A New Site Feature
I know less than nothing about how this would have to be implemented, so feel free to ignore this. Would it be possible to add a feature that allows people to "follow" games that they aren't in?

Coming out....
Of retirement. Havent played a game in about 5 months, and have been spoiled by high quality play for to long to be satisfied by a random game.

Looking for 6 other good, reliable players who send a lot of press. Who wants in!?

NFL Pick 'em: Week 6--Can the Giants Get A Win? Should the 'skins Change Their Name?
We start Week 6 with a game that looked a LOT better before the season started, the Giants and the Cowboys. The Cowboys and Redskins play on Sunday Night, an always-fun match-up (what do you think about the Redskin name, by the way, change it or no?) and there are plenty of interesting games with the Pack and Ravens going at it, the Saints and Patriots going head-to-head, and more. So, Week 6, here we go...PICK 'EM!

Are you a fuloughed US employee? Do you like free stuff?
Apparently GOG is giving away free video games to anyone who sends them an email with a picture of them, and their furlough notice. I remember some people complaining on this forum about being furloughed by don't remember who. So public notice y'all. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128554-GOG-Offers-Free-Games-to-Furloughed-U-S-Employees

Shoddy Peer Review in Open Access Journals
As reported in Science (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/342/6154/60.full):
Open Access Journals may be more likely to accept suspect papers (as they are paid by the authors) as demonstrated by Bohannon, who submitted a clearly false paper to several hundred journals, to be rejected by less than half.

Enhance the Forum, Please!
Add "follow" like mute thread function to prioritize to top, and please add a category in thread creation for "diplomacy" and "non-diplomacy" so we can filter one or the other at any time.

More seriously, if you want a feature, the best way to make it happen is to develop it yourself. The code is all open source and freely available. A lot of our new features have been contributed by members. You can also take a look at the dev forum to see what's currently on the docket: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net.

The follow is a little more challenging than mute. Mute is a simple JavaScript function that looks at a cookie sent down with the page that says what thread and what individuals to mute, them hides a div. Follow would require sorting the threads on the server side, putting more stress on the server and significantly altering the code there to add another join and sort to the SQL query.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
12 Oct 13 UTC
No draug, you could likewise sort on the client, with JS selecting from a list of threads based on what was followed and throwing them up top (though missing out on anything from the second/later pages) likewise storeable in a cookie.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Oct 13 UTC
No, ora, not if the thread being followed is no longer on the current page. The JS wouldn't know about it.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
13 Oct 13 UTC
Yeah, unless there was some sort of technology that allowed asynchronous server calls for the followed threads via JavaScript. Maybe someday… <sigh />
</sarcasm>
Speaking of enhancements to the site, though, the last time I looked, the latest version of the source code didn't seem to be where it should have been.

So you want to re-architecture the forum to be AJAX? Right now, the only thing AJAX on the forum is the +1 feature.

I was trying to say how it could be done in the *current* architecture of the forum. Burt by all means, have at it.

lol I hope you guys would be up for another fundraiser for a beefier server.

If we do that, then we could get live chat and turns going with either timed polling or pushes and not have to constantly refresh on live games. Then I might be willing to play more of them. :-)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
13 Oct 13 UTC
No, do jot use long polling for live chat, use nodeJS and websockets, it even has a nice broadcast standard so all connected sockets get the message.

But at present i think some web browsers will not support websockets (and i'm not a fan of faking it in flash as a fallback)

And yes, draug, i said one the first page, i don't care about threads on later pages.

I'd like to see a really complicated weighting system (like reddits) which takes into accout which threads you have +1'd (and works out similarity of a thread based on a transitive relationship - so if i +1 a thread and draug +1s the same thread and an-other thread, then for me the other thread gets boosted, because it assumes that i will like what draug likes...) with the +1s effectively subtracting hours from the most recently posred order (so anything with enough +1s will appear first as they 'count' as being from the future.. But the oldest +1s will still drop off the front page eventually...
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Ha, just came across a nice example of the transitive property: poorlydrawnlines.com/comic/misinterpretation/

Support holding a unit which is supporting another units move?
If a unit is supporting a move, can another unit behind it support hold it or does that not work because the unit it wants to support hold is not holding?

Say Rumania wanted to support move a unit but I wanted to support hold Rumania from Bulgaria would that protect Rumania or would it not work?

A Nobel in Two Pages
Physical Review is making available for free the papers that won the Physics Nobel Prizes this year (for the prediction of the Higgs boson). One of them is two pages, and the other is three. That's not so uncommon in physics, but it's still remarkable how tersely a great idea can be communicated. Here is the link for the interested:

Yes, we can service our debt and not default on our credit without raising the debt ceiling. Just like YOU, the individual, can prioritize your spending at home (say, cancel cable when money gets tight)...so can the Fed. QUIT LYING OBAMA AND ALL YOU LIBTARDS!

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/10/11/232090272/utah-allowed-to-re-open-national-parks-and-foot-the-bill

The REAL question is this - the Utah can pay $1.67 million to open the parks, to generate $100+ in revenue, why are YOUR tax dollars funding the park anyway? PRIVATIZE or give parks to the states, and these stupid problems go away...
