NFL Pick 'em: Week 6--Can the Giants Get A Win? Should the 'skins Change Their Name?
We start Week 6 with a game that looked a LOT better before the season started, the Giants and the Cowboys. The Cowboys and Redskins play on Sunday Night, an always-fun match-up (what do you think about the Redskin name, by the way, change it or no?) and there are plenty of interesting games with the Pack and Ravens going at it, the Saints and Patriots going head-to-head, and more. So, Week 6, here we go...PICK 'EM!

Are you a fuloughed US employee? Do you like free stuff?
Apparently GOG is giving away free video games to anyone who sends them an email with a picture of them, and their furlough notice. I remember some people complaining on this forum about being furloughed by don't remember who. Shoddy Peer Review in Open Access Journals
As reported in Science (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/342/6154/60.full):
Open Access Journals may be more likely to accept suspect papers (as they are paid by the authors) as demonstrated by Bohannon, who submitted a clearly false paper to several hundred journals, to be rejected by less than half.

Physical Review is making available for free the papers that won the Physics Nobel Prizes this year (for the prediction of the Higgs boson). One of them is two pages, and the other is three. That's not so uncommon in physics, but it's still remarkable how tersely a great idea can be communicated. Here is the link for the interested:

@ Putin33:

I said I would answer your question but I needed some time to think on it. I've been thinking and I'm in a position to answer you.

To recap, you asked:

"I'm sure you withdraw any solidarity with the Arab resistance [to Israel] because they don't hold British views on gay rights, right?"

Having thought about this I can give you the following answer:

I support the Palestinian people in their struggle against the oppression of the Israeli state, whilst opposing the anti-gay stance of the Hamas administration.

Even people who discriminate themselves can be victims of oppression from others.

Is that a reasonable answer to your Palestinian question? I hope it is, but if not I'm happy to discuss further.

Moving on, you then asked me a second question, which was:

"Jamie, who stands in the way of US militarism in the Middle East. Vladimir Putin or liberal gay activist groups? ...Who is too busy demonizing Russia to care about people's lives?"

That is easier to answer. In general I respect and support the stance that President Putin has taken over the very difficult issue of Syria. He showed great skill as a diplomat and did well to expose the weakness of the US/UK position, which I have never agreed with.

When it comes to "caring about people's lives" I would say however that I care about *both* the lives of people in Syria *and* the lives of LGBT people in Russia and other places where they face persecution.

On the Syria issue, therefore, I commend President Putin. On the issue of LGBT rights, I condem him.

Does that answer your second question?

@ Jamie

Whilst I have a healthy respect for the way Putin handled Syria from the point of view of benefiting himself and Russia (which is superior to the UK/US/France position if only because that didn't seem to benefit anybody), I can't honestly see how it made life better for the people of Syria.
Yeah, but you are not in jamiet's fantasy world where slaughter of Arabs by Arabs is acceptable but anything Israel does is beyond the pale.

@ SantaClausowitz: "jamiet's fantasy world where slaughter of Arabs by Arabs is acceptable"

I'm sorry, but please can you indicate where I have argued that I am in favour of *anyone* being killed by anyone else? I do not recall advocating the killing of any arabs by anyone.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

@ Octavious:

The US/UK/France policy before Russia stepped in appeared to be based on dropping bombs on government-held territory in Syria. This would have simply increased the death toll still further while not being enough of a blow to defeat Assad, therefore simply increasing the instability and bloodshed without actually stopping the civil war. Russia's intervention at least prevented US/Nato bombing.
Invictus (240 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC

I was against intervention, but what the Russian intervention really did was cement Assad in power. How can the West even try to get rid of him now when he's allegedly in the process of dismantling his weapons? How can the West even openly support the tattered remnants of the secular rebels or the "moderate" Islamists when Assad is cooperating? Even talking with Assad legitimizes his continued rule, since it reverses the steady trend of isolation his government was enduring. Remember, it's been suspended from the Arab LEague and many governments recognize some silly exile council as the true government of Syria. Now Assad's wheeling and dealing with the major world powers again.

We traded a dog shit scenario in intervention with a horseshit one that de facto backs up Assad. If you're just happy America isn't bombing someplace then go ahead and be happy. It meets your criteria. But it is not anything like a solution to the crisis and doesn't even get things on the right kind of track to a solution that is amenable to anyone who isn't a swivel-eyed, blanket anti-American like Putin33.

Speaking of him, maybe he could justify the oppression of homosexuals in Russia?
Invictus (240 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
That should be more like "...what the Russian PROPOSAL did..." or something.
Octavious (2701 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
@ Jamie

In relation to the current death toll in Syria the prevention of a few dozen people being bombed isn't a victory to crow about. In the grand scheme of things the sum of Russia's actions may well have been to prolong the war that may otherwise have been over by now (Assad has looked extremely vulnerable at various points and the lack of Russian support could easily have pushed him over the edge).

Putin has had a political victory and come out of the Syrian mess smelling of roses. In the reality on the ground he has done no better than Obama. It is an impressive feat of spin and presentation, nothing more.

Anyone that makes Assad win and Invictus lose his shit is a good person. Putin is a great man. Assad has a great record on gay rights. I'm sure none of the critics here care, though. Gays only matter when it's convenient for US imperialism.

Long live Bashar al Assad! Long live Syria!
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
The prolonging of the civil war wasn't done by Russia, but by those arming the rebels and puling them out of the fire ever time they were on the brink of being routed. Don't confuse the issue.
Putin33 (111 D)

Anybody who thinks Syria was on the brink of defeat from this disorganized rabble of jihadists is deluding themselves. Syria is not Libya.

Ha.

1.) In 2010 the Syrian police arrested 25 men suspected of having a homosexual affair.
2.) The UN says that Syrian officers have gang raped a number of boys 11 years old or younger since the uprising began and that 250 children have been killed by these officers, some as young as 2 years old.
3.) Syrian law prohibits "carnal relations against the order of nature" - in not-so-lawyerlike terms, homosexual relationships.

Hey Putin33, remember when people tried to ask you how you could both support gay rights and a guy like Putin, and you kept changing the subject and talking about other stuff?

Are you actually trying to maintain the position that Putin has not supported anti-gay legislation, or are you just ducking the question?
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Really, then why did thousands of gay Iraqis flee to Syria for refuge?
Putin33 (111 D)

I never ducked the question YJ. I answered it multiple times. That people never were interested in the answer is not my affair.

It's true, YJ, he did answer it multiple times. His answer was always, "I already answered that."
semck83 (229 D(B))
08 Oct 13 UTC
(Note: the above was just intended as a joke, and not intended to obscure that Putin33 did give an actual answer, to wit that Putin's tenuous grasp on the Russian legislature is insufficient to really get anything done).
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
I also said that the minor propaganda legislation pales in comparison to Putin's heroic defense of people in the crosshairs of the US, UK and their minions.

So you are maintaining that Putin has not supported anti-gay legislation. Is that what you are saying?
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
No, he expressed support for it. But he did not initiate it, nor could he have vetoed it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Why? Why couldn't he have vetoed it?
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Because it was passed unanimously. A veto would have been overridden. This law has overwhelming public approval.
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
It is ironic that those who criticize Putin for being "autocratic" wish he acted autocratically here and disregarded the opinion of the elected legislature and the public.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
08 Oct 13 UTC
He could have, Draug, but it would have been overruled. (putin33 DID answer that already, actually :)

Putin, agreed. Since you acknowledge he supports the law, is it not fair to say that were there potential for an effective veto, he would not have done so anyways? So again, I ask you then, how can you believe a man who supports anti-gay legislation is so great? It just doesn't seem in keeping with your character.
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Oct 13 UTC
I already answered this multiple times. Either you don't want to read or don't care. I'm not spelling it out for you again.
