Feb '11 GR Challenge Game Status
Where are they now? The thread to sign up was bumped for weeks, but since they started, I haven't heard much. I looked through old forum posts and couldn't find the links. Did anyone save the links to those games? Would be interesting to check on their progress...

Dear Mods,

I emailed the mods email address three days ago, and again yesterday, to report a serious multiaccounting problem involving several games. I have had no response.

Solos of respective countries when games are modified by CD
I have a hypothesis, but I don't have the data to prove it. I'm hoping someone who would be interested in combing through the database can help me.

My hypothesis is this: When a country CD's (Any country) England and Turkey do disproportionately better than other countries because they are in a position to take advantage without exposing themselves so much.

Unread message
I am playing a game called World Diplomacy 5. It has anonymous players.
There is no messaging & no press.
Yet it is showing an envelope & saying unread message.
How do I open it?

"New Gunboat?" EOG statement

I figured out I wouldn't win and Germany deserved to be in the draw. Good game, all! I had never done so well with Italy, so I'm proud of this one.

looking for a new player in "Beginners World"
a player from our game "Beginners World" was banned - it's frozen antartica with a very good position and therefore big impact on the game if it would be left alone now ... would be a pity if we couldn't find a new player ...

This is the game link:

Question
Hi. A player has just admitted to me in a message that they are on a new account after being banned on a previous account for cheating. Would the best thing to do be to email a mod?

Parlez français en jouant Diplomacy!
Bonjour!

The First American Civil War
I read an interssting piece in this week's New York Review of Books about the War of American Independance. The article drew attention to the large proportion (albeit a minority although substantial) of colonists who remained loyal to the crown. Indeed it went on to point out that preservation of the 'peculiar institution' was a significant motive lying behind behind much of the 'American' effort.

The WebDiplomacy Golden Record!
Well, somewhere, in the depths of space, Voyager 1 is floating around...and when it's found someday, by, I don't know, Zaphod Beeblebrox's race--hey, it's not impossible, just highly improbable!--they're find the famous Man/Woman (Adamn/Eve?) Plaque, along with the Golden Record inside...Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and...Chuck Berry?! ;) So: a musical piece, a spoken word (ie, book) piece, and a third, whichever you want--let's compile the WebDipl Golden Record!

Improve Everywhere
They are by far the most humorous gathering of people on the planet that function off of stupid and silly humor. They do not need to be crude or rude to make people laugh, although sometimes they exploit idiots. For example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvBbVA36y1U. Sometimes i wonder how humanity hasn't already killed itself.

Rango
went in to the movie not expecting much...
However I was completely drawn in by the whole spoof of stereotypes in the old Spaghetti Westerns. It wont win any awards but I thought it was a great couple of hours spent.

I like Johnny Depp. I think "Gilbert Grape," "Pirates otC I," "Ed Wood" and "Sleepy Hollow" are all very good. But I saw "Rango" yesterday, misled by the generally good reviews, and found it dark, violent, predictable, slightly vulgar, slow and fatally self-aware in an ironic, in-jokey way. If you loved it, peace to you. I did not. The character designs were beautiful, though.

Wow...This is disappointing. Was planning on seeing it next weekend. Maybe now I wont.
Perhaps is was that I went in without much in the way of expectations. It seems l liked the things that may have turned others off. I rememeber the spaghetti western genre so it was the stereotypes & predctable plot lines that I thought were funny. If were talking about the same thing the characters (voices especially) were great I heard very familiar voices in almost every one of them.

I do respect that "Rango" has a strong style and point of view from an animation standpoint. As far as the comedic take on spaghetti westerns, I'd just watch "Blazing Saddles" again.

Abge, if you missed it and are in the mood for a beautiful animated movie with a better story, "The Secret of Kells" is very good. I have to admit I also really enjoyed "Tangled" as an old-school romp with some catchy songs and good jokes.

For beautiful animation (CG), watch Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. It's also a more mature story.

For beautiful traditional animation (alal old school Disney), watch Watership Down.
