Short Story of the Day
Hi! I am starting a new thread where I will post a new short story each day this week (each business day, anyway). I am hoping people will read and (if inclined) discuss the stories.

So, the following is my first forum discussion in the intro to business practice...
The topic of this forum thread was "Is Wal-Mart's business practices good or fair? Both or neither?"

the liberals will probably like my response and the conservatives hate it, but I think it will be an interesting discussion for us here and I got to refer back to a HuffPo article listed here sometime back. So COOL!

Of Twerking and Terrible, Terrible Pop Songs--What Do We Pay Attention To?
So until today I was blissfully unaware of what the VMAs even were, let alone (Facebook jokes aside) what happened there with a certain Ms. Cyrus and...you know, forgoing all of...that (though really, WTF?!) I'd rather ask another question--assuming that most here likewise couldn't care less about Ms. Cyrus or Mr. Bieber or *Insert Pop Icon For the Masses Here*...what DO we care about, and why does the majority gravitate to these things we raise eyebrows at?

Political nepotism
I am the relative of my local Member of Parliament. As such, my desire to go into politics is hindered by the fact that I will be accused of nepotism no matter what I achieve by my own merit. What is the best thing to do in this situation?

Lol...

If your last name is Kennedy and you're in politics, I hope you have a gravestone preordered.
join anyway, miliband's etc. with the party system we have it will probably help you to have a relative too!
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
I meant forget about *just* Presidential politics. The Kennedys had a President, two Senators, and three Congressmen in their family. Three different generations have held federal office, all direct descendents of Joe Kennedy, Sr. The Bush's have had two Presidents plus Jeb as Governor, but the Kennedys...
Draugnar (0 DX)

And bo, only two of the six Kennedy politicians have died. So that was simply a moronic statement.

So what if you are accused of nepotism if you are passionate about your endeavor, and doing the best you can for the people you represent.

I'll tell you what...if you can't stand a little heat before you even play at politics ("Wahhhh...I *might* get accused of nepotism...") then you don't have the balls to hold office and make the difficult decisions.
hecks (164 D)
03 Sep 13 UTC
@Draug,
I was mostly joking. It just came out funny is all.

But don't forget that in addition to the two presidents and the governor(s), Bush 41's father was Senator Prescott Bush, and *his* father, Samuel Bush, was chair of the Reserve Bank of Cleveland and a political appointee under among others Wilson and Hoover.

And 41's Mother was related to Supreme Court Justice David Davis and his family's political dynasty.

Draug - Bush's girls aren't interested and are just living their lives. Chelsea, on the other hand, has manipulated herself in to bullshti broadcasting jobs and such that she is not qualified to do...isnt' that *exactly* the thing we hate about nepotism? Someone getting a position based upon name, rather than credentials?

^^ And to think, Chelsea Clinton's only qualifications for being a political reporter are a Master's in International Relations from Oxford, a second Masters in Public Health policy from Columbia, and is working on a Ph.D. from Oxford, whereas Jenna Bush has a Bachelor's in English Lit from University of Texas, plus at least two years' experience as a teacher's aide.
Randomizer (722 D)

You forgot all the Bush girl's experience in getting drinks in bars before they turned 21. They've got plenty of practice getting stuff that they aren't qualified for.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
hecks - I was unaware of the Bush girl job...and to that, I say I disagree with that, too.

Ever seen Chelsea Clinton in front of a camera. I could give a shit what she has done to leverage her connections, etc...she has **no** place in front of a camera. She sucks.

The discussion is about nepotism...and she is a *clear* example of *bad* nepotism, if by nepotism we mean leveraging family connections to secure employment you otherwise wouldn't have.

As for her education, etc...go sit in a think-tank, ***earn*** some credentials.

As for the pieces of paper you point to...I could really give a shit. I've met more "smart" people with degrees in hand and no experience than you know, and most of them are arrogant beyond my ability to tolerate. No offense, but your pretty degree don't mean shit until you get a little real-world experience under your belt.

/\ Applies to Clinton and Bush girls' equally.

@Krellin,
I've never seen Chelsea on TV, but I totally believe you. All I know is Jenna Bush-Hager sucks, too. Your eyes don't particularly suffer, but that grating voice combined with her inability to pronounce *anything* properly makes my ears bleed. In fairness to NBC, they seem to know she has no business doing news, and they never give her anything more substantial than puff pieces for the Today Show... usually about a celebrity wedding and/or her own family.

I'll fire 'em both if you will. (Worth nothing... they both work for NBC.)
hecks (164 D)
03 Sep 13 UTC
^ That should say "worth noting" not "worth nothing".
krellin (80 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
I actually fired NBC from my TV long ago, at least from any "news" perspective...so I am free from the ravages of incompetence in all it's polished and unpolished forms.

Now, if they did Jenna-in-the-nude day I might tune in...Maybe she should follow in Leather's (weiner's babe..) path and start her real career...
hecks (164 D)
03 Sep 13 UTC
@Krellin,
Would you? I certainly wouldn't make a special point of tuning in.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
If my eyes were pinned up with tooth picks and I had to watch *any* broadcast news or the Jenna-in-the-nude day...I'll take JITN. I *know* the broadcast 'news' programs make me want to puke...Jenna I'm sure I could handle...

I will be leaving this site (for now)
There is a very obvious reason associated with this, specifically that we are discussing the same thing over and over again, and not getting anywhere. I certainly enjoyed my time on this forum, but now I am moving on to a Traditionalist Catholic forum (http://catholicforum.fisheaters.com) because it sounds like a fun trolling project and I can't let Sbyvl get away from me. If you wish to contact me, you can't, because phones didn't exist in 1625 and that's the time I live in.
