Help me buy a scientific computing desktop
Inspired by the other thread, can I ask you guys for some more advice? I'm looking to buy a desktop for $1000-2000, to use for my work in the lab. Almost every project I do has a serious numerical computation component to it, so I want to max out on computational power. I don't care about graphics though.

Idea for a Diplomacy Game
I know there is a vdip variant where you only have one SC but I think it would be interesting to get a game going on here where It has unique rules.
1. You can only move one unit per turn. And you can only move additional units for every SC you gain.
2. By Spring of the 2nd year you could be moving 2 units, and so on and so forth.
anyone ever done anything like that?

Is this the longest game ever?
This game has been going for 2 (100 in game years) years as it is the 2012 world cup. It must be the longest or most back and forth game ever. In fact Austria was down to 1 supply centres near the 1/3 mark but is still alive! Imagine the commitment. If anyone has spectated all the way through I congratulate you, also well done to the players for the commitment they have shown.

I think comments that imply any player is a nazi are low, and without any value. You obviously have no idea just how evil the nazi regime was, and how many brave persons have their lives so we could be free of that evil. Try and show some respect for their sacrifice

Ishmael is not a Jewish name, just because it's in the Bible. In fact, the Arabs recognize their descent from Ishmael. "...and by the time of Muhammad all Arabs were descendents of Ishmael according to historians Hisham Ibn Al-Kalbi and al-Sharqi who believed that all Arabs were descendents of Ishmael including the Qahtanites." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishmaelites
@Mujus

Finally, *someone* gets me.

And all descended from Abraham, I note the way you nitpick over the name, a typical exercise in semantics Mujus, but make no comment about the central point I tried to make that is, calling another member of the webdip community a nazi is offensive. You don't criticize that act so you give it de facto approval ?
MajorMitchell (1874 D)

And IshmuleG, how about withdrawing your remarks that implied another member of the webdip community is a nazi ? Even as a poor form of humour it's still offensive.

And having no minimum standards at all, no thank you.
I don't mind a robust exchange of views and even insults, but for me, the nazi stuff is unacceptable. I had an aunt, now deceased who was Jewish. 90% of her extended family in Europe were murdered by those nazi scum, her uncles, aunts, cousins.
It may be an apples and oranges comparison, but consider the example of extremely sexist and offensive insults being thrown at you Steephie, I'd regard that as being unacceptable as well.
If someone called either you or me a cork brained clown, then we cop it sweet and can respond with similar taunts / insults, but there has to be some standards that we collectively decide upon
steephie22 (182 D(S))
01 Dec 15 UTC
Fair point. Sexist insults really hurt my feelings.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
02 Dec 15 UTC
Thanks Steephie, I'm just saying there should be should be some set of "minimum standards" that we collectively decide. Now I can also see that I may be "out of step" with the collective view on the nazi insults being unacceptable or acceptable.
I suppose Mujus might have some views on where he draws the line with regard to insults targeting his religious beliefs. He's possibly able to cop being called a God botherer, but surely there's more extreme stuff that he would regard as unacceptable, and that non religious persons would also regard as unacceptable.
I was surprised he'd nitpick on the name thing but let the nazi stuff slide on by. At least one of those millions murdered by the Nazis was a prominent church leader who spoke out against the Nazis, and his moral courage deserves to be remembered
steephie22 (182 D(S))
02 Dec 15 UTC
I wasn't actually being sincere, but I'll be now.

First of all, I'm a dude. A vital piece of information to understand my sarcasm above.

Second, maybe there should be some standard, but it's also important to realize that being offended is something in your head and I'm afraid no example could make me come back on what I said about not giving a shit what other people say, because you won't be able to offend me. Trash my beliefs, my mother, my ethnicity, make up some fetish or even call me a girl, I don't care because your opinion does not matter to me.

It's a much easier fix than to try and come to some universal agreement about what's offensive and what isn't, I assure you.

You're not the problem, but that doesn't mean you can't the solution to your problem.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
02 Dec 15 UTC
Can't *be* the solution
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
02 Dec 15 UTC
Steephie, easiest choice is the best choice, I disagree
What did JFK say about sending men to the moon ?
We choose to do this, not because it's easy, but because it's difficult.
I also just don't believe you with your claim that it's impossible for you to ever be offended, what, you have no pride, no ego and there's nothing and no one you care deeply about ?
Do you think your alleged views are shared by the majority in any community ?
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
02 Dec 15 UTC
Chaqua's also got a point about this thread, regarding kestas name being used in the start of the thread
An example of a standard set by collective agreement ?

I hadn't realised that you're still in short pants Steephie, and assumed I was dealing with an adult with plenty of life experience. I suspect that like many of us, myself included, your path to enlightenment might be long and arduous. Get back to me when you've outgrown the kindergarten.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)

Why do you exclude the male sex from being the target of sexist abuse Steephie ? That's a sexist assumption on your part.

I think this is the first time I have to totally agree with Steephie. We have some standards about the forum you can read on the help page and I don´t see where this thread have broken any of this standards.
And Major we also have self moderation, where you can mute the thread, or any user you find that doesn´t meet YOUR standards.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)

I like the short pants and long walk socks with the leather sandals, King Cyrus, particularly when the MemSahib appears thus dressed
Just sayin'.....
MajorMitchell (1874 D)

Rdriveria, apparently while I was away there was something about calling out another player by name in the title box that heads the thread being naughty.interesting suggestion, I may mute you
steephie22 (182 D(S))
02 Dec 15 UTC
@MajorMitchell: In one breath you tell me I'm making the easy choice and in the next, you tell me it can't be true.
Make a choice.

There's definitely things and people I care deeply about. I couldn't care less if you tell me they should all be gassed or something, because that comment only tells me you're an ass. It doesn't really have anything to do with anyone else.

Also, ad hominem. Again.
If offending people would be against the rules, you'd probably be banned by now. Just saying.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
03 Dec 15 UTC
But not banned for a nazi insult.
I'm giving up on this, in my opinion you are a rather stupid selfish clown who won't soon change their attitude on this issue.
I don't mind abgemacht calling me an idiot, I'm quite prepared to accept his right to express that opinion, and thank him for NOT calling me a nazi idiot.

You (steephie ) have misrepresented my statements and that just demonstrates the inadequacy of your arguments and abilities, and you'll obstinately continue to choose to be bloody obtuse so I think it's best for me to regard you as a hopeless case and move on.
You just don't get it. I think we should tolerate insults, but it's not anything goes, I think there should be standards. You apparently think no standards are required although you shift your position so I cannot accurately or clearly define your views
steephie22 (182 D(S))
03 Dec 15 UTC
I don't shift positions. You shift positions but think you're standing still. From your perspective, I'm moving.

Relativity in a nutshell.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
03 Dec 15 UTC
Wrong
Again
I apologize if I have struck a sensitive spot in anyone's feelings by using the word "Heil". I didn't (and still do not) believe that should be the cause of any offense, and I'm totally in my rights to say it, but let it be known that (though it shouldn't have to be clarified) I was not implying Kestas, or anyone, was a Nazi.

This has to be the most ridiculous thread I've seen in a long time, and that's up against some pretty stiff competition.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
03 Dec 15 UTC
I apologize to IshmaelG for any offence caused by my innacurate remarks about his player name, and thank him for making the effort to reconcile an unfortunate situation.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
03 Dec 15 UTC
Sweet Octavious, I used the term "Divine Octavious" not to cause any offence to anyone's religious beliefs, but because your player name is, I think the name of the chap who became the Roman Emperor Augustus, who was posthumously voted a God by the Roman Senate. (although his name might have been Octavian ??? )
I figure you a wise enough to have picked up on that connection.

Please feel free to call me an idiot, clown, fool, dill or similar, you may say at times I am as dopey as Draugnar, whenever you like and as often as you like, but please never call me a Nazi idiot etc

MajorMitchell (1874 D)

At first I thought "classics on YouTube" , he cannot be possible, but then I spotted the sideways smile, you divine jester Octavious. The MemSahib when standing has a vertical smile to balance her gorgeous grimace, but these days it's a "take a packed lunch and loaded Purdey" type of expedition when revisiting that steamin' jungle. As Colonel Kurtz said, "the horror, the horror..."
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
04 Dec 15 UTC
Divine Octavious, the "nazi" furore continues in the Biblical thread. IshmaelG is not involved, he generously offered peace and I gratefully accepted, but Mighty Mujus continues to quibble and Crazy Anglican bought into it.
I've repeatedly offered to end it completely, or end it in that thread and bring it back here if those two clownish clerics wish to do so.
Can I get a deal on absolution if it comes back here, Divine Octavious ?
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
04 Dec 15 UTC
Yes I instantly thought of that terrible word play on hail Mary after reading that plea for absolution, and cursed myself for it.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
04 Dec 15 UTC
Damnable typo's. At first I thought classics on YouTube, he cannot be serious is what I meant to say
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
04 Dec 15 UTC
That terrible pun / wordplay is however an example of the very thing that the Christian community would regard as unacceptable.
Regret to say I've challenged the two clownish clerics to confront it here, out of deference to their spiritual beliefs I would prefer not to air it in the Biblical thread
Unfeeling heretical monster that I am
Octavious (2701 D)
04 Dec 15 UTC
For the record, my name has very little to do with Romans, be they ancient or otherwise :)
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
04 Dec 15 UTC
Thanks, I thought it was Julius Caesar's nephew Octavian not Octavious who became the Emperor Augustus and was posthumously voted a God by the Roman Senate.
You'll just have to win your laurels and triumphs either in the brave new world, or playing Webdip, or both.
We could always vote you into the status of a God and have you stand beside SplitDiplomat atop our Mt Olympus

No, I won't be jumping into this without knowing what the hell I'm doing. In fact, I won't start anytime soon. This is just the very first reconnaissance.
