Individual racism is toothless until the racists have a means of power over their victims. A professor who "punishes" his white students with lesser grades for equal work. A street gang that pulls a truck driver out of his truck and nearly beats him to death just because he was caught drving while white... Individual racism can be deadly or harmful to the future of the targets of that racism.

@mendax, I won't go any further with this because it won't get anywhere, but I would like to clarify two things with you.
1) The lack of a father figure does not mean the mother is to blame. In fact I would go as far as to say the mother is almost NEVER to blame. Put quite simply Males need male example and females need female example. That is why BOTH parents are equally important. Without a father a boy will never find the moral example he needs no matter how great a parent his mother is because humans are just wired that way. The mother may have the best morals in the world but it wouldn't make much difference. I wish things weren't like that but they are. When a boy doesn't have a good moral example he can become more prone to getting involved with groups he shouldn't, such as gangs, and is unfairly drawn into pointless violence.
2) Conservatives care just as much about class and the poor as liberals. You use those tea party extremists as a point of reference for judging all conservatives while at the same time arguing that stereotypes are bad. Quite hypocritical. The point is I take a conservative view towards such issues as this because I believe the issue lies not only in economic standing but moral standing as well. I believe we should take care of our people, particularly the underprivileged, but I take issue with the means. We cannot just throw money and apologies at them and hope for the best. We need to be down their with them and helping to build them up so they can take care of themselves. That is what people do for each other.

Yes, Draugnar. Relatively toothless, but that's only on a statistical level. I'm certainly not trying to say that there is no individual impact. I really don't know how prevalent that kind of thing is. I can say with some confidence that I've never felt a victim of it.

Sure, I get that these things happen, you'll hear no arguments there.

This is my point: if you poll white people, the majority will say that they have never or only rarely experienced what we're calling "individual" racism. If you poll blacks, that's absolutely not the case.

None of that detracts from your point that any given case is equally disgusting, and it doesn't matter who is perpetrating or the victim. I'm only arguing the prevalence.

Then we are in agreement. I only take exception with Mendax at his insistence that it isn't racism or sexism if it happens to a white or to a man because racism and sexism, according to Mendax, are only institutional. His view is the worst kind of racism: the subtle "it's justice not racism" view that the white male deserves to be downtrodden, injured, or even killed to make up for injustices not perpetrated by that individual.
