I see a lot of games titiled "gunboat' Is that just a series?

Gunboat is a variant where you don't talk. Probably not the best choice for your first couple games.

Yeah. It does to me, and I play in gunboat games.

Pros - You can't talk, so it doesn't take hardly any time at all out of your schedule. Also, it is a nice, pure strategy exercise.

Cons - It's really only half of the intended game, and it could get really frustrating when you see about a dozen things you could easily do with just 2 words to a neighbor.

Overall, like I said, it IS a good strategy exercise with minimal time sink.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...

Well, I don't want to piss off any Australians on here, but I'm having a rather negative experience with it. Mine's rather unique for non-public reasons, though. I'm moving back to the US before August, probably within a month.

Sounds good. I've just been joining 48-72 hour ones since I'm not sure when I'm going to be flying back, and I'd hate to miss too many moves while flying.

So the only way you are allowed to communicate is through "displays of military power". And it is useful not just to make enemies but to make allies. Try and support the move of someone you want to ally with. They may not do that move, but if they check the big map they'll see you are trying to work with them.

indeed, it would be great if you shared with us how you found this community - have you played dip online before? (PBEM or another site maybe)

also - i've noticed you joined 4 games at once... I'd highly recommend you try to stagger your game-starts... the first (spring 1901) season is the most intensive as far as talking to people... so having only 6 others to talk to in a day is better than 24... well, i you have a life outside of dip.

one more thing... ppsc (points per supply center) tends to be the norm on this site, but the diplomacy game norm is actually wta (winner take all) which is the 'real' way to play diplomacy ftf (face to face). this itself is a big topic of debate on this site, but I would highly recommend you play some wta games as well

oh - and... to enjoy the game fully, take a few hours and go read some articles about how to play... some intro articles (tons of them out there) my favorite spot for good starter articles you can find through the "DipWiki" tab at www.diplomaticcorp.com
