Christmas Music: How Soon is too Soon?
A local station went to an all-Christmas-music format last Monday. I say that's too early. What's your personal acceptable threshold for listening to Christmas music?

Zimmerman arrested for pointing shotgun at girl friend
George Zimmerman arrested again on multiple charges for threatening his girl friend with a shotgun. If this had happened before the trial it would have established of history of solving problems with violence.

Comics!
The missus is teaching a college-level art history class, and has reached the unit on comics, both comic books and comic strips. She requests your thoughts on the following question: What single work/artist would you say has had a major impact on the development of comics as an art form?

Vigilantes oust drug cartels.
Citizens of a town in Mexico, fed up with drug cartels, mass kidnappings, murder and extortion take action against drug cartels and corrupt police. Federal government sends army http://www.newsdaily.com/world/3ca94ee88cce3438ac68ebcbe109d335/vigilantes-seize-town-in-western-mexico

Fascinating.

Sounds good, but are these folks any better than the cartels? The paramilitaries in Colombia aren't a big improvement over the FARC, after all.

The solution for Mexico is the restoration of the rule of law in the wide swaths of the country under heavy cartel influence, not violent reaction by other extra-legal groups.

If you're being persecuted and murdered and whatever else, your police are corrupt, and your government doesn't give you any help (until after you take action), peaceful redemption of the law is the last thing on your mind. While I agree in sentiment, unless the Mexican government does something about the cartels in that area and around the country, it's not going to happen.

That said let's preach patience and hope it gets sorted out before more violence occurs.
Invictus (240 D)

It's the first thing on your mind. As I've said before, one of my pledge sons was an exchange student from Monterrey. Hope for a peaceful *resumption* of the rule of law was the first thing on his and his family's mind.

More half-thought-out sophistry from bo_sox48.

Hey, what can I say, I'm not MeepMeep, I don't lead a street gang wearing leather jackets riding Harley's all day, what do I know...

Invictus, if peaceful *resumption* (sorry, my brain's dead, long day) were the first thing in these people's minds, they wouldn't be wearing masks and carrying an AK. I'm saying that it's unfortunate that the situation has escalated to the point where this is the route people go instead of a peaceful one.

The Mexican government sending in troops to reinstate corrupt police power is also quite discomforting.
Invictus (240 D)

I doubt very much "these people" who wear masks and carry an AK include little children, women, middle aged men, the elderly, etc. No, it's likely just a different set of heavies than the cartels. Probably relatively better, of course. These vigilantes aren't likely to carry out beheadings, but still nothing like what normal people would like to like under.

What would you have the Mexican government do besides send in troops ot restore order? Just let jungle law continue? And why assume they'd just reinstate corrupt police power? Mexicans are just as capable of running a decently orderly society as any other people.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
19 Nov 13 UTC
It's either reinstate the local police or engage in long-term martial law, which is one of the methods they could try to get rid of the cartels. They need to get them out of government first, which is obviously easier said than done.

I think the Mexican government is slacking big time on the cartel violence. I don't know what I would do; personally I would decide independently within each situation but that may be impossible, I don't really know. I don't have a practical solution here. All I know is that the cartels distribute their crap through Indianapolis en route to just about every other major city in the northeastern and midwestern USA and they are not the people you want to hang around.

The only way to end it is in itself a problem. The only way this drug violence will stop is for their products to become legalized in the US and Europe. If they drugs are distributed by governments then there will be no need for these cartels and gangsters. All the muderers and convicts will have to find another way to earn income. Of course this will never happen so these criminals will never go away. The law abbiding citizens in countries such as Mexico and the US will continue to suffer while criminals and corrupt officials continue to prosper.

The 2nd Amendment
Everyone has their own opinions on it, but I feel rather strongly that 2nd Amendment rights should be supported, as it is not only necessary for self-defense, but as a measure of self-expression.

This summarizes my view nicely
