WebDiplomacy will close temporarily in one month
Details inside

We are saddened to announce this news, but our site will be closed by the end of the month. The reason for this is there has been official complaints and threat of legal actions about the level of freedom of speech on the site (name callings, epithets, insensitive subjects, and so forth). Kestas and the mod team have agreed that it is best to close the site for now and rework the terms of agreement when joining the site. We hope to open the site again as soon as we can; look for us to reopen some time in august. When the site reopens, the mods will have a much stronger role to play in moderating the forum. Kestas is very upset with this news, but he might very well comment on this thread and verify our announcement. We know that this is not something that any of us expected, but we are going to do what is best for the future of the site.

Sincerely,

The moderators and Kestas

What would have been funnier would have been asking people to pay $5 for the use of the site ......... it would have caused a storm of complaints.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Apr 13 UTC
Except it is well known the site is now funded for at least a full year. N00bs who hadn't been around when we had the big fund raiser that converted us to the dedicated server might not know that but the rest of us do.

I might have believed it if it was written by jmo.
NoPantsJim (100 D)

In response to the notion of paying $5 for use of the site, how is this site funded anyway, donations?
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Apr 13 UTC
Yes. See those gold and silver (and sometimes copper/bronze) coins next to names? Those are site donors. Bronze/Copper, Silver and Gold indicate roughly how much over time. They are in order of preciousness of the metal involved (Gold is highest donor level, silve beneath it), but how much has never been revealed as Kestas doesn't want people donating just to get a specific coin by their name.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

Which is a little annoying. I want to know how much for a gold icon!
Alderian (2425 D(S))
01 Apr 13 UTC
Well Gunfighter06, you should be able to figure it out fairly easily. Just give $50 a month until you get a gold icon and then you'll know.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Apr 13 UTC
Or go $25 a month for twice as long and a more accurate accounting.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
01 Apr 13 UTC
My annoyance aside, I can understand kestas' rationale for keeping the numbers private.

But how do exchange rates work? This is an international site.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
01 Apr 13 UTC
When I did it a year or two ago I think the Aussie dollar was worth more than the U.S. dollar. Paypal takes care of the currency conversion. I'm assuming they didn't screw me on the exchange rate.

Visa and MasterCard used to have a "hidden" 1% fee on currency conversion when an international transaction required it. They got sued and lost. So now they just charge a 0.8% - 1% fee to the financial institution and it is up to the financial institution to decide whether to pass it on (and disclose it) to the card holder or not. And it is on all international transactions, not just the ones requiring currency conversion. So Visa and MasterCard are pretty happy with the results I'd imagine.

Mods: How hard was it to put up the banner ads? Just making sure you guys didn't go to too much work just for April Fools' Day.
yebellz (729 D(G))
02 Apr 13 UTC
The mod team didn't have anything to do with the banner "ads". Kestas did those himself since it requires an actual code change. It's probably fairly simply, just need to write some code to randomly insert a bit of html to display randomly chosen images.

Happy April Fools, everyone. Just in case it was not already clear, the message about the site closing was merely a joke.

I was gonna say, since AdBlock didn't stop them.

gold standard scam?
who here thinks that the gold standard is a scam by the elites to focus their opposition on an issue that benefits them? they hold all the wealth, they can control the world gold supply and they can get even richer if there is a gold standard. it did give them the excuse for fdr to steal the gold of america to give to the elites of his day.

If email notifications for games won't work, what about RSS?
It'd be nice to just subscribe to NoPantsJim.rss and get a feed for any game I'm involved with, assuming the server load from this isn't as bad as it apparently is for email.

Global message removal
I'm playing in http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=113480 (world wide gunboat!-28) and I can't figure out how to get rid of the opening global message. I click/double click on the unread message icon w/ no result. I go to the message archive and back. Anybody know of a way to remove it so I don't constantly see the reminder at the top of the screen? Thanks.

Why do zombies never use guns?
I understand they don't have weapons with them when they become undead, but surely they can pick up a gun from someone they just killed... That would make them much stronger, right?

Western Liberalism and Nature
Here is an interesting paper on the difficulty western liberalism (not in the modern American sense) has in confronting issues that necessarily entail ethics, such as bioengineering. Discuss.
