Setting stop losses are good. Setting stop wins however is quite retarded.

don't like the equity or the gold play , but the euro play is kinda safe....i like the idea of long term short gold ,but with news headlines moving the market, people flock to gold when times are amiss

joker thats not true, setting expectations of a certain stop loss or gain is quite normal

So how do you decide when's a good time to sell for a gain?

Capping your wins is really not an optimal way to gamble. Adjusting your stop loss accordingly based on your wins makes a lot more sense and will over time result in more money.

in a short term play, not an investment, knowing what your gain or loss based on the amount of many at risk, is quite smart

My GOLD position was taken out quickly, I sold an upspike and it spiked a bit more (did i mention that most of my bets lose?)

@Jok3r - thx for your comments. I set a stop/limit based on my knowledge or lack thereof at the time I place the bet, I keep them under review (but without watching every tick) If I see that I could squeeze a few more points out of a winning trade I will alter the limit value, likewise I trail up a stop if things are shaping up nicely.

@ssorenn - My equity plays are under constant review, we have some risk events later this week ECB and NFP so may exit early.

To be specific, I trade a mean reversion on the short end I the yield curve. Based on historical value. That's as Lehmans term as I can make it. Sorry:(

Whilst I'm a little ahead all but gold are still open positions so I can't bank a profit just yet - tomorrow they could all head south on ECB news. Watch this space.

My EUR/USD short got took out by a spike when Draghi was speaking, I'd brought stop up prior to rate decision and speach in case the Euro reversed. Small profit +15 pts Other Trades (FTSE and DOW longs) are still open around last nights figures.

Confirmed running loss = -15 pts

Closed my FTSE & DOW Positions ahead of the NFP risk event this afternnon

FTSE closed @ 6676.5 for +33.2pts
DOW closed @ 16596.9 for 80.2pts

Total running profit 98.4pts

Unlikely to gamble again before markets close.
