Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

MeepMeep, I love you. You're everything I aspire to. You're an inspiration to all the bank workers in America who hate Asians and really want to look into the bus driving career! I hope you realize how valuable your personality is to this site, your coding knowledge is far too invaluable for us to let you leave. And what's most impressive is that you've accomplished so much, but you're not even out of eighth grade yet!

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).

Feature demand - weekday games
This is probably the 10th game I've lost due to missing moves at the weekend.
SYnapse (0 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
This time, we had Google Chrome at the other house, and it didn't load any orders for me apparently webdip only works with IE (or firefox)

Mon-Friday games with a weekend phase of 48 hours are essential. I almost feel like stopping playing webdip because I know I'll probably never be able to commit to a full game.

I will donate if you implement this.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
A demand? You got some nerve. And then you'll only donate if Kestas implements it like he is some dancing organ-grinders monkey? Please do leave. We don't need entitlement attitudes like that around here.
SYnapse (0 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
Forgive the language, Draug, but I can't be the only person who plays webdip and isn't available at weekends. For me, this makes a lot of sense, and I'd be willing to donate towards the game if it was implemented (allowing me to play properly). Otherwise, I don't see much point.

I do think I would have given you a good run for your money as Turkey, had this not completely screwed up my game.

Don't discuss ongoing games on the forum.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

@SYnapse, webdip works perfectly fine on Google Chrome (I haven't had an issue in 2+ years). If you are having problems you need to clear your cookies and cache and try again. You should also make sure you have javascript installed on that other computer. You are also welcome to play games with 48 hour phases if shorter games put too much of a strain on your schedule.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
But demands aren't the way to go about it. Male the donation and Kestas will send you an email asking what you would lile bumped to the top of his priority list. I told him a TD role. You can tell him weekend autopause.
Sleepcap (100 D)

I'm currently developing such a system vor vDip.
Once it's live maybe kestas can integrate this here too...

One potential difficulty with a weekend pause is the question of whose weekend? West coast U.S. (UTC -8), east coast Australia (UTC +10), or somewhere in-between? Or pause for all three days? Or have users register their time zones and pause based off of those?
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

@Alderian - when you gonna spill the beans on these changes you've made??
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
16 Apr 13 UTC
@Nigee, so far the ones I have noticed are the Refresh button, and when you join a live game you are informed that the game will start at the scheduled time, not immediately after 7 players joined.

I think eventually we're going to have page navigation buttons on forum threads with more then one page too, but those aren't added in yet. I know there's another change that's been added that I haven't found yet too.

Just don't run a turn between Friday 6pm GMT and Monday 6am GMT.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
16 Apr 13 UTC
@jmo, if you are on a multi-page forum thread and are not on the last page, then you will see the pager at the bottom rather than the Refresh button. This is a nice visible indication that you are not on the last page and you might want to go to the next page before responding (something I've goofed on myself a time or two.)

Also, the pager is in a more horizontal format using less screen space.

On the live games, not only does the confirmation box indicate that live games don't start until the scheduled time even if all players join, it also lets you leave a live game that all players have joined if there is at least 30 minutes before it is scheduled to start.

@Draugnar, so in Eastern Australia (UTC +10), that would be from Saturday 4am to Monday 4pm.

And in western U.S. (UTC -8), that would be from Friday 10am to Sunday 10pm.

And I suppose that the game page could indicate it is paused for the "weekend" and specify the time period with the javascript doing its usual adjustments so that each player knows the time frame for their time zone.

Seems viable.

And I retract the idea of using the player's time zones, to determine the best range, as in an anon game that information would not be safe to use without potentially indicating who might be in the game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
Yeah, I think that is a pretty good spread.

If there's two things that Draugnar can't stand, it's attitudes and exaggerated language. You would do well to learn from his example of measured words and pleasant disposition.

Also, another solution is to play with 7 or 10 day phases. When advertising the game you can specify whether this is to accomodate for weekday OR weekend play. As some prefer weekends free from diplomacy, others have weekday obligations where weekends are best for play. You'd be forced to accept a gentlemens agreement to ready up during the desired time, but it's a minor provision compared to the benefit of not NMRing.

I'd be happy to join such a game to start things off for you. Weekend or weekday is fine.
VirtualBob (209 D)

A "weekend" definition is tough. Spent the last two weekends in southeast Asia and often spend them in Europe. I would need about a four day halt to cover the possibilities.

Alternative approach ... there was an explicit threat in the original posting. Maybe just call his bluff?
Andraste (178 D)
17 Apr 13 UTC
On the issue of "What is a weekend", it could just have the game creator input the time to be paused themself. That would also allow it to be used for other situations, such as people who can'tplay on other certain days.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Apr 13 UTC
Yeah, a DOW and Time to stop and start as an option might be good to. Then those who were playing a private game and just wanted to stop at 9PM ET Friday and resume Monday at 10AM ET could set that up.
I demand a feature that automatically pauses games during daylight hours. I can't be the only person who plays webdip and isn't available when the sun is up. I almost feel like stopping playing webdip because I know I'll probably never be able to commit to a full game that occurs solely in the dark. Eclipses are okay, no pause necessary.
