A New Site Feature

I know less than nothing about how this would have to be implemented, so feel free to ignore this. Would it be possible to add a feature that allows people to "follow" games that they aren't in?

I'm thinking particularly about the SoW game that I'm a TA for. Every time I want to open it I either have to dig through the forum or through my PM's to find a player. What if non-players were given the ability to "follow" a game, essentially giving them a tab for it (maybe even adding it to the "my games" column) but not giving them any extra access to the game. It would essentially just be a quick link.

Would that be helpful to others? Would it be a pain for the web designers?

My uneducated guess of an answer to both of your questions would be:Yes.

Here's hoping that it wouldn't be a pain to add though. More likely than not though, if they could add that feature, they would implement it on VDip first to test it out.

You can sort of do that already, can't you? If you make a note of the game ID I imagine you could just type it after http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID= and go there whenever.

Slightly awkward, perhaps, but very doable.

I think he means an actual site function that would add it to the home page. It would also be useful for TDs to know what games they have TD powers in using a similar method. Maybe break the games column into three sections: Active, Following, and TD Powers.

I think the follow would just need a follow table linking userid to gameid and a section to display them along with a simple delete for when you wish to quit following one and a text box and button to key the gameid in and follow it.

The TD powers one is even easier as the data is there and automatic.

I would like that to be added. It would be easier than bookmarking the gameID string like I was doing now.

Easier for your, not for the coders, but I suspect it wouldn't be all that difficult. I don't write PHP but it seems more robust in some ways than ASP.Net, so probably not too difficult.

This is an interesting proposal. It sounds very useful. To add another example, if you're just thinking about taking over a CD position but want to wait for whatever reason this would be useful.

I usually bookmark games that I want to follow. That way I don't even need to log on to see what's happening.

But bookmarks don't necessarily follow you from device to device. Your account does.

Any modern browser allows you to sync your bookmarks. Still, it would be nice to have as a built-in feature.

Really? IE 9 is still the corporate standard at most places of business. Please tell me how it and IE 10 can sync and share booarks.

Webdiplomacy is probably also blocked at most corporations. Overall, IE is not the industry leader anymore.

Coming out....

Of retirement. Havent played a game in about 5 months, and have been spoiled by high quality play for to long to be satisfied by a random game.

Looking for 6 other good, reliable players who send a lot of press. Who wants in!?
