Where are they now? The thread to sign up was bumped for weeks, but since they started, I haven't heard much. I looked through old forum posts and couldn't find the links. Did anyone save the links to those games? Would be interesting to check on their progress...

Settlers of Catan
Do not read this thread if you are a Catan purist.

My brothers and I came up with a new variant for Settlers: The Settlers of Whoops, the Terraforming Plant went way out of Control over night. The land tiles represent simply land and all the resources are shuffled together face down. When you get resources you ignore the terrain and simply take the right number of resources.
Another variant we came up with is based on the same concepts but with land types bumpy and flat. The mountains hills and half of the forests (marked for identification) are bumpy while the plains, pastures and the other half of the forests are flat. When you take resources you simply take the right number of bumpy and flat resources since the brick, ore and half the wood are shuffled together in one pile with everything else in another pile.

Not a Catan purist but I think adding more luck to it would only remove some of the strategy. A lot of the strategy to the game seems to be around picking the right spots to build to get resources. Trading happens a lot because you end up with excesses of one resource and deficits in other resources. With these variants I would be less likely to trade because I have a 20% chance of pulling what I need on the next turn anyways.

I like these ideas.
Settlers was my first foray into modern Euro-board games. (Thank you, Germany, for your outstanding game designers and board game export industry.)

A few years later, though, Settlers seems so simple, and involving so much luck, compared to others, that I'm not sure why you'd want to randomize the resources to introduce more luck. On the other hand, doing so might offset one of the drawbacks of the game, as I see it: it's very hard, if not impossible, to catch up once you fall behind.

I'm sick of Settlers.

What other modern board games do you guys play?

Some others I really enjoy are Puerto Rico, Power Grid, Agricola, and Caylus. After some time playing such (mostly) pure strategy games, though, I had to switch it up, and bought Wok Star a few months ago. Love it!
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
06 Mar 11 UTC
@kaner406: I hadn't played it for a few years now, and just played again recently. It was pretty fun, after such a long hiatus. I remember it being so crazy complex when all you've done is Monopoly and Risk and crap like that, but yeah, I've been burned out on Settlers before too.

Thumbs up for Puerto Rico and Agricola. Own Power Grid but haven't gotten it to the table (got a dozen games at Xmas so it's taking a while to get through them all). Really want to try Caylus.

Other good suggestions Twilight Struggle, Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers, Pandemic

I liked this game, it was a chalenge for me for a bit. but man, im burned out of it, the dice is way to daym influential.

i was in a game i got by both 6's, and 8's
and 14 9's were rolled. within the first 25 rolls. 0-8's, 2-6's, 8-7's, and 1 - 4. it was crazy.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
06 Mar 11 UTC
@Ekul: You could try the cards instead of the dice to determine what gets "rolled." Makes the odds work out as they should over time (with a little bit of randomness, because all but 6 get used before you shuffle again).

@ZombineControl: Wok Star is cooperative, like Pandemic, but it has the advantage of involving everyone, even if they are first time players. (Pandemic is great, but new players can get their move dictated to them by experienced players unless you have experienced players who are very good at holding back on the advice.)

@MKECharlie - Yeah, I have seen some video reviews of Wok Star, looks interesting, especially the real time element but I am not 100% it would go over with my group. Hoping to get a chance to try it before dropping any cash on it.

Wok Star is a nice break from Analysis-paralysis games. It went over well with my group. Don't get me wrong; I really like staring at a board and agonizing over difficult decisions (I play Diplomacy, after all), but when you need a break from them, it's perfect. It's pretty easy to adapt rules for 5 and 6 players, too.

Anyone here played Le Havre? It's by the same guy who made Agricola (it's sort of a sequel, but only in that you can see similarities in game mechanic in one or two places). I got it recently, and I've been pleasantly surprised. It's a game that you really have to know where you're going from the start, so on your first try you likely won't win.

Le Havre is another one on my wish list but as of yet I havn't tried it

Also, I have to claim half credit for the invention of the bumpy/flat and terraforming variants :D
ZombieControl (100 D)

@Graeme01: How do they play? Reading the brief descriptions it really seems like they would make trying to grab the spots with high probability a requirement, increase luck in a already lucky game and discourage trading. Is this correct?
Graeme01 (100 D)
06 Mar 11 UTC
Can't say. Honestly, I haven't gotten as far as playing it. Gman314 may have though, his brothers like board games, my sister doesn't. I would say that your assessment is valid though. Keep in mind however that this isn't really a serious strategy variant, it's just a way to have a fun/funny game as a break from intense strategy. Or, possibly to ease someone into learning the game if they're new to strategy games.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

Caylus was the first game with that "worker placement" mechanic that Agricola uses, from what I remember reading on BoardGameGeek.com. I bought it based on that, and like it quite a bit. Close to zero luck, though. Heavy on the AP. Good stuff.

@zombiecontrol, a word of advice for doing well in Le Havre: get steel. It's how you win :D

I haven't played the terraforming variants yet either but they aren't supposed to be strategic. They're just supposed to be a laugh. Primarily to think of rather than play. We (Graeme01, my brothers and myself) also came up with a few Seafarers of Catan variants at the same time which mostly involved players being in serious shortage of specific resources and then scrambling for a resource that no one has and trading with others. We played one of them and it was basically ridiculous, partially because our numbers were imbalanced.

About other board games, I play quite a few. I'm not just into crazy variants. However, I prefer the light strategy games to the heavy thinking ones most of the time. This being said, I also like to keep playing diplomacy. Since most of the play happens off of the board, this is one of my favourite heavy strategy games.

In German there "Settlers, Das Buch", or something like that. It contains hundreds of variants (including material) that were send to the creator by players. Quite interesting, with Vulcano's, Balloon's etc.

Solos of respective countries when games are modified by CD
I have a hypothesis, but I don't have the data to prove it. I'm hoping someone who would be interested in combing through the database can help me.

My hypothesis is this: When a country CD's (Any country) England and Turkey do disproportionately better than other countries because they are in a position to take advantage without exposing themselves so much.

looking for a new player in "Beginners World"
a player from our game "Beginners World" was banned - it's frozen antartica with a very good position and therefore big impact on the game if it would be left alone now ... would be a pity if we couldn't find a new player ...

The First American Civil War
I read an interssting piece in this week's New York Review of Books about the War of American Independance. The article drew attention to the large proportion (albeit a minority although substantial) of colonists who remained loyal to the crown. Indeed it went on to point out that preservation of the 'peculiar institution' was a significant motive lying behind behind much of the 'American' effort.

Well, somewhere, in the depths of space, Voyager 1 is floating around...and when it's found someday, by, I don't know, Zaphod Beeblebrox's race--hey, it's not impossible, just highly improbable!--they're find the famous Man/Woman (Adamn/Eve?) Plaque, along with the Golden Record inside...Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and...Chuck Berry?! ;) So: a musical piece, a spoken word (ie, book) piece, and a third, whichever you want--let's compile the WebDipl Golden Record!

They are by far the most humorous gathering of people on the planet that function off of stupid and silly humor. They do not need to be crude or rude to make people laugh, although sometimes they exploit idiots. For example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvBbVA36y1U. Sometimes i wonder how humanity hasn't already killed itself.
