Christmas Music: How Soon is too Soon?
A local station went to an all-Christmas-music format last Monday. I say that's too early. What's your personal acceptable threshold for listening to Christmas music?

Zimmerman arrested for pointing shotgun at girl friend
George Zimmerman arrested again on multiple charges for threatening his girl friend with a shotgun. If this had happened before the trial it would have established of history of solving problems with violence.

Comics!
The missus is teaching a college-level art history class, and has reached the unit on comics, both comic books and comic strips. She requests your thoughts on the following question: What single work/artist would you say has had a major impact on the development of comics as an art form?

Mold on a HotDog...
We just found mold on a hot dog in our fridge...which I must say i was quite surprised to find. I truly thought the hot dog was invincible...

My faith in modern food science is slightly diminished. If anyone has encouraging words for me, I'd appreciate it.

Ever can, Bo? I do a lot of canning....preservatives = salt.

Yeah, i know, other chemicals get used in industrial food processing, but really, people way too uptight about "preservatives and chemicals". you realize that "organic food" is a bunch of chemicals that have, for example, magically sprouted out of the ground in the form of <insert vegetable name here>, or perhaps were birthed from <insert animal name here> and over the course of time a skin bag full of chemicals creatively formed in to "muscles" developed.

I do not understand why "chemicals" are such a terrible thing...
Invictus (240 D)
16 Nov 13 UTC
How long has it been since you've cleaned the fridge? Spores from that bunch of blueberries that went bad stick around after all, and so do a lot of the gases foods release as they spoil. That all builds up the the point where food will go bad much more quickly than one would expect. I suppose it could even get to the point where a hot dog could get a little moldy.

@ Bo_Sox: "Why would you want to eat preservatives and chemicals?"

Krellin is right in terms of the use of the word "chemicals". I challenge you, Bo_Sox, to provide examples of foods which are not made of chemicals.

Putin33 (111 D)

You're just being pedantic Jamie. Chemical is common parlance means substance that has been prepared artificially.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
17 Nov 13 UTC
Lazy, ignorant parlance to which I object.
tendmote (100 D(B))
17 Nov 13 UTC
Holy shit I agree with Putin33. There are chemicals that millions of years of evolution have prepared humans (and other life) to accommodate. There are also chemicals that have been developed over the last 1000, 100, 10, and 1 years. The more recently developed the chemical, the greater the concern for it's long-term effects.
krellin (80 DX)
17 Nov 13 UTC
The uneducated have this tendency to say, "Oh...chemicals....they have to be bad for you!!!" because they are victims of a movement.

and then they drink their Coca-Cola and pop an aspirin when they get a headache, take the chemo-therapy when they are dying of cancer, their statins when their cholesterol creeps a little too high...

but those terrible chemicals that preserve our food...boy oh boy...

ILN (100 D)
17 Nov 13 UTC
Krellin, I see where you're getting at(pretty retarded argument nevertheless) but there are chemicals put into foods that SHOULD not be in foods.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
17 Nov 13 UTC
Maybe that's true ILN but use of the blanket term "chemicals" is unhelpful. Water is a chemical.
ILN (100 D)
17 Nov 13 UTC
also, aspirin last time I checks was made from a tree or something, just saying
tendmote (100 D(B))
17 Nov 13 UTC
Well, coca-cola and aspirin have been around for more than a lifetime and have ingredients that readily break down according to known processes (as far as I know, let me know if I'm wrong), so it's reasonable to feel safe about those. (I don't ingest either of them).

The statins, you take because you're facing a known and worse problem if you don't take them.

In the abstract, what is the lifetime effect of ingesting a chemical that was developed last year? That's difficult to say. I'm not being an absolutist and you do have to make a decision about what threshold of knowledge satisfies "safe enough". (And I would eat the hot dog if not for the mold.) But concern about chemicals with unknown long-term effects is reasonable.
ILN (100 D)

Jamie, you know people don't refer to water when they say chemicals, stop acting like a fool.

For example, does krelly enjoy giving his children legumes or fruits sprayed with pesticides? I mean, surely those pesticides which are meant to KILL and be DEADLY to insects have 0 effect on us.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
17 Nov 13 UTC
@ ILN - Asprin is a brand name, owned by the Bayer company, for a chemical called acetylsalicylic acid. You are correct that it can be made using the bark of the willow tree, and from certain other plants. It is definitely a chemical.

"You know people don't refer to water when they say chemicalsm stop acting like a fool"

I am agreeing with Krellin's point that people throw the term "chemical" about without knowing what it means. It is a fair point to raise, I feel. People are being ignorant and foolish if they say they want food that does not contain chemicals. No such food exists. I pointed out the fact that water is a chemical specifically to highlight the point.

The 2nd Amendment
Everyone has their own opinions on it, but I feel rather strongly that 2nd Amendment rights should be supported, as it is not only necessary for self-defense, but as a measure of self-expression.

This summarizes my view nicely
