Just venting - another idea on CD's
With our endless programming resources, I think that anyone who has "left" a game or went CD (they would be the same, no?) should be unable to process a move in any other game until they rejoin and move.... and should suffer a two week "time out" in the penalty chair. :)

How do you play live non-gunboat?
I'm new to the board (but not to the game) and I played in a live gunboat game recently. At times it seemed like five minutes was barely enough to finish thinking through your orders and doublechecking them, especially if you have a lot of units. So what I want to know is, how do people play this way in non-gunboat? I don't think I could possibly keep up even two conversations and submit orders in that timeframe. Am I just slow?

Liberal Democrats
I think it is very interesting what is happening to the Liberal Democrats in the UK. Since they went into coalition government with the evil Tories, party members have been quitting in their thousands, with many apparently joining the Labour Party, which has reported the biggest influx of new members for several years. Is anyone here a Lib Dem supporter? What's your view?

Auto-disband?
Hey there-

I suspect this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find the information so here goes: how come it hasn't been coded in the software to auto-disband units when there is no other choice available to the player?

iPod / moblie compatable
I would like to see the website become iPod compatible. I already know that iPods will work with the game but I would like to see a friendlier interface. Plus people being able to submit their moves on the go would be much easier and we'd have less people missing turns.

Any ideas?

I think that it works fine with the iOS interface to be honest. Maybe that's just me though. The only thing I might improve is the message scrolling, because even though you can do it it's a bit of a pain.

I am typing this from the iPad... Enter all my moves off the iPad and send all my messages of my iPad and play all my live games of the iPad so.... Sometimes off the iPhone too so...

I play off my iPad too and the only thing I can't get is the full message history to scroll - how do you do it jman?
spyman (424 D(G))
30 Sep 10 UTC
With the iPhone/iPad you need to use two fingers to scroll the in-game messages.
Otherwise I suggest using Opera Mobile, just for reading the messages. For some reason the message window is much larger with Opera Mobile.

This site works quite well off my Galaxy S.
spyman (424 D(G))

I find the site seems to work well on my iphone. It is easy to enter order and see the map. The messaging is not perfect but workable, and as I mentioned using Opera Mobile for the messaging seems to be quite good.
Which browser do you use on the Galaxy, largham?
Bit curious about the Galaxy. How does it compare to the iPhone. Can you get good apps for it? The texting system looks pretty cool.

jman777 (407 D)

I always play from my iPad as well, and like I said before other than the fact that scrolling up is a pain it works fantastically.

@BornAgain, you touch one finger on the messages, and then use another two to scroll. If you don't put one finger down first in the message area than it will just scroll the entire page like normal.

Also I heard about "facebook places"

jman777 (407 D)

Yeah the whole twitter and facebook "places" feature is majorly creepy, so I don't have it enabled. haha I don't see anything bad though with smart phones in general.
largeham (149 D)

Using Android, I can't remember which version though. It's a lot like the iPhone, but I haven't used the latter much so I can't be sure; at least the layout is quite similar. As for swype, the texting thing, I hate it. I prefer to use the qwerty board. I find it quite complicated, maybe I'm just conservative when it comes to using technology. However, my mum seems to like it. You should be able to get many apps for it, most apps now are made for both Android and Apple.

I do have to agree Sic, Apple is quite controlling with their software as compared to other companies.
Sicarius (673 D)

no not the iphone
like the whole idea of a device that does what an iphone does.
or a blackberry or an ipad or whatever
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Sep 10 UTC
I'm saying it doesnt matter if apple is controlling as a company, the issue is the actual function and use of an iphone. especially when it has facebook (which is EXTREMELY creepy)
especially facebook loctions.

I mean....

come on.

You do realize that these technologies allow anyone to contact anyone in the *world* at any time. That's something we couldn't do less than 20 years ago. And, it's not all shallow relationship status updates, either. Think of the protests in Iran. Most of our info on that came from twitter feeds.

imho Mobile version of webdiplomacy is a must. i mean not applications, just a wap page for lower data transfer rates.

i am living in a (almost) 3rd world country and paying ~5$ for 100 MB 2G/3G (usually 2g) mobile internet.

In regards to the OP.

I really don't think it's necessary. As people have pointed out, the website works fine (with some minor exceptions) on a mobile browser. What I don't think people realize is that by asking for a mobile app, they're actually asking Kestas to maintain two large projects instead of one.
Draugnar (0 DX)

With regards to the topic of mobile development... If you want tit that bad, volunteer to do the development. This is a private site with a very small set of developer donating their time. Wish lists are all fine and good so long as they remain wish lists and not demands lists.

Well shit, I'll start developing right now if it will get me tits. Now I know what Steve ballmer was going on about
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))

My aim, which Ive talked about elsewhere, is to develop an API for letting programs easily interface with the site and then letting others handle the development of apps.

I don't own a smartphone and even if I did it's an unfamiliar platform that others could probably do better, and making it possible for others to make use of our code fits in best with the open source approach which has served us well here, but the division of responsibilities I think will make the open model we use work much better for letting those who want to try things try them

Besides developing an app for one platform gets you tit, and since we have android and iphone users and they're best in pairs I think everyone will benefit if we take the dual-platform approach

@Sicarius "does anyone see any disturbing parallels between iphones and dystopian novels"
No. What I do see is an incredibly useful tool. Thus far it has not affected my life adversely in any way I can think of.

Yeah, a pair of tits is better than one tit. But we need to include the Blackberry platform and get the triple tits from Total Recall. :-)

American and Europe: Did We Get Kicked Out? Walked Out? Both?
I love hockey, so I go to hockey forums to have a chat--second they find out I'm American half of the Canadian fans automatically assume I think American franchises are better (they're not, by the way.) On other sites, LOTS of Euro/US bashing, on both sides, but it seems the Euros have the edge. It's like the Euros/Canada have a club, and we're not invited...or were and then got crossed off for...who? What? Why can't we be in the Western Culture Club again?

Live game IM group
Those of you that play live games probably realise that the system for setting them up isn't perfect. There are often 7 players up for a game who don't quite overlap or miss games that have been started. When you do get a game started, it's not uncommon to get a CD, and it seems to attract the occasional cheater as well.
