"clear communication in a non-communication game"
Ah. That's the issue, Kapazunda -- you seem to have an incomplete idea of what Gunboat entails. There is no text messaging allowed in gunboat games, in- or out-of-game. What *is* allowed, and indeed what the games rely heavily on, are non-verbal communications. If I have an army in North Africa, for example*, and you have a fleet in the Ionian Sea, I might issue a support-move from Ionian to Tunis. If you happen to move to Tunis (and who wouldn't? Tunis is lovely this time of year!), then you'll see that I supported you there, which you could interpret as me giving you permission and welcome to the lovely shores of Africa. Even if you don't move there, in fact, you can look at the large-version of the map or at the Orders page and see that I invited you to Tunis, and perhaps you'll move there next turn. Being able to read and guess at these non-verbal hints is core to the game, and is something which players usually gain through experience with gunboat-style games.
*This example is chosen specifically because it is *not* currently possible in the game being discussed. Hence, this should in NO WAY be interpreted as communication about the ongoing game.
