NFL Pick 'em: Week 6--Can the Giants Get A Win? Should the 'skins Change Their Name?
We start Week 6 with a game that looked a LOT better before the season started, the Giants and the Cowboys. The Cowboys and Redskins play on Sunday Night, an always-fun match-up (what do you think about the Redskin name, by the way, change it or no?) and there are plenty of interesting games with the Pack and Ravens going at it, the Saints and Patriots going head-to-head, and more. So, Week 6, here we go...PICK 'EM!

Are you a fuloughed US employee? Do you like free stuff?
Apparently GOG is giving away free video games to anyone who sends them an email with a picture of them, and their furlough notice. I remember some people complaining on this forum about being furloughed by don't remember who. So public notice y'all. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128554-GOG-Offers-Free-Games-to-Furloughed-U-S-Employees

Shoddy Peer Review in Open Access Journals
As reported in Science (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/342/6154/60.full):
Open Access Journals may be more likely to accept suspect papers (as they are paid by the authors) as demonstrated by Bohannon, who submitted a clearly false paper to several hundred journals, to be rejected by less than half.

A Nobel in Two Pages
Physical Review is making available for free the papers that won the Physics Nobel Prizes this year (for the prediction of the Higgs boson). One of them is two pages, and the other is three. That's not so uncommon in physics, but it's still remarkable how tersely a great idea can be communicated. Here is the link for the interested:

I am sorry if I missed it, but I did look.

It seems you go right from, "Putin could not have overturned this bit of legislation even if he had wanted," to talking about other matters entirely. I don't see any point where you attempt to explain your own feelings on how the man's anti-gay politics influence your opinion of him, if at all.

I'm not trying to trap you here, I'm genuinely interested.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
I hail Putin because he is the only man who stands in the way of US militarism in the Middle East, not to mention NATO expansionism elsewhere. Clearly Medvedev and more liberal oriented politcians in Russia don't have the capacity to do it. Putin is the only one.

I said this at least 3 different times. Now 4.

Putin33 (111 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
Minor anti-gay legislation doesn't negate all the good Putin does for the world. Some people can't get this through their thick heads. Sadly even leftists can't comprehend this. It's all or nothing for them.

"Minor anti-gay legislation."

That's an expression I never thought I'd hear coming from you. Are you really so able to downplay something like that? I'm surprised, I guess.

None of that detracts, by the way, from your "bigger picture" claims. I'm just interested in how you think about this.
Putin33 (111 D)

It literally has to do with minors. It is not an expression.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
09 Oct 13 UTC
haha oh yes of course.

OK, that is reasonable, I think. You are correct that it's unreasonable to expect to like EVERYTHING about a political figure. This issue is pretty much a dealbreaker for me in the states, but I can accept that it might not for you regrading a foreign leader.

Why are we just trusting Putin33 on the veto issue? Where's the proof Vladimir Putin doesn't support the law?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Oct 13 UTC
Please put forward some kind of evidence that suggests Putin doesn't support said laws and condemned the terrible actions taken against the LGBT community in both Russia and Syria in the past three years or forever hold your peace...
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
I already said he supported the law. My point is simply that he couldn't have vetoed it anyway.

Why is reading comprehension in this thread so poor?
semck83 (229 D(B))
09 Oct 13 UTC
Does Russia have the thing, like the US, where if he vetoes it, they have to pass it again?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Oct 13 UTC
Okay, cool. He supported it. So why would he veto it?
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
SMH...he wouldn't veto it....but if he *did* veto it wouldn't have made a shred of difference, since it *would have been overridden* - ****SINCE THE BILL WAS PASSED UNANIMOUSLY*******

Because I'm not you and I don't just make shit up. I'm also not an opportunist who just uses the gay issue to attack Russia while consorting with the likes of Bachman, King, Santorum, and the rest.

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/06/27/russia-federation-council-passes-anti-gay-propaganda-and-adoption-bills/

Anti-propaganda bill received 137 yes votes and 1 abstention in the upper house, 436 votes and 1 abstention in the Duma.

I even provided you a hostile website, and reference to the constituion. So go to hell you lazy opportunist.

http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/russian/const/ch5.html

"If the President rejects a federal law within fourteen days since it was sent to him, the State Duma and the Federation Council shall again consider the law in accordance with the procedure established by the Constitution of the Russian Federation. If, during the second hearings, the federal law shall be approved in its earlier draft by a majority of not less than two thirds of the total number of deputies of the Federation Council and the State Duma, it shall be signed by the President of the Russian Federation within seven days and published."

Invictus (240 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
The issue was never about the number of votes, but Putin's support of the law. After all, he signed it, and in a political system like Russia's you don't get a bill unanimously pass the Duma with Putin's support.

So link to him not supporting it.
Invictus (240 D)

I SAID HE SUPPORTED IT 5 TIMES YOU ILLITERATE CLOWN.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Oct 13 UTC
So basically your argument is as follows:

Hypothetically, if Putin didn't support it, even though he did, then he would be a pillar for LGBT inclusion and social reform in Russia. However, it passed unanimously, and Putin signed it into law because he doesn't support it, but he's still all hail Putin long live Putin the most amazing leader ever.

Sound about right?
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
Putin is a conservative and very religious. I never pretended to agree with him on every or even most issues politically. He signing this into law is akin to Clinton signing DOMA into law. But the difference being that Putin is the sole leader preventing America and its henchmen from blowing it up and killing a lot of people, including gays. While America uses Saudi funded jihadists to destroy life for the very people you're crying crocodile tears over in Russia.

For people who constantly prattle on about nuance it's all or nothing with you people. I can't believe you're this obtuse. You must be play-acting to get a rise out of me. You succeeded.

I take it that you were satisfied with my answers to your two questions, Putin - since you have not commented further. If not I would actually be interested in your views.

@ Santa: Since you have not provided any evidence of me calling for the killing of arabs, can I ask you to withdraw your accusation? Thanks.
Nope. I never said you called for the killing of Arabs. I said you only seem care when a Jew is involved. You have the reading skills of krellin or draugnar.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
09 Oct 13 UTC
@ Santa: Ok let's be completely clear. You said:

"jamiet's fantasy world where slaughter of Arabs by Arabs is acceptable"

Show me where I said, or implied, that the slaughter of *anyone* was "acceptable". Go on, show me.

Also where in this thread did I say anything against Jewish people?
6000 Palestinians have died along with 1000 Israelis in the last 13 years in that conflict. You are willing to make dispensations for Palestinian (you say Hamas but you and I know such oppression isn't limited to Hamas) because of the severe oppression they face.

In the last 2 years over 100000 Syrians have died, and you support the agreement that allowed the regime to keep up their attacks on the other segment of the population and the rebels to do the same.

Why the discrepancy? Why are Israel's actions so objectable that the syrian conflict with over 1000% more casualties in nearly 1/10 the time is ok with you as long as both sides play fair?

I'm glad that my pro peace position is not nearly as hypocritical as yours. Netanyahu and the religious extremists must be defeated and the West Bank evacuated. A lasting peace is the only path to Israeli survival and prosperity and this peace should allow the Palestinian people to enjoy the same benefits.

On the other hand I bristle at people like you who claim the conflict is one sided and israelis as uniquely evil and see it for what it is, intentional or unintentional antisemitism. I'm sorry if you don't agree.
