Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

MeepMeep, I love you. You're everything I aspire to. You're an inspiration to all the bank workers in America who hate Asians and really want to look into the bus driving career! I hope you realize how valuable your personality is to this site, your coding knowledge is far too invaluable for us to let you leave. And what's most impressive is that you've accomplished so much, but you're not even out of eighth grade yet!

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).
Draugnar (0 DX)

Really? No one interested in it?
ghug (5068 D(B))

I haven't watched it yet, but you've piqued my interest and I have nothing better to do today. I'll just point out that pretty much everything is derivative in some way.

I was thinking about trying out the MMO now that I've gotten a taste for the show.

Also, how big is your neighborhood? Mine's small enough that I know almost everybody's name, even people I've never met. And even people whose names I don't know, I usually know their dog's name and some embarrassing bit of gossip about them that one of the neighbors told me.
I've played the game and watched the pilot.

The game has, so far, started out promising with a few bugs, but Trion has been updating regularly and has already fixed some of the more noticeable problems. The game is a third person shooter and a MMO for PS3, PC, and X-Box. You can find better info on the game so I'll talk about how it affects the show. In the game Nolan is perceived as a a normal protagonist. But throughout the first few episode missions, you begin to notice he will fight for what is right, but he keeps his best interest in the front of his mind at all times. The TV series showed him as more of a good guy and less of caring for himself, but the show is very very young, and so this is likely to change slightly. I felt as though the story is good for both and has a feeling of District 9, except the aliens are far from as helpless.

I'm excited to see how they both develop. Until next weeks episode I will continue to play the game with high hopes.

If you caught the making of program Sunday night, the game takes place *beofre* the show. So presumably, Molan will get less and less self centered and more and more the good guy.

^^ Wrong thread above. My bad.
Octavious (2701 D)

I have lost all faith in modern television's ability to make a decent science fiction series. The trend now seems to always favour a long, slow build-up in the first series (or first two if you're really lucky) followed by it being cancelled and the whole remaining story fudged into one far-fetched hash, or the budget being slashed and a final series produced with only 3 charaters and sets that would make the original Star Trek blush.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Apr 13 UTC
I have high hopes for this one. IT seems SyFy is finally getting back on track. But it alos seems a great number of the actors and actresses are non-Americans so I'm hoping it is something that, even if it gets cancelled, gets picked up by BBC America or something. Also, check out Orphan Black on BBC America. It would never float as a mainstream show in the US (too sexy to the point of side boob and lead actress walking away from camera butt naked for all to see and too cereberal as the typical American is too stupid to follow the plot) but it is probably one of the best science fiction shows aired in the US (Doctor Who being probably *the* best of course).
Octavious (2701 D)
17 Apr 13 UTC
Dr Who has some kind of inner dynamo akin to the Duracell Bunny, but mostly I have little trust in the BBC either. What they did with Outcasts was awful!

I'm almost tempted to stick my head in the sand and watch Buck Rogers repeats until Blake's Seven comes out :p
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Apr 13 UTC
Buck Rogers? With Ziggy and Theopolis? At least it had Erin Grey, but still... Wtach Babylon 5 over and over until something good comes along. Yeesh!
Octavious (2701 D)
17 Apr 13 UTC
Mock ye not Ziggy. He was at the pinnicle of American acting in his generation. Only Mork and Mindy could compare.

Babylon 5 was pretty good, I admit, but I'm worried it'll look dated if I see it again. Buck Rogers looked dated when I first saw it so it avoids that problem.

If I'm going to be watching any Sci-Fi show over and over again it's going to be Firefly or Star Trek TNG. Come on now guys.

I watched the pilot, and it was pretty good. I'm excited for more.

Then watch classic Battlestar Galactica back when Face was Starbuck.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Apr 13 UTC
@ghug - I agree on Firefly except it had too few episodes. That's why Babylon 5. Many seasons there and they got better and better and better. Plus some pretty damn good made for TV movies.
Octavious (2701 D)
18 Apr 13 UTC
Well... I watched most of the first episode and got ever so slightly bored. The backstory lacks plausibility, the characters look like they've been plucked from a strange combination of Game of Thrones, Planet of the Apes, and a few cheap westerns, and at the end of it all I really couldn't have cared less if someone nuked the lot of them.

I'll put it on hold for a while and come back if I hear good things in the future.

@ Draug... going back to Buck Rogers... I was thinking of Twiki, not Ziggy. In fact I can't actually remember anyone called Ziggy aside from the computer in Quantum Leap.

@Draug - Here's the question. I am very interested in this show. But I don't know if I want to put my heart and soul into it. Give me a thumbs up or down. Do you recommend it or not? No in-between. Just a simple yes or no.
ghug (5068 D(B))
18 Apr 13 UTC
I'd suggest watching the pilot yourself. It's only an hour and a half long and it won't be a waste of your time.

jimgov (219 D(B))

If it is on Hulu, then I will give it a shot. But I got burned by that freaking Alcatraz and am still haunted by the time and energy I spent caring. CARING! And they had a freaking bat-cave on Alcatraz! And that was supposed to make sense!
