I think the time has come for a webdip app. Honestly, this is my favorite website, and it would make it a lot easier for many people to have this site as an app. Preferably compatible for both Apple and Android

what screen resolutions should i target? how big should my images and embedded videos be? and internet explorer seems to be a pile of garbage and the only browser that doesnt seem to work whenever i add a new feature (latest issue - its not resizing images correctly). should that matter?

also if anyone actually saw my website (apparently one or two did), did the text seem too big, or reasonable. i didnt adjust the font size at all, but i think lucida or whatever font i chose as default tends to look huge for some reason.

and on the topic of this website, there seems to be a subtle bug, i tried muting zultar but his profile page lacks the mute button. im sure its a simple fix but a much needed one. and dont give me that as-expected nonsense.

My understanding was that you already had a website, the one with the oddly placed comment boxes.

Additionally, that is not a bug, moderators cannot be muted. For instance, if you had not read Zultar's warning you would probably be silenced by now for making new threads. From a logical standpoint, the moderators are supposed to read everyone's comments, if we have to read what you post then the reverse seems fair.

you are all useless! but coincidentally when i came to check the comments here the site was down so in the meantime i decided i would set the images to about 300 pixels wide so it fits on a portrait iphone. making any comments you would have made extranious (is that how you spell that?).

anyway my website is awesome. but what is up with google analytics? i tried using it, but i saw postings from a few people on there and yet analytics showed no visitors at all. so i just took analytics off. what a piece of garbage. and my youtube videos only have about 20 views each? nonsense! i think google has a conspiracy going against me. assholes.

although i am dissappointed with the comments from the users of this site. "testing" and "you really suck at making websites" (paraphrasing). whatever i dont need you guys, i have at least one friend who can visit my website.

all that said, i still want people to insult the site, but with a specific problem rather than "this sucks" because... ok, we can all agree that it sucks, but what would make it better?

i may consider fiving someone a +1 if they think of a real problem with it a specific problem. actually somebody told me it lacks structure and suggested using a cms. i forget who, but i guess if i could find where that suggestion was i could give a +1 there. something specific to my site, then sure. ok go.

Why don't you use something like WORDPRESS. It's free to use if you want a wordpress blog. Alternately, you can buy the ability to make it a yourname.com site.

*VERY* easy to customize.

Highly recommend this solution.

@blank

You do not have anything to say worthy of your own website. I say that not to be mean; rather, I'm concerned your teenage feelings will be hurt if you spend time making a website that no one visits.

With that being said, I'd recommend Wordpress or googlesites if you just want to post, or a standard phpBB Forum if you want to have conversations.

as much of an ass as you are being i did say i would give a +1 to legit suggestions. and i guess with the three suggestions there maybe it is good enough.

it is true, nobody cares about my site... but who knows, it is only a couple weeks old, maybe. i honestly forget when i embarked on this project. but i am not a programming or design master, it takes time to build something that people will visit.

Also, if you want people to visit your site, you're much better off registering your own domain name. People hate going to sites.idontpayforarealsite/blank'ssite.org. You'll have a much better time (assuming your content magically improves) going with something like blankflag.net.

Also also, the best way to advertise is not through other forums, where you'll just piss people off. Use social networking. Create a twitter account and a facebook page. That's how people will find you.

Why is everyone crapping on Blankflag's idea to make a website? If you want to make a website, do it. It's really good practice if you decide to make a career out of it. How knowledgeable with coding are you? What languages do you know? Figure out if you're capable of making a complete website first and foremost. You can have the greatest website idea ever, but without the ability to make it happen, it's useless.

What? Blankflag's website is down?

I have to admit I did sneak a peak, and aside from some unexpected pictures of men having their privates inspected by security guards (I daren't ask why) it seemed to be a rather fun collection of blank's rantings. All it really needed was a slighty more logical order to it... and perhaps a few less penis inspections.

In all seriousness, keep on at it blankie. Although a bit less on at it over here would be appreciated ;)

blankflag (0 DX)

catastrophe. my website was down? did you verify the address was correct? i suppose that is what i get for the zero dollars i am paying in hosting fees. what message did it give you, if any?

this sucks because i did not make any changes between then and now so it must have been an issue with the server.

i dont know many languages, but i figured the most likely server-side scripting capability that would be free might be php, so i searched for free php host and found one. that was a while back, but then recently i got into making an actual site...

anyway i dont particularly like php but i am a really cheap bastard and free is free.

ipv6 - seriously?

example ipv4
123.45.67.89

example ipv6
2607:f0d0:1002:0051:0000:0000:0000:0004

is this some kind of joke? this is 4 times the bitlength.
its like saying "oh sorry we are running out of 7 digit phone numbers,
so we have a new system and phone numbers will now be 28 digits long."

10^38 addresses, wtf? are these people retarded? do they know how many that is? are they planning for every person to have 10^28 addresses? one for each tenth of a gram the earth weighs?

maybe they didnt want people connecting to servers outside of the dns and hope having to type in 32 hex characters will avoid that. people who may have already been burned by having to type in software license keys but even those are less than 32 characters i think.

the retardedness of central planning strikes again.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
08 Apr 13 UTC
I'm not even going to bother explaining why the change was necessary or the benefits because I'm pretty sure you don't care. On the off chance you actually do go google the benefits if ipv6 or take a basic level networking class.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Apr 13 UTC
Ignoring everything else, transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 is a huge pain. Might as well do your best to make sure we never have to transition again. It's not like it's actually harder to type out an IPv6 address and even if it was, it wouldn't matter because almost no one has to do it.
blankflag (0 DX)
08 Apr 13 UTC
we should not transition again. but dont you think we are approaching the limits of our need for unique device addresses?

if all the undeveloped world becomes like us that will only add a factor of 2 or 3 to the address need. what could the population of earth be, in the next 100 years? 10^10? and how many devices could we possibly have per person? 100? 1000? in my wildest dreams i can only imagine a need for 10^15 not 10^36.

making a website is a pain. with storing these new ip addresses and hash functions and all this nonsense.

can i still use my trusty adler32 hash to store ip addresses? since the number of addresses is kind of unchanging, and just the representation changes, i assume the chance of collision should be the same.
blankflag (0 DX)
08 Apr 13 UTC
speaking of my awesome website, is there any real savings on server load if i have some files on the server .html instead of .php? that way the php interpreter never has to touch it? or is that overhead negligible?

for archived content the only use of php seems to track user visits, and i dont really care that much about that.

or show someones username or some other personalized content. but i dont see the need for that and it could probably be done in javascript anyway.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Apr 13 UTC
@blankmind - Blocks of IP addresses are reserved for specific uses. For instance, 10.* and 192.168.* are always internal addresses within a firewall. Likewise 128.0.0.1 is your local machine and the 128.0.0.* is reserved for various local processes.

Consdiering that the only people who ever type IPV4 or IPV6 are the ones setting up DNS entries or testing on unregistered systems before deployment, it makes no difference to the average user.
blankflag (0 DX)

ok new question lets say i have posts that contain links at the end and other threads that have no links. there are 3 options,
1. have one table for posts and have a "type" column and links column that can be null
2. have two tables one with a links column, one without
3. have 2-3 tables, but one table is "links" which contains a column for post ids, a column for one link (so each post can have zero or one or more entries in this table, and everytime you render a post with links you have to do a join to this table)

now 3 would be useful for having a page listing all links used in the site, or which website is most linked to or other stuff like that, but how much less efficient will it be at rendering posts, does anybody know?
blankflag (0 DX)
08 Apr 13 UTC
ok what about this idea
one table with all the posts "cached" that is, the posts rendered as html
and then a bunch of other tables with the links or everything else.
then for typical rendering, just go to the cache table.

uses at least double the space, but could use less time, maybe.
is this a reasonable idea?

A few quick thoughts:

- The all caps is too hard to read
- Go to 2 columns instead of 4 so the titles won't wrap and it will be more readable.
- What is "Type News"?
- Is there a reason to show the post #?
- Do something to differentiate and separate the nav from the rest of the page (check out the <hr> tag)
- The comment box thing -- it isn't clear what it's for or where the content is going

That's enough for now.
blankflag (0 DX)
10 Apr 13 UTC
ok the post numbers were originally so that you could write a post and quote another one inside yours using the post id. and then the website could somehow do the quoting.

type news is because there are categories, news, opinion, media, data... article... or something.

basically with the titles i have (i still havent heard opinions as to whether this makes the website more efficient or less, but maybe people dont know) i have in the database every post has a field with html already made, and then when the page renders it just takes that html without changing it.

so that html has all the info someone might need in there. and i figured somewhere someone might want that info, so i put it in the html.

actually my idea is to let the person customize the display a little bit and have that done with javascript.

the layout used to use javascript to fix it a bit, but then without javascript it wasnt the best.

i dont know, another problem is i want it to render on cellphones too. so i tried to make a layout that could scale based on the browser window size.

In all seriousness it's not an incredibly bad website, at least compared to a lot of the home made trash on the web. I think everyone's point is that you don't want to look like one of the guys who builds a homemade website so he can post all of his crazy theories on why the 9/11 attacks we a conspiracy between frito lay and the illuminati. And right now your site colors make me feel like that's what I'm going to read next.

Black text on a white background until you learn how to go beyond that and make it look nice. You don't need to reinvent the wheel if you want people to read what you're writing. Only your grandmother will give you compliments for something that's "clever." The rest of us want good UI.

I disagree with Abge. A ridiculous domain name is fine since everybody who gets to his website will do so using a link. Once you have something you'd be willing to show your prospective girlfriend (if you're gay please don't admit it, I like to believe gay men know how to use color correctly {and if your female, well, Celtic now has a friend to play with}), then you can get a domain name for your site.
datapolitical (100 D)

I meant to say a ridiculous URL.

Also, webdip forums are the place for posting about the illuminati.
