Solos of respective countries when games are modified by CD
I have a hypothesis, but I don't have the data to prove it. I'm hoping someone who would be interested in combing through the database can help me.

My hypothesis is this: When a country CD's (Any country) England and Turkey do disproportionately better than other countries because they are in a position to take advantage without exposing themselves so much.

looking for a new player in "Beginners World"
a player from our game "Beginners World" was banned - it's frozen antartica with a very good position and therefore big impact on the game if it would be left alone now ... would be a pity if we couldn't find a new player ...

The First American Civil War
I read an interssting piece in this week's New York Review of Books about the War of American Independance. The article drew attention to the large proportion (albeit a minority although substantial) of colonists who remained loyal to the crown. Indeed it went on to point out that preservation of the 'peculiar institution' was a significant motive lying behind behind much of the 'American' effort.

The WebDiplomacy Golden Record!
Well, somewhere, in the depths of space, Voyager 1 is floating around...and when it's found someday, by, I don't know, Zaphod Beeblebrox's race--hey, it's not impossible, just highly improbable!--they're find the famous Man/Woman (Adamn/Eve?) Plaque, along with the Golden Record inside...Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and...Chuck Berry?! ;) So: a musical piece, a spoken word (ie, book) piece, and a third, whichever you want--let's compile the WebDipl Golden Record!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Mar 11 UTC
obiwanobiwan's picks:

Music: "Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky
(They have Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart on the real Golden Record, and I'm sure at least the last two will get a nod from someone to be on this Record, but Tchaikovsky is, in my opinion, the best of the Russian composers and easily one of the Top 5 ever, maybe Top 3...Mozart/Beethoven are easily #1 and #2, in whichever order--although I think most would put Mozart first, as he influenced Beethoven and his operas just put him over the top in my opinion, but eitehr way works--and then you have Bach, Wagner, and a few others for that spot...and I like Tchaikvosky for that spot, he did it all, and all well, concertos and string quartets and ballets and operas and symphonies...so here he is, getting his due, in one of my favorite things to listen to--The Waltz, with Chorus, is THE FAVORITE THEME OF OBIWANOBIWAN! IT! IS! PERFECT! FOR! HIM!--and on top of that, I love Pushkin's original story-0in-sonnet-and-serial-form. So, here it is, for all the alien world to enjoy, a tale of a man making more of the dull drugery of everyday life than most, making even the mundane epic, and yet STILL screwing things up...and over a WOMAN, no less, isn't that always how it is? "Eugene Onegin," now
and forever!)

Spoken Word: "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare
(I'm taking the audio here from the Branagh version, as it's my favorite--and if you don't know why I'm picking this by now...you either haven't been paying attention, in which case, who could blame you, or else you're new, in which case, ask someone, "why does obiwanobiwan love "Hamlet" so much...and why does he love Tchaikovksy and classical and opera music so much, *I* like Lady Gaga, why doesn't he like HER, and why are his psots so incredibly wordy when one of his favorite Shakespeare characters, the one he actually PLAYED, once said "Brevity is the soul of wit," even though THAT character totally ignored that comment's meaning, as did the wordy fellow who stabbed him through the arras.) :p

And my third choice...

Other:
"Whatever the hell Obi Titles His book" by obiwanobiwan
(Hey, I might as well send something of mine up there! I'll send up a recording of the book I'm writing, all my ideas...and then I'm good, knowing that'll last a good while after I've shackled off this mortal coil, run down the curtain, joined the choir, and become and ex-parrot, er, person! Plus, while most of what I have so far I've kept neat and orderly and in the Hume/Spinozaa style of "get to the point and don't go on a tangent!"--it's still long, but that's because I want to carefully develop the points...and because I haven't edited it yet--I have a whole section where I take up Nietzsche and Co.'s method of writing down apothogems and short bursts of ideas and responses, so there's some responses to quotes and ideas from Nietzsche and Plato and all the rest there, and even--GASP!*--some thoughts obiwanopbiwan actually made without referencing ANYONE! HIS OWN THOUGHTS! ...Well, some, there's limited space on this Golden Record, and as you can tell, if I went on as long as I'd like to, I'd take up all the space on the Record with just one tangent's thought!) :p

"Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky
"West Side Story"
"Hamlet"
"The Lord of the Rings BBC radio version"

"The Advenures of Sherlock Holmes" (OBI'S HERO!) :D

No 1 of all:

The man who Planted Trees by Jean Giono, and you can read it here -
http://home.infomaniak.ch/~arboretum/man_tree.htm

Also -

Music: Theme from the Magnificent Seven (a different Bernstein) or Deborah's theme by Morricone.

Spoken word: Churchill - We shall never surrender! (Forgive this one from a Brit, we did, after all, indeed stand alone, against two great evil dictators).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkTw3_PmKtc&feature=related

Film (if allowed): The Outlaw Josey Wales
possible problem...if they hear the Lord of the rings story, would they think that's our actual history?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Mar 11 UTC
@goldfinger:

So? That'd be an AWESOME version of our history! (And what if they thought LOTR AND HAMLET were BOTH our history? You know...Aragor becomes king and marries arwen but is then murdered by Faramir and he takes over Gondor just as Frodo, who I guess is the Prince, why not, arrives with his friend Horatio Samwise Goungy, and wonders whether this whole King/Ring thing is to be or not to be as far as he goes, and if Faramir really DID kill Aragorn, until Gandalf shows up and starts to tail him because he thinks that Frodo's going mad over a love for the Elven Princess Lady who gave the gifts--yeah, I only ever saw the films, Tolkein's a great writer, but I just never had the patience as a kid to slog through the openings, it felt like cheating to skip, reading stories from the Arthurian Legend and The Odyssey got me into the story faster, and now that I'm in college I have about a dozen or more books to read for English classes, so now I don't have the time--and so they call for two of Frodo's childhood friends, Meriadoc Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Took to tail him!)

Now THAT'S a history worth saving! ;)

On the record so far:

"Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky
"West Side Story"
"Hamlet"
"The Lord of the Rings BBC radio version"
"Obi's Musings"
"The Advenures of Sherlock Holmes"
"Der Ring Des Nibelungen"
"Just So Stories"
"Faust"
"The Man Who Planted Trees"
"Theme From The Magnificent Seven"
"Churchill's 'We Will Never Surrender!' Speech"

So far, the aliens are going to get from this selection:

1. Our taste in music tended towards the sweepingly epic
2. Our taste in stories were epic and had a TON of deaths in them
3. Our taste in accents appears to be heavily British thus far... ;)

Oy, the stood alone myth. I'm sure the Greeks, Polish RAF units, and Commonwealth nations all collectively groan when they hear that.
Draugnar +1

@fulhamish +2 - The story behind the story of "The Man Who Planted Trees" is a fascinating story in itself and Churchill's speech has to be the best. It's the first quote in my profile.

@Goldfinger - LoTR was written to fill a hole in English history because we had no epic tales of our own.

My own personal picks (before reading others choices) are:-

Music: All the music every written by Jim Steinman and sung by Meat Loaf, or himself or Bonnie Tyler.
Written:The Complete Works of Larry Niven (best story teller ever!).
Spoken Word: I'd have to go with fulhamish - "We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender" - Winston Churchill, 4th June 1940.
Putin, I don't want to start debate here, but the Brits were the only country left in *Europe* with a full standing conventional army/navy/air force. In that sense they stood alone. In reality, yes, they didn't, but in the sense of a full nation they were the only ones

@SpeakerToAliens:

No fair, pick one of each. man...I can't put the whole of someone's career on there--why do you think I picked just one Shakespeare play?--I mean, this Intergalactic Golden Record only has so much memory space, you know... ;)

@Putin:

...

Just...just don't start...seriously, must every other thread you post on become a battle over something about politics and/or WWII?
@Obiwanobiwan:
"For Crying Out Loud" from the album "Bat Out of Hell" written by Jim Steinman and sung by Meat Loaf.
"The Moat in Gods Eye" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle

obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Mar 11 UTC
@Putin:

At least I set up a SPECIFIC THREAD for my philosophical ramblings...you jsut sort of take threads and, with Fasces, hijack them and turn them into politico-fests.

Shakespeare gives one line--you give an essay (and when OBI says you go on forever and too long...you go on forever and too long.)

I don't see where I'm a serial thread hijacker. I post about politics in political threads. I post about religion in religion threads. I said one sentence about the Battle of Britain here and you get pissy. Yet you routinely invoke Hume, Nietzsche and Hamlet even when it doesn't make sense.

And the idea that my posts are longer than your 10 page essays must be a joke.

You're always trying to muscle people out of your threads and/or silence people for the slightest deviation from your question.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Mar 11 UTC
I didn't say your posts were longer tha mine--but rather thatn your posts go OFF TOPIC in essay-form more than mine, or at least enough to take plenty of threads off into a debate between yourself and Faces about the same tired points of war and politics...

And yes, I DO try and keep to the topic, so yes, when you take my philosophy topic and go off on a tangent about soemthing only loosely-related and THAT becomes the main focus, yes, I'll ignore that as...well, if I posted on a subject that I wanted to talk about that subject...surprisingly enough, I want to talk about THAT, not another topic; WHAT your OPINION on THAT topic is, now that can be anything, but if I'm trying to talk about A and you take off on a tangent about D and Faces picks that up and it's a battle between you two, I'll go back to whoever anwered on the topic of A and leave D alone, since it's far from what A was asking.

And:

-Most of the time I use a Shakespeare quote as shorthand for a thought I have, as the Bard said it better than I could myself, ie, quoting "The Undiscovered Country" bit for Hamlet's view on death...I agree with his assessment, and as this isn't a formal essay, I'll just stick in Shakespeare's words, as they say it better than I can myself, and go from there and try and BUILD on the quote and what the quote--what I--mean.

-Nietzsche I reference as I agree with him...so how Nietzche's references don't make sense...well, give me an example?

-HUME I don't quote all that much, I invoke his ideas and method, but not really any quotes, and as Hume is the exemplar of the logical, empirical method...well, how is THAT off-topic, if I'm talking about what can be sensed and what's beyond senses--the metaphysical--how is that NOT relevant to what Hume said, as eh practically devotes his entire philosophy to the empirical and combating notions of the metaphysical.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

And SEE?

This has gone froma discussion of what you'd put on a Record to a pissing contst between you and I because you had to piss on someone's choice which you KNEW would start and argument...

I'm just ashamed I was too stupid to actually fall into this and have it.

Well, it's late--er, early--so I suppose the fatigue...no, just plain stupid on m part, but at least I can correct that error and drop the subject and return to the real subject.

After all--get oulled off the subject once, shame on you, fall for that stunt twice, shame on me...
fulhamish (4134 D)

@ obi This has gone froma discussion of what you'd put on a Record to a pissing contst between you and I because you had to piss on someone's choice which you KNEW would start and argument...

To be fair to Putin I actually think that the UK has 'lived in the past' since this epic piece of history. In that sence it has suffered from the myth and to some extent still labours under the burden today. If I really wanted to wind him up, though, I would have mentioned the Nazi-Soviet pact directly rather than made a reference to 'two' dictators, I was being diplomatic.

In passing isn't interesting that we got lend-lease while the Germans and Japanese got the Marshall plan, Funny old world eh......one can only hope that the Chinese will be so magnamimous towards the USA.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 Mar 11 UTC
You have this bizarre idea in your head that I somehow debate with Fasces all the time. I don't know where you got this from, but I rarely debate with him.

"And yes, I DO try and keep to the topic, so yes, when you take my philosophy topic and go off on a tangent about soemthing only loosely-related and THAT becomes the main focus, yes, I'll ignore that as"

But you don't ignore it. You fail to understand regardless of what side conversation people are having (which is usually related to the original topic), you can continue on the original topic that and people will reply. Instead you get all agitated and whine that a thread is 'hijacked'. It's not as if there is a limited amount of space per thread and it's being eaten up by recalcitrants who don't follow Obi's orders on what exactly we shall discuss at any particular time.

"about the same tired points of war and politics..."

As opposed to your tired means of finding any way you can think of to declare to the world that you love Hamlet, including this thread. You claim that the great moral difference between your side ramblings and mine is that you only say a sentence about your beloved troika of Nietzsche/Shakespeare/Hume, whereas I derail the entire conversation. Ok, if you say so.

"This has gone froma discussion of what you'd put on a Record to a pissing contst between you and I because you had to piss on someone's choice which you KNEW would start and argument..."

Ah yes, this was all part of my evil plot once again to infuriate Obi by provoking him into another one of his rants about how people don't abide by his discussion parameters.

OK, fine, Putin, I give up or give in or whatever, talk if you want about whatever you want...quite frankly, debating about what you debate vs. waht I debate and how we debate with the stuff that we like to debate with is...

I haven't read the thread, but television and film should be included as well (as separate categories) as they're such an integral part of modern culture.
"If so, how old were you when you got it all done? ( for the record, I was 15 )"

Damn, you must have been superiorly dedicated. I bought the complete works of shakespeare once, and it's over a 1000 pages. And it's not the easiest read either. Add that to the generally erratic attention span of a 15 year old, and that's a pretty serious accomplishement.

@bas - It's true. I've always been a read-aholic. My mom realized it when she came upon me reading the telephone book as a wee boy. I told her that I read everything else in the house. It's one of her favourite stories about me. I understood Shakespeare, which made him easier to read, I guess.

They are by far the most humorous gathering of people on the planet that function off of stupid and silly humor. They do not need to be crude or rude to make people laugh, although sometimes they exploit idiots. For example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvBbVA36y1U.
