I know it's a few days late, but I thought it'd be nice to have a thread to appreciate a great baseball player's remarkable achievement, even if he is a Yankee now. Ichiro is awesome.

The Astros Are the Best Team in Baseball
Let's take a look at the numbers, shall we sabermetricians?

"Obi I forgot to respond and it's probably better to not good too sidetracked, but: I don't agree that the two Roosevelts, especially Teddy, were anything like the Founders, but I do agree that we've been decidedly poor in our selection of executive leadership in certainly the second half of the twentieth century (to say nothing of the abominable record of the twenty-first century presidents)."

I like Kennedy...I don't like Reagan, but many Conservatives do.
LBJ was by no means a great President, but we got a few good things...
Nixon = Pete Rose--a jerk, but he might have been an all-time great if not for one thing...
Carter...ah, Putin33, where are you so you can tell us how he was the best ever... :p
Reagan I mentioned...
George H.W. Bush's legacy is looking a little better now...
Clinton's the same...I used to kick him around, now I YEARN for Bill back (and Hillary's gonna ride that all the way back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue of Chris Christie and/or Marco Rubio doesn't stop her.)

None of them I'd put on par with:

Washington/Jefferson/Madison/Lincoln/Teddy/FDR/Kennedy/Reagan*

*Again, *I* don't like hum, but conservatives like him and dislike Kennedy, so both get included for peace's sake.

As for the 21st century--give us a break, we've only had four elections so far! :p

Bush vs. Gore...not exactly an awesome choice...
Bush vs. Kerry...an even worse choice...
Obama vs. McCain...probably "the pick of a bad lot"...
Obama vs. Romney...yeah...that was...just...no...

@obi - "In one respect or another, I'd argue just about every modern government has pulled a fast one here or there on the people.

Don't like it?

DON'T VOTE THEM IN."

You really should re-read your posts sometimes. You appear to be saying that every govt lies to the people who vote them in and if we don't like that fact we shouldn't vote them in. What, pray tell, is the alternative?

^voting in a different set f liars. :-D
@ckroberts - I guess I'm un-American then. But guess who is more un-American. Abraham Lincoln. He broke more of the Constitution than any President since. Since I happen to love Abraham Lincoln and believe he is the greatest American President, I call your claim false.
Maniac (189 D(B))

Draugnar - I respect your view and particularly like your analogy about the drunk driver on a deserted highway, it's still illegal because it has the potential to cause harm, the actual harm caused is irrelevant to some degree. Indeed attempted murder or conspiracy to commit a fraud or preparations for for terrorism are offence which may have no harmfully effects but are serious crimes none the less.

Extending your analogy about the drunk driver in the legal context suppose that driver had to get from A to B. under what circumstances would he legally be able to drive? I'm thinking here about the duress defence where defendants in some jurisdictions are excused their actions if they justifiably feel their is a real danger to himself or other people he is protecting. Note that the danger doesn't have to be real, only for the defendant to perceive it as real. For example a driver being chased on foot by people jumps into his car and speeds away because he thought chasing gang was going to harm him. It could be that chasing people were trying to catch the guy to return his wallet he had dropped in the street, no matter the duress defence still applies.

Do you think the law which allows a law to be broken in circumstances where the perp is protecting people is a good law? Does it matter if its a good law or a bad law? If its the law, then it's the law, right?

abgemacht: "Since Manning couldn't have read a majority of the documents he leaked, I don't see how it can be said it wasn't, to some extent at least, random."

That's a bit more toned down. Do we agree on everything, in the end?

I must say that when the elections of 2008 were happening I was for Obama like everyone I knew (I'm not American but it definitely gets mentioned in the media here :P), because all we heard is how Obama wanted to help everyone with subsidies and what-not, and how Romney wanted to give less subsidies to the ones who needed them. So I can confirm that the media definitely practically have more votes than 1 each. No one is completely unbiased and they always sell their stuff as the truth in a subtil, not forcing but brainwashing way.

steephie22: The question was not between Obama and McCain. That choice was easy. Nor was it between Obama and Hillary Clinton, as the two were virtually identical. The question, to me at least, was why no progressive candidate made the Democratic ticket.
not that it matters but lincoln is overrated and kennedy was a grade A shit.

Maniac - I did answer this on my phone once but the PoS phoneust have done one of it's lockups.

To some degree a perceives threat is a valid defense but only if a sober and sane person would have had the same perception. So no, the drunk driver killing a kid because he thouht he was in danger and drove is not defendable. Andbyes this actually exists in law. My wife got unemployment aome years back because the workplace was made intolerable by certain people so she quit. Unemployment made the judgement after investigating that "any reasonable person" would have done the same thing. It is a good legal standard for judging self defense actions and one that should be adopted with the law. What I disagree with are stand your ground laws. If you are not in your own home or on your own property and see a chance to extricate yourself, you should be obligated to take it. I also don't like Texas' law that allows you to shoot someone breaking into a neighbor's home when the neighbor is out.

So how do people get chosen within parties? If there's a simple vote the opposite side could just join the party and choose a morron who will never become president to support their own side.
@Socrates - I'll give you Kennedy, but Lincoln single-handily held the country together.

goldfinger0303: A useless achievement that single-handedly cost well over one million deaths.

I missed this earlier and I don't feel like it will change anyone's minds about anything, but, @goldfinger: I disagree that Lincoln violated the Constitution as much as Obama/Bush have, either in letter or spirit. If he did, which again I do not concede, doing so to win a civil war is much different than what they're doing now (extending government power by playing up fears of a very minor (though still real) danger).

How local should minimum wage be? I just read something about minimum wage in Holland, but the costs of living in Amsterdam are certainly higher than on the countryside no?

It's good to be back!
Hey everyone! Not sure if anyone remembers me, I wasn't an especially vocal member, but after an eight month sabbatical, I'm looking to get started back up in diplomacy. Would anyone be interested in a 2-day phase game, probably a 100 point buy-in? If so, post in this thread, and I'll send you a PM with a password on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ben Affleck as Batman
It just breaks my Comicbook loving heart. I just can't see Affleck being a good Batman. Oh and the kicker is he's going to help write the movie (the Superman/Batman one) and is signed for multiple movies.

2. kill Emac.
3. disband the forces sent to places no one wants them. That'd be pretty much anywhere except maybe South Korea and in America and surrounding seas of course.

Daily Quote (Does Anyone like this Idea?)
So I am kind of new to the forums in that I have never posted anything and mostly just read what everyone is saying when it interests me. Since I saw there was a daily bible reading I figured I could start up a daily quote.

If someone is already doing this let me know as I don't want to steal their idea.
