Christmas Music: How Soon is too Soon?
A local station went to an all-Christmas-music format last Monday. I say that's too early. What's your personal acceptable threshold for listening to Christmas music?
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))

As soon as people start asking if its "too soon," that's just right.
krellin (80 DX)

You realize that you are not forced to listen to that station, right? My daughters have their radios tuned to the all-Christmas-music station, and last night I brought the tree up from the basement for the family room, and we'll probably hang lights this weekend. My kids want it; there's not harm in early indulgence; it's a happy, uplifting time of year...why would I want to deny my kids this simple pleasure or music and decorations?

We'll wait until after Thanksgiving to buy a real tree for the living room, though ('caus it'll be dead/needle-less by Christmas if you buy it too early anyway)

Embrace your inner-Christmas, hecks!

Anything before December is annoying. Anything before my birthday (mid November) is infuriating.

None of these Christmas crimes come close, however, to the insult to good taste and humanity in general that is Coca Cola's "holidays are coming" advert played after the Christmas has finished. The people responsible for such things should be shot on sight.

@Krellin,
My museum does a big month-long Christmas program. Starting next Friday, I am indeed forced to listen to that station. Daily. For eight hours.

You know what the problem is? Thanksgiving doesn't have enough songs of its own. Who wants to go record a Thanksgiving album with me?
krellin (80 DX)
19 Nov 13 UTC
Thanksgiving is an NFL Holiday (the Founders foresaw this..and thus created no music). The only song I associate with Thanksgiving is the Fox Sports music...used to be that Hank Williams song...now I don't know what it is called.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Nov 13 UTC
Why are you people so rigid that Holidays must be distinctly separated? Both Thanksgiving and Christmas are supposed to be happy, family-oriented celebratory times? The mood in the air, anticipation of good times, sharing, all that crap...I see no reason why a joyful people would have a problem with the overlap.

Are you all rotten curmudgeons?
krellin (80 DX)
19 Nov 13 UTC
Sports fans...when Baseball and Football overlap, are you not pleased?

Even more so, as it is this very moment, when Football, Basketball and Hockey are all crying out for you attention, do not the tears of joy leak uncontrollably from the corner of your eyes such that you must turn your gaze from your significant other, lest she think you a woos?

Ahhh...indeed...we see where the heart lies, do we not? It is not that you can not handle the overlap of celebration...it is that you do some out of want...and some out of necessity...yes?

EPL in the morning, NFL in the afternoon, NBA/NCAA in the evening. Life is good.

@Krellin,
I have no patience whatsoever for basketball. And in fact, it irks me when NHL and NFL overlap, because the NHL gets relegated to NBCSports instead of real NBC, and I, being the cheap bastard I am, don't get cable.

So it's the same with holidays. I don't begrudge Christmas its existence. In fact, I like a little bit of Christmas. But I wish it would have a little decorum and wait its turn.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Nov 13 UTC
@ hecks
I hate basketball...thug central. I quit watching when a player choked his coach during a practice and wasn't brought up on charges...that was it for me.

I hate hockey....50 million games per season and THEN we have the infinitely long playoff. Plus, it glorifies violence, and I hate it. (No, not football violence - it glories throwing off your gloves and fighting. Detroit has had some "great" "enforcers" over the years...I have no use for that)

The Lions are going to the Superbowl this year.

There should be Thanksistmas and Football all year long.
hecks (164 D)

Well, you have a good point about hockey. Hockey's a great sport, but the NHL isn't its best forum. The missus and I are going to see our respective alma maters' hockey teams play each other this Friday. A 90-year old D3 college rivalry? Now *that's* hockey!

Wow...I agree with Krellin on a few things...like basketball suck, hockey sucks and football frakking rocks!

Oh...and Krellin...the Lions in the SB??? I think I just bust my gut laughing. It will be Seahawks - Broncos...with the Hawks pulling out a gritty win. And no...I am not a Hawks fan...I just live in the Seattle. I am a Bengals fan (hence the screen name).

So you don't think KC is for real?

(For the record, neither do I, but people are really fawning all over them. Seems like everybody's picking them for the Super Bowl. Big talk from a team that's spent the season picking on the dregs of the league! Denver's the first winning team they've played!)
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

KC doesn't have the offense to stick with the Broncos or Saints or healthy Pats of the league.

With the new rules on low hits, leading with the helmet, and defenseless receivers, I think we've seen the end of the old axiom "defense wins championships." These days, I think offensive lines win championships.

Zimmerman arrested for pointing shotgun at girl friend
George Zimmerman arrested again on multiple charges for threatening his girl friend with a shotgun. If this had happened before the trial it would have established of history of solving problems with violence.

Comics!
The missus is teaching a college-level art history class, and has reached the unit on comics, both comic books and comic strips. She requests your thoughts on the following question: What single work/artist would you say has had a major impact on the development of comics as an art form?

The 2nd Amendment
Everyone has their own opinions on it, but I feel rather strongly that 2nd Amendment rights should be supported, as it is not only necessary for self-defense, but as a measure of self-expression.

This summarizes my view nicely
