BitCoin
Is anyone around here using BitCoin? I'm listening to a podcast about it and puzzling over how this works. Has anyone tried it?

Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

MeepMeep, I love you. You're everything I aspire to. You're an inspiration to all the bank workers in America who hate Asians and really want to look into the bus driving career! I hope you realize how valuable your personality is to this site, your coding knowledge is far too invaluable for us to let you leave. And what's most impressive is that you've accomplished so much, but you're not even out of eighth grade yet!

@Fasces:

Thank you for that analysis of the game. It certainly helped me understand a bit more about gunboat play. =)

However, I do not claim to be an expert. Like I've said in this thread already, it was not my intent to sound like one, or pretend to be one. I am keenly aware that I still have a lot to learn about gunboat.
"please send me an email about this, I'd like to know what you mean. "

I am asking what more there i to discuss. Perhaps you would send me an e-mail on this if there is anything that you want from me.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

My problem was not that you considered yourself an expert, but that you presumed one solo without communication meant that gunboats don't require communication.

Lando if you're not willing to discuss why you think we're unfairly punishing members then what's the point of making the accusation in the first place?
I made no accusation, I said Split was telling the truth about his claim. I said that I do not believe this player did anything wrong. You asked me to e-mail you about this. I disagree with how you will react so I prefer to avoid this problem.

Perhaps if you had a proven record of being fair this would be a different situation.

Lando, email the other admins or Kestas about why you don't think I'm being fair.

"Classic is a very unbalanced board, but at the end of the day, any good diplomat can forge the right alliances to lessen the effects of balance."

A fair point, it isn't perfectly balanced. My aim was to respond to the point above my post about relying on yourself rather than others and 'poor strategists'. I haven't played anywhere near enough gunboat to make a more general argument.
It not personal jmo, I don't believe the moderator team is capable of handling situations like this fairly.

Damn that's a lot of posts to catch up on for one day... Can't do it just yet, but I have other thoughts on gunboat...

MM's assumed Top Five reasons people play gunboat:

1. No time for the real game.
2. No good at the real game.
3. Trying to get better at one small aspect of the real game.
4. Too self-centered and unwilling to compromise to be interested in the real game.
5. Your Username is SplitDiva.

That's all I got for tonight, I'm tired...

Five above was obviously a joke, well this entire thread is mostly a joke and in good fun, but here's a real one for the Top Five:

5. If you like to solo and don't mind giving up a solo, since it's much more difficult to coordinate a stalemate line when you can't talk in the game and people are often of varying skill (one weak like can make a stalemate line virtually impossible)...

Gunboat in a long phase online game can provide a more even playing field given that players are in different time zones and have different amounts of availability to shmooze it up during the day. That dynamic does not exist in the original when everyone is only playing dip for the entire phase length. So I am glad for the variant, within the online variant...

I think there is an extremely complex art to playing gunboat... Which is combined with quite a bit of luck... Damn, there's another argument in support of this thread, per the rule book:

"At the start of the game, the players randomly decide which Great Power each will represent. This is the only element of chance in the game."

I actually think gunboat games are very cool. Lots of people enjoy them. Gunboat has it's purpose.

Kind of like how I like lots of card games like pinochle, hearts and go fish. Different games are great in different situations.

I prefer GB's - the game in it's essence, outplay & out-guess your 6 other opponents in this 7-player tug-o-war, & the results are basically the same as press games, yet a lot less work (typing, bribing, bullshitting, ... even ENDURING ppl! lolol etc ;) ) ... That said, Public Press is a Hoot! Let's freak out and tell jokes :P
It is probable that nobody remembers me, but I decided to return from the dead to post in this thread and then disappear again for a while. I would probably say that category 1, time, applies to me, as I've only been able to play a few gunboat and live games very sparingly over the past few years.

I) Maybe gunboat cannot be properly categorized as Diplomacy, but the same thing can be said about Webdiplomacy. Who really Diplomacy plays with 72 hours turns, possibly taking 72 hours (due to either strategy or procrastination) to make an obvious disbandment. If you play it live, then there are additional elements to consider. You can see which players are talking to each other and determine which players aren't available to talk to you in the frantic time period between turns (games by mail aside). You can watch for tells that a person is lying. The best liars on this website might not be so successful in real life games. Gunboat in particular is sort of unique to online Diplomacy - it would honestly be weird to play in person. Maybe Gunboat is not real Diplomacy, but neither is WebDiplomacy. I suppose you could still make the distinction that Gunboat is still not quite Almost-Diplomacy. With all of that said, I've mostly played WebDiplomacy myself and consider that to be the real Diplomacy, however, I would opine the same about Gunboat.
II) Whether and how variants in general can be considered Diplomacy might be another area worth exploration.
III) One of the few games I've played in a long time was a gunboat game, and that game was one of the most exciting games that I've ever played. As Russia, I allied with Turkey (we shared some supports), only to be attacked by England from the outset and subsequently stabbed by Turkey and then even attacked by Germany. Italy refused numerous invitations to an alliance. Meanwhile, France took advantage of Germany and England while I managed to rekindle an alliance with Turkey after having been stabbed, acurately predicting the necessary shared supports. Just before France was about to win, Turkey, Italy, Germany, and I suddenly all at the same time put together a pretty good stalemate to stop France for a while. I went from having 2 supply centers in a gunboat game to having 9 supply centers (second place) in the eventual draw, with perhaps a long shot at a win if I had continued.

/End of monologue + back into hiding for a few months until I randomly decide to play a short game or post in a random thread.

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).
