Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

MeepMeep, I love you. You're everything I aspire to. You're an inspiration to all the bank workers in America who hate Asians and really want to look into the bus driving career! I hope you realize how valuable your personality is to this site, your coding knowledge is far too invaluable for us to let you leave. And what's most impressive is that you've accomplished so much, but you're not even out of eighth grade yet!

Good shooter games
These days, Call of Duty kinda sucks to me... So what now? Any idea's? I'm looking for a good shooter other than Call of Duty.

Keep the politics in your pants, murray.

I'm buying the new Defiance game. It's supposed to be more or less an MMO shooter (less RPG and more combat focused) and I want to give it a try. $50 at Amazon ($10 off).

Sorry, Draug. Please change, "Get a dose of Objectivism and the White Man's Burden as you play..." to "You get to shoot people with lightening with one hand and a shotgun with the other."

To be fair, it's more philosophy than politics (and Rand was born in St. Petersburg), but I take your point...they're fun games regardless of the message. I just really like things that work on more than one level, like Descartes+action movie with excellent effects=The Matrix.

The mechanics in Bioshock (also Bioshock II and Bioshock Infinite) aren't as solid as those in Call of Duty or Battlefield, but it more than makes up for it with a really engaging story (I won't go too deep into the underlying philosophies that make up the baseline for the stories so as to not offend any sensibilities) and a really unique setting/atmosphere. They are some of the few shooters that can really convey a sense of claustrophobia and fear. There's a cursory leveling element and some inventory management, but nothing too deep. If you're looking for multiplayer, though, you should look elsewhere. Only Bioshock II had it, and it sucked. If you're looking for a good single-player experience, though, it's a solid choice.

As a side-note, you can get the first two pretty cheap now.

In my defense, I think of Holland amd Belgium as European where as Sweden and Norway are Scandanavian.

And Murray, "White Man's Burden" did not originate with Rand. That was Kipling.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))

@ Draug-I'm aware. Bioshock and Bioshock II dealt with Rand's Objectivism. The White Man's Burden is Bioshock Infinite.

Fair enough. I'm a game nut (all kinds, not just video games), and as I mentioned earlier I really like it when they can work on a few different levels rather than just "go here, kill this." I guess that's part of the draw of Diplomacy for me. I may start my own thread on that at some point...see what kind of games are out there with a few different layers that I haven't heard of yet.

I'm with Yebellz here. Team Fortress 2. Each character plays very differently and at different skill levels. I personally love playing a medic.

I actually think I like that kind of game too murraysheroes...
For example, I loved CoD's single player thanks to the story...

So I don't mind you talking about that, but do try to keep politics out please!

Draugnar, how does the fact that you consider a part of Europe no part of Europe defend you? :P

While I'm at it, Holland is technically just 2 of 12 provinces in the Netherlands (North and South Holland), not like I care, just like to be a smart-ass every now and then :) So if you want to do it right, it's the Netherlands, or maybe even The Netherlands, not sure about that :P
Recommending old-school Ace of Spades, because no one else is. D:<

Advantages:

*Tiny hardware requirements. You could run this thing on a pocket calculator.
*Grenades actually deal appreciable damage.
*Minecraft-like level destruction and construction.
*Free, free, free.

Actually, I was defending myself from Fairfax who said "In other news, Netherlands are now in northern Europe. " as if it wasn't part of Europe, or at least part of Northern Europe.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Apr 13 UTC
OK, so I looked at a stupid "map of Europe" that laid it out and they can Hol and Den "Western Europe". What the fuck? It is as far north as London. They just decide to divide it based on an artbitrary line that has nothing to do with latitude? Then again. West Germany and East Germany... Europeans don't know how to fucking name anything. Scandanavia borders the East Block via what we Diplomacy players call StP and yet it's actually Europe despite having no border with mainland Europe at all. All of Great Britain is Northern Europe despite London being further south than many parts of Germany and virtually all of the Netherlands. Morons. :-)

One other shooter I forgot to mention that has a great (albeit slightly buggy) single player experience is Metro 2033. It's got a good atmosphere and a nice story behind it as well (you are surviving in the Russian subways after a global nuclear war). One of the things I really appreciated is that ammo is the primary form of currency (you can buy guns and other survival materials), so you become very conscientious of every round you fire. Again, though, no single player.
Fairfax (1915 D)

There are plenty more divisions of Europe than one Draugnar, but I don't think any of them include Netherlands as part of Northern Europe. The UN division of Europe is one I especially dislike, as it completely fails to acknowledge existence of Central Europe.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Apr 13 UTC
But they all call London "Northern Europe" yet much of Germany (Berlin - lat 52.5 N) and all of the Netherlands (lat 52.2 N) are farther north than London (lat 51.5 N).
Fairfax (1915 D)
18 Apr 13 UTC
There are plenty of maps that call London Western Europe instead of Northern, but anyway, you are missing the fact that they are geopolitical divisons, not geographical. They follow cultural and political influence borders rather than latitude. Making a divison by geography alone would serve no actual purpose.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Apr 13 UTC
I know, but not being European, I didn't know there was a "Northern Europe" politically speaking.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
18 Apr 13 UTC
Hmm...something about hijacking a "teen-in-northern-Europe-looking-for-a-good-shooter-game-to-play's thread" for political arguments... :)

It's geopolitical, not political murray :P

I was just pointing out that I'd been chastised for (unintentionally) doing the same thing. If anyone wants to discuss the various divisions of Europe in another forum, please let me know...I actually though the discussion was quite interesting. Let me know if someone opens a thread up for it...I'd be particularly interested in the fuzzy line(s) between Europe and Asia.

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).
