I am going to create a variant.

my friend made one of NYC and we're trying it out. seems cool. he plays here too and his screenname is ottobot. chat him about it.

For a city one you could have:

Buildings = sea territories, only infantry can move inside them
Roads = coastal, infantry and tanks can move on them

In a NYC variant, the UN building should be like Switzerland.

Well the UN is hardly impassable! Maybe it should be a joker SC which connects to every other SC on the map :-)

The NYC variant is quite basic actually, and not of only the manhattan island (which most people consider NYC), but of the 5 boroughs. so it's more like a diplo map we're used to. I would like to ask permission of my friend first or i'll direct him to this thread directly.

Maybe the subways can link different parts of the city together? And make each neighborhood a province?

yea but given the densities of subways in NY, that would pretty much make every province connect to every other province.

lol yeah. Maybe just have a couple important stops and connections, Like times square to van courtland park. Also, what would central park be?

A variant by Stephen Agar, designed in April 1981, which is a complete revision of Mobtown I, which was invented by Nick Morris in mid-1975 and revised by Steve Doubleday. I have a very "small" variant. It involves seven factions of micro-organisms competing over limited resources with the goal of achieving dominance in their tiny environment consisting of a microscopic droplet of water sitting on a leaf. Conveniently, the map of this environment, starting positions of each faction, and the location of resources (SCs) is exactly the same as for the variant Alacavre:
