Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

MeepMeep, I love you. You're everything I aspire to. You're an inspiration to all the bank workers in America who hate Asians and really want to look into the bus driving career! I hope you realize how valuable your personality is to this site, your coding knowledge is far too invaluable for us to let you leave. And what's most impressive is that you've accomplished so much, but you're not even out of eighth grade yet!

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).

I'd certainly be no more worried now than yesterday, and you remain far more likely to be killed by a vehicle or even a murderous Londoner than a terrorist. Doesn't stop it being a damned nasty business when it happens, and my heart goes out to those caught up in it, but future events aren't something worth worrying about.
krellin (80 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
I agree with the sentiment, Octo - living in fear is rather ridiculous.

So...do you believe we should take away everyone's guns because of the rare murder by gun which makes the news because it is rare -- it's a pretty low percentage risk of dying by gun versus, say, car - so....?

So glad to see out Muslim brothers around the world send their sympathies...
http://bigstory.ap.org/article/jordan-extremist-praises-boston-bombing

Latest is this was a Saudia national - i.e. read "Muslim" - in custody.
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/authorities_under_suspect_guard_y2m8cJO29uC2PDGIjYBalO

So....if a Saudi is responsible, what should be our response to Suadi Arabia? Should we start sending drone into Saudi Arabia, who is apparently a global sponsor a terror....and send a few to Jordan as well?

I mean....why not...we love to blow random villages up in Pakistan with our remote controlled airplanes...
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Apr 13 UTC
If a nation is responsible, that nation just invaded our nation, and our nation ought to have every right to use every bit of manpower and - ironically - explosive technology to take them out of our future worries.

If a person is involved, I hope the families of those killed will be able to stone them to death with all the racers looking on. Unfortunately, we're nicer than that, and I'm sure we'll have people hitting a button instead, or, if Massachusetts takes it upon themselves, life without parole since there is no death penalty.

Good to see bo_sox and abgemacht are alright...

I didn't even know this happened until an hour or so ago, no one in the English Dept. did, I think...wow.

CNN reports 2 dead, 141 injured and counting at this point...

I'm not in Boston. All my connections there - family and friends - are all fine. I don't think any of them were in the area; many people leave minutes after the men's and women's winners cross, which was hours earlier.
butterhead (90 D)
16 Apr 13 UTC
"if Massachusetts takes it upon themselves, life without parole since there is no death penalty." Won't matter. If the person survives long enough to get arrested(if they don't get killed by angry people on their way to prison), They won't last long in prison. Even most criminals don't tolerate child-killers..
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Hell, I hope he does. If I had a chance, I'd stab him in the eyes and carve out a nice tattoo on his chest for him.
krellin (80 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
bo_sox - I understand you 8attempt* to make a distinction between indivual and state-sponsored terror...but our current Administration has a nasty tendency to target villages and convoys with Hellfire missiles hanging under the wings of drone to take out 1 target...and, you know...those explosion have a nasty tendency to kill everyone and destroy everything around the lone target. So...you know...let's be consistent and go fuck up Saudi Arabia.

I'm surprised all the Obama lovers aren't cheering this idea on so as to make their President appear consistent in his use of force.

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Apr 13 UTC
Yes, I agree in a way, krellin, but this isn't Obama's issue until a foreign entity is to make it one. It's great that he made a statement - he should - but it's the job of the Boston Police until any greater power would hypothetically admit involvement. That's why I said what I did about the death penalty.

@Krellin- 100+ injured, at least 2 dead, and you're going to make this a political issue NOW? Can't this wait? We don't even know for sure if this was a foreign or domestic attack yet... So please... let the "Obama lovers" and political chit-chat go for a little bit and instead focus on doing our best to support the victims, their friends/families, and the law enforcement sent in to investigate this tragedy?

Oh butterhead....puh-lease. Yes...I'll make it a political issue NOW. I've never seen a good liberal not jump on an act of gun violence and make it a political issue before the barrel stops smoking.

Let's not be a hypocrite...but...I know...that's an absurd request...hypocrisy is the way of life for good libs.

Besides...i'm just stirring the pot. All this feigned sorrow is making me want to PUKE.

In a couple days, when this has fallen off the headlines, none of you will care, just like you've all stopped caring about all the other human tragedies in your lifetime.

Let me ask you, butterhead...have yo *ACTUALLY* shed a tear over this? Are you *REALLY* feeling bad, etc? Or just, you know, looking on because everyone loves a story with blood and guts and you are feigning sorrow so that you don't feel guilty about indulging your morbid curiosity?

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Someone just asked if this was a "falsified attack" in order to dupe us into thinking that we need to "increase homeland security." Forget the terrorist, that's the guy that I want to stab in the eyes.
krellin (80 DX)
16 Apr 13 UTC
It's not dumb, bo_sox...it's keen observation of humanity, from which, despite evidence to the contrary, includes this forum.

I'm keeping abreast of the news because I'm morbidly curious, not only to see the harm that was done, but also to watch the national response.

Unless you have someone that was injured in this event, or are emotionally unstable, or are living in Boston, then you really have *NO* reason to be worked up about this. But...lot's of people are pretending otherwise, becuase they feel it is the socially correct thing to do. I'm just callin' y'all out on it.

You want to feel bad about something? How about all those troops still giving their lives in Afghanistan? I don't see any of you shedding a tear or expressing concern for them.
jimgov (219 D(B))

@Jimgov You're actually surprised by that? I don't think they even have a suspect do they yet?
butterhead (90 D)

Yes, actually, I am feeling bad about this. I, unlike some people, give a damn about others. The fact that someone, or a group of people, would do this, is deeply saddening for me. But I am NOT going to make a political issue of this, and I am NOT going to indulge your stupidity. This is not a time for arguing and personal attacks, or political attacks. This is a time for mourning and supporting those who need support.

jimgov (219 D(B))
16 Apr 13 UTC
@Celticfox - You know, you are right. I would like to think that the vast majority of people out there would not see a conspiracy behind every tree. Call me crazy. One day I will learn my lesson. One day.

@Jim .. yes, that's exactly what I mean. The spokesperson, as he should, said perfectly: "No. Next question."

@Krellin .. it's dumb. Get over that. There's bigger issues at hand. Considering one of my teachers and my cousin as well are both serving bravely and willingly in Afghanistan. A family friend of mine's husband is in Afghanistan and she is giving birth by live feed because he can't return home to see his first daughter born. I shed a tear for them all the time. Now, you, krellin, shed a tear for THE PEOPLE IN BOSTON WHOSE LIVES HAVE JUST BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN.

Lol. So Krellin is enough of a Philistine to not understood the concept of empathy, but he's brilliant enough to make such ground-shaking social observations about our collective conscience? How magnanimous of you to deign to instruct us peons with such Nobel-worthy psychological insight.

Security's going to be so incredibly tight at Dodger Stadium tonight...

Can you imagine if those bombs had been detonated at Fenway Park, or some other sporting venue?

Even more people, close quarters, and nowhere to run...it's very disconcerting...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
