If I find the person who attempted to trick a member into giving up their password with this email before they admit to it I will ban them.

Wait what? A regular player has access to webdipmod?

Be careful or they may ban you from webdplomacy.net
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
25 Sep 13 UTC
Notice, that is not webdipmod that is webpmod, it's missing the "i". Attempting to access another players account is the worst offense on the site and has happened all of once, which resulted in a ban.
dyager_nh (619 D)

If they admit to it, will you not ban them?
Seems admitting or not you should ban them :)

Technically speaking, under the original rules of diplomacy, where you're allowed to spy on enemy orders and pencil in changes when they're not looking, wouldn't this be legal?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
25 Sep 13 UTC
Hahaha I don't think this can be counted as "within the spirit of the game," by any but the longest stretch of the imagination.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

No, they will not be banned if they admit it first, since they didn't mess with anyone's account yet.

Uh, read Sharp's The Game of Diplomacy. Worse has happened. Webdip has every right to restrict the kind of things they don't approve of, of course, as would any GM in a postal, email, or FtF game, but this is certainly not beyond the pale, or "contrary to the spirit of the game". It's...sad someone would even say that. No fighting spirit at all.

Admittedly, webdip is a little...well, it's geared toward a lower skill level, as you can see with the fact that it hand-feeds you possible orders and such. And the rules do specify that this is not an ok thing to do.

It's pretty funny, actually, and certainly within the spirit of the game. That said, I also don't object to the mods banning the person if they find him. After all, you have to get away with it for it to be good diplomacy.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

@Acosmist, not only is this against webdip rules, but it violates googles terms of usage, as well as phishing and impersonation laws.

The two rules on this site preventing account phishing scams are:
"6. You may not access another player's account without permission"
and
"9. Follow common sense
The rules above are mainly ones which might not be obvious; just because a specific rule isn't given here doesn't mean moderators can't stop people ruining the server for others!"

By the way, you have an email waiting about your ongoing game, make sure to answer it within 3 days or you will be violating rule 8.

"8. You must answer communication from site staff
You must answer any warnings or other messages sent to you by the moderators, because if you don't reply it will be assumed you have something to hide, and your account may be closed. As part of this, you must make sure that the email address provided is one you still check, because this normally how staff will communicate with you."

Oh, oh my. I am sorry I hurt your pride that badly, buddy. Get that thin skin checked out, ok?

You might want to check the libel laws, if we're throwing laws around. I have nothing more to say, but do not construe that as meaning I am waiving my right to sue.

Have a lovely day, defendant.

So just a tip, if you're actively cheating in a game posting on a mods thread in the forum isn't a good way to remain undetected.

You know, I actually believe his little tirade about Sharp's article. It's an interesting point. I have no problem with somebody intercepting/forging a letter, swapping somebody's orders for crap ones before they sign off on them when they aren't looking in F2F, or photoshopping a screenshot in a webdip game and emailing it to somebody.

At what point does it stop being "sneaky" and just become cheating? Maybe it is a bit of an arbitrary line. I can't really put my finger on the difference between pretending to be a moderator here and convincing somebody that you are the adjudicator in a play by mail game.

I would suggest that the email from a fake moderator IS within the spirit of the game. This should not, however, prevent the mods from taking appropriate action if somebody actually does log into somebody else's account.

Can we get a new rule that makes threatening to sue a bannable offense?

Look what you started draug!
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Sep 13 UTC
The person said something to the effect of "We need your password to check something on your account". I believe the recipient said sure and sent him a password. That is phishing and is against the *law*.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Sep 13 UTC
I was the one got the email and I sent "fuckyou99ways" as the password and BCCed the mods hoping the fucktard would try getting in with it so they would have in IP they could track it with.

Nothing against Obama, but I don't find his choice of dog compelling. Portuguese Water Dog? Kind of prissy, don't you think? And Bo? It's not a good dog name. Buddy Clinton, the chocolate lab, now that's a dog. He could have kicked the crap out of Socks the cat, but he was just too damn chill.

Hello all, I am leaving this game as I haven't had time for it and really haven't been interested in playing given my current priorities in real life. I would like it if someone would take over the one game I am still in, as the other players don't deserve to have a player CD. Please message me if you are interested in taking over a standard message anon game with long phases.
Thanks and goodbye!

Does the system keep track of how many times a person ditches a game and goes AWOL? I think that should be part of each player's stats. I know nobody likes losing, but I think if you signed up for a game then see it out to the end.
