Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

free speech attack: british regulations to shut down a free internet

new regulations will place media under extensive state control and make independent news online subject to its extensive regulations. compliance costs make it uneconomical for small independent news organizations to target a british audience.

the impossible (according to abermacht) is being proposed. isps will presumably be given a list of foreign ips (of news websites which do not comply with the new regulations) to block access to.

a bold move as a sign of things to come for the western world and the internet.

@Ulytau - you have many points that are well taken. I'm certainly not opposed to raising taxes as part of a balanced budget plan. I just think the "tax" proposed to Cyprus is a really, really bad way of generating revenue. As I said above, it undermines the very purpose of banks, and it punishes personal responsibility.

It also seems that the EU is targeting Cypriot banks because of the large number of Russians who deposit their money in Cyprus. Not, in my view, a very wise international precedent.

I have a solution to Cyrus: Reduce government spending. Nuff said.
blankflag (0 DX)
22 Mar 13 UTC
note that with these proposed regulations the regulators will have the power to decide arbitrarily what they will allow from news sources online and what constitutes a news source, so the regulators will be able to block access to foreign websites and shut down domestic websites in the united kingdom without even having to pass a law with elected representative support.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

Once again I hate whatever the government is doing, but nobody is talking about british internet, what we're talking about is Cyrus.

yes but i dont want to start a new thread everyday... but there is enough government tyranny to have new topics multiple times a day and still only cover a fraction of the extremely significant yet never covered stories.
ulytau (541 D)

"I have a solution to Cyrus: Reduce government spending. Nuff said."

Because government spending and crisis in private banking are the exact same thing. A truly one-dimensional approach.

"I just think the "tax" proposed to Cyprus is a really, really bad way of generating revenue."

I also happen to think it is excessively harsh, but to outright reject it without consideration when the other party cannot come up with a measure of their own is short-sighted. If even the prospect of a total collapse of its banking system cannot motivate the Cypriot government to come up with credible alternatives, crazy ideas start to fly around. It's also sad since in the area of closing the budget deficit, Cyprus has made some progress despite its nonexistent economic growth and this mess in its financial system. But that's how it usually turns out, the bankruptcy doesn't come in times of the highest deficits, but in the following period of remedy, when the weight of accumulated problems crushes the economy. Stock indicators are as important as the flow ones.

"It also seems that the EU is targeting Cypriot banks because of the large number of Russians who deposit their money in Cyprus."

Cyprus is a tax haven that attracts plenty of European corporations, although primarily those from the CEE with the Netherlands being the more high-end alternative. It's more of a continuation of German crusade against such destinations than an anti-Russian move, after all the relations wih Russia are rather good. Although the popularity of Cyprus among Russian mafiosi is of course a very real thing.
blankflag (0 DX)
23 Mar 13 UTC
it is an anti-russian move. and how is it short sighted to outright reject confiscation of bank funds? in fact, the eu claimed amounts under 100k euros was *insured*. so if they seize funds from those accounts then that *insurance* was just a lie.

you are all not seeing the fact that this failure of the banks was not by accident. actually in the cyprus case it wasnt even the so called mortgage crisis. it was that the european banks told the country to buy greek bonds knowing those bonds would fail, and then using it as an excuse to inflict austerity on their people. this whole crisis was thought up in a boardroom the same way all the terrorism happening in africa and the middle east was designed in order to take control of the middle east and recolonize africa.

it is so obvious what is happening that those of you who cant see it really need to take some time off of watching television.

cyprus news: the entire government of lebanon has stepped down due to not being able to make government payments due to government funds being tied up in cyprus accounts with the current account freezing. the borders with israel are already shut down. the chance of an israeli invasion to annex land is extremely high.
ulytau (541 D)
24 Mar 13 UTC
The chance of an Israeli invasion to annex land is nil. On the other hand, the chance of Syrian sectarian violence spilling over is high, considering Assad already bombed one border city and support from the political elite of Lebanon is split between the two factions.
ulytau (541 D)

And the situation on Cyprus has nothing to do with it, Mikati stepped down because of domestic issues. Just because Cyprus is just over the sea doesn't mean their interconnected, you know. Although your crazy conjectures are really imaginative.

24 Mar 13 UTC
on the idea that israel will never annex lebanon land please read the following before making a fool out of yourself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Line_(Lebanon)
and although it is not reported, their funds invested in cyprus were a major cause of the government stepping down. you will have to trust me on that i am too busy to figure out how to convince you of it.

blankflag (0 DX)
24 Mar 13 UTC
did you even read that article? israeli troops have already have gone over the border multiple times. what would you call an invasion? so... just because they didnt have the manpower to secure a sizeable area means it wasnt an invasion, maybe. but since troops have already gone over, how can you say they will never invade? and calling me an idiot adds to the discussion how? obviously i said something that was a little too close to the truth if you are resorting to name calling.
ulytau (541 D)
24 Mar 13 UTC
Do you know what annexation means?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Mar 13 UTC
And the United States landed troops in Pakistan. France landed troops in Mali. You can intervene without doing anything remotely close to an invasion.

Israel has the manpower to take over the whole Middle East. They've proven it in the past, too. You don't have to agree with what they do - I often don't - to realize that they are one of the most powerful military forces in the world.

Blankflag, I can say they will never invade because the world doesn't want them to, and in today's reality, the rest of the world dictates your foreign policy, not you as a nation.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Mar 13 UTC
And, by the way, calling you an idiot added more truth to this discussion than the things you are bringing up.
blankflag (0 DX)
24 Mar 13 UTC
the idiots are you all if you think israel will never invade lebanon. the head of the military said lebanon will not exist as a country in the future and the israeli government are now saying that the part of lebanon near israel is now a part of israel.

ok you can all criticize me as much as you want but when you are proven wrong yet again maybe think back and go... oh wait he did say that. he did say the media would convince me that we need to intervene in iran and syria, he did say global warming was junk science, etc, etc, etc. its funny how i am somehow able to predict what really happens based on common sense and yet you all still consider me an idiot.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Mar 13 UTC
Okay. Let's bet our life savings on whether or not Israel will invade Lebanon without provocation any time within the next 20 years. Make me rich; I'd love that.
ulytau (541 D)
24 Mar 13 UTC
If you don't know what annexation means, you are an idiot.
blankflag (0 DX)
24 Mar 13 UTC
they are taking that land one way or another, i will bet you that. they are invading palestinian land too. and what do you mean 'without provocation'? israel is the world leader in creating 'provocations'. by putting terrorists as leaders of places they want to attack like when they created hamas. they will get that land in one way or another. whether idiots like you think it is legit or not depends on how successful they are at creating an excuse to do it, but it will get done.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Mar 13 UTC
So you will bet your life savings? How much is that, 56 cents?
blankflag (0 DX)
24 Mar 13 UTC
i would bet considerable money that the land will be a part of israel within the next 20 years. you saying that i am an idiot or poor doesnt add anything. in fact i would even bet even money that they that land will be a part of israel within 10 years. and i will make another wager, that the african map will be further redrawn for imperial purposes within the next 10 years. and that palestine will be a small speck on the map of israel and there will never be one state or two states, it will always be the current apartheid system because that is what the people in power want.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Mar 13 UTC
Okay. I'll bet 56 cents then.

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).
