I know it's a few days late, but I thought it'd be nice to have a thread to appreciate a great baseball player's remarkable achievement, even if he is a Yankee now. Ichiro is awesome.

Local minimum wage
How local should minimum wage be? I just read something about minimum wage in Holland, but the costs of living in Amsterdam are certainly higher than on the countryside no?

It's good to be back!
Hey everyone! Not sure if anyone remembers me, I wasn't an especially vocal member, but after an eight month sabbatical, I'm looking to get started back up in diplomacy. Would anyone be interested in a 2-day phase game, probably a 100 point buy-in? If so, post in this thread, and I'll send you a PM with a password on a first-come, first-served basis.

Interview dilemma
See inside.
2ndWhiteLine (2606 D(B))

As some of you might know, I started a new job about three months ago. The job is great, but I also applied for a different job who just gave me an interview in two weeks for a position that is more in line with what I want to do as well as paying better. The dilemma is that I'm going to be moving again, likely next May or June, and wouldn't even be at the new job for a year before having to leave. Should I mention this in the interview? Say anything at all? Or even bother with the interview?

Is the new job in New Orleans?

Its in Senegal, actually. Some kid is leaving a job with an NGO and they want to hire a replacement.

Take the interview if it improves your career and is line with what YOU want to do. Jobs are not cages...do what you love if you can do it, 2WL.

Do **NOT** tell them in the first interview that you are possibly moving. If you are working with a recruiter, I would inform the recruiter, but tell them to NOT inform the client.

Question...why do you *have* to move? Is this for a spouse that you are moving or what? That situation is unclear, thus it is harder to give best advise.

lol glad i opened this thread.

Anyway I wouldn't mention it. Who can predict the future?

Damn...I can't believe I fell for that...but then again...hey, I was actually trying to be nice to 2WL...
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Aug 13 UTC
If you are for real, 2WL, do the interview, but as krellins ays, do *not* tell them you will be there for s ashort time. Instead, wait until you get the offer then talk to them about the options. One thing I wouldn't do, is take the job then short notice quit. It looks bad on the resume and kills a reference. If they offer and know when yo go to accept that it is for a short term, they will be more likely to give you a good reference later down the line. And don't fall for that "they can only say start date, end date, salary" bull. HR people have their ways of skirting the law. And you manager can always give you a glowing recommendation or just rattle off the SES line and that tells the person on the other end volumes.

One option you might start opening up is asking job 1 to pay you more the moment you realize you're in the friend zone with job 2.

It is definitely for real. My fiance is the one who needs to move, and its been decided for some time, the final location is the only question. I am definitely going to do the interview, if for nothing else than the experience with relevant questions, but I was thinking along the same line about the poor reference and resume history.

I was also thinking that it may look good on me that I got a job and within four months was given a job higher up with more responsibility, even if it wasn't a direct promotion.
2ndWhiteLine (2606 D(B))
26 Aug 13 UTC
And I don't think I can negotiate much with my current salary, given that I'm still a fairly new employee and that it's a kind of low ranking government job.
krellin (80 DX)
26 Aug 13 UTC
2WL...first off, nothing a year from now is decided....

Second, maybe a year from now the company can arrange for you to work remote (don't know what the job is)

Third...you start your career in the field you WANT as soon as possible. Noone will fault you for taking a job in your field of interest.

I disagree with Draug on the short notice thing. You take a job and have it a year and then switch to a new job IN THE SAME TOWN...then you look like a dick.

But when you interview and say, "Had to move...fiance..." that all you have to say. everyone will understand it wasn't your fault you had a short term job -- so take the job in your field.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
26 Aug 13 UTC
krellin's post was somewhat confusing but i think i agree.

Just don't say anything, take the job if they offer it, leave as late as you must. When you leave, you don't have to mention you'd known all along you were leaving.

After all, as I said, who knows what the future holds? You can just as easily represent it that you weren't sure until you told them. Hell, that may as well be true.
krellin (80 DX)
26 Aug 13 UTC
Restated: It is OK to have a short-term job on your resume IF you have moved locations. You answer the question like this:

"I didn't know I was going to have to move - but my fiance had a job offer that she could not refuse, and I knew that I was good enough that I could get a new job in my field once we relocated. That is why I have a short-term job on my resume from another geographical region..."

Beyond that....not to be a dick...but fiances sometimes become ex-girlfriends....hate to say it...so take the job!
2ndWhiteLine (2606 D(B))
26 Aug 13 UTC
I guess I can't make the assumption that I'll get the job, but I figure I have a more than decent chance since I already work in the same building - I work at a public library, this is a job in a different department. And the moving next summer is about as set in stone as a thing like that can get. But I definitely agree with everyone's advice, thanks for reinforcing my confirmation bias.

Otherwise a decision would have already been made.

Lmao, duh.

Ben Affleck as Batman
It just breaks my Comicbook loving heart. I just can't see Affleck being a good Batman. Oh and the kicker is he's going to help write the movie (the Superman/Batman one) and is signed for multiple movies.

How I would save the US if I would rule the country.
1. kill Sbyvl.
2. kill Emac.
3. disband the forces sent to places no one wants them. That'd be pretty much anywhere except maybe South Korea and in America and surrounding seas of course.

Daily Quote (Does Anyone like this Idea?)
So I am kind of new to the forums in that I have never posted anything and mostly just read what everyone is saying when it interests me. Since I saw there was a daily bible reading I figured I could start up a daily quote.

If someone is already doing this let me know as I don't want to steal their idea.
