhere between the western triangle and Italy. Austria is by far my least favourite. I always get my stabs on Italy wrong and never can build fleets.

I like playing England, although I always seem to stall at around 13 centers. Turkey is good as well...if you can survive until 1904 or 1905, you got a good chance of at least making the draw.

I have a bad record with France, even though it's supposed to be one of the easier powers to play. Italy is fun, but it's been my experience that an alliance with Russia is essential...that A/I never lasts long enough, mistrust always festers.

In general, I prefer the naval powers over the more inland ones.

Austria is my least favorite. Almost completely landlocked, home SCs always initially under attack, few naval options. That said, I think a Diplomacy player's skill can be measured by how well he does as Austria.

My favourite is Austria and my worst is Austria or Russia.

All the rest I really enjoy, probably in this order: France > Turkey > Germany/England/Italy.

Austria is my favorite and it tends to go very well or very bad. It usually depends if Italy is with you for the long haul. I think it's absolutely essential to stay friends A/I until after the mid game, for both nations. A lot of players aren't patient enough with Italy though and I guess Italy has options.. sometimes you just can't align yourself with your neighbor ;)
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

I don't mind any other country, but I absolutely hate playing England.
I seem to do poorly with France and generally well with Austria. It probably has to do with how little I've played France. I used to set my preferences on PBEM as basically 'whatever' and usually end up with Austria so I played it quite a bit.

I like Russia, too. Turkey and Italy not so much. England can go either way.

Interesting that nobody's said Germany yet for favorite or least favorite. I like Germany because you get to have meaningful communication with everyone off the bat (except possibly Turkey) and, if all goes well, you'll be setting the pace of the game. From your likely two first year builds, you can continue to make plays for Belgium, Scandinavia, or take your pick of invading Russia/France/England. The downside of playing Germany is that all it takes is an errant army to sneak into Munich to ruin your day.

My least favorites to play from a diplomatic perspective are Italy and Turkey, because most people will just treat you as a nuisance, although they can be fun to play tactically.

My favorite is Germany, and my least favorite is Italy or England... can't really decide.
The country I do worst with is probably Russia (even if I do like playing as Russia quite a lot).

I am a fairly defensive player, so naturally I prefer Turkey and England. I can't stand drawing Russia.

Would someone please be so kind as to list the nations in that order / ranking of a which ones win the most games to those that win the least
For me the hardest to play / ones I have the least success are
Italy, Austria and Germany
Russia is difficult but I'd like to delude myself that I'm getting better with Russia with my "it's not two fronts, North and South, but three, North, centre and South and you can go hard on one front, moderately aggressive on another and defensive / or better have peace on the third.
Like to play England and France

Still that's without allowing much for the influence of diplomacy within a game, good diplomacy and a good ally can make a huge difference, bad diplomacy, duplicitous ally's or just being unlucky and ending up isolated in the alliance groups means disaster, irrespective of which nation I have

Claesar (4660 D)

It's right there.
According to the second website, this is the order (for solo wins):
France-Turkey-Germany-Russia-England-Austria-Italy

F(TG)(RE)(AI), approximately.

Of course results will vary based on your sample selection.

Thank you very much.
France is not so successful in my hands, but I do enjoy playing France
Is it at all possible to get stats from webdip? That would be pretty interesting.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
06 Dec 15 UTC
We've posted them before. From memory, for all time, France and Russia are the top, and Italy is last, I think.

I think italies have been doing better recently (I think a few forum threads and good SoW commentary has helped), so I think the stats might look different over the past year or so. Or maybe not?

If you want all the game results, http://webdiplomacy.net/ghostRatingData.zip is updated every time GR is generated. You could plot stats from that (but you have to process it first, since it's one line per player, not one line per game).
To answer the original question:

Yes.
Plot twist: Jake drew Austria.
Yes, I'm an idiot.
I like England and Turkey about the same. I like the inaccessibility of both countries.
I like Germany and Austria because they both require a lot of press and they interract with every other pow. Russia would be my fifth choice because I am not really that good tactically and usually end up surrendering the north to work from the south. Last France and Italy. France is supposed to be a powerhouse, bit I need usually get overwhelmed when attacker come kno
cking. With Italy I usually just cannot get that fifth center. I have done well with Italy in the past, but it is a big challenge for me. <You are not getting enough sleep when you fall asleep mid post>. Good night all.

Idea for a Diplomacy Game
I know there is a vdip variant where you only have one SC but I think it would be interesting to get a game going on here where It has unique rules.
1. You can only move one unit per turn. And you can only move additional units for every SC you gain.
2. By Spring of the 2nd year you could be moving 2 units, and so on and so forth.
anyone ever done anything like that?

Is this the longest game ever?
This game has been going for 2 (100 in game years) years as it is the 2012 world cup. It must be the longest or most back and forth game ever. In fact Austria was down to 1 supply centres near the 1/3 mark but is still alive! Imagine the commitment. If anyone has spectated all the way through I congratulate you, also well done to the players for the commitment they have shown.

So if I wanted to produce a pc-game...
How would I go about that? I probably need a team because I don't have the technical know-how. Where to start though?
No, I won't be jumping into this without knowing what the hell I'm doing. In fact, I won't start anytime soon. This is just the very first reconnaissance. What kind of people do I need and how do I know they'll do the job well? What can I reasonably do myself? I decide what the game should be like for the biggest part.
