Since this is already essentially an EOG, I'll post a brief bit here. I don't like Russia in gunboat games -- The choice of north vs. south is much more interesting when you've got negotiations to make, I think. Regardless, I thought I'd head south strongly, and hope that either Turkey or Austria made some overtures. I thought I'd risk guaranteeing Rumania at the expense of giving up control of the Black Sea, and when Turkey executed his (to me) very odd move in Fall 01, I knew I'd made the right call. That couldn't have been any clearer a sign that he wanted to work together, so I decided to roll with it.
Just as well, too -- I knew the English builds were headed my way, but I wasn't ready for the German push, and it cost me Warsaw (which I was able to soften by taking Budapest). By 1903, though, England and Germany were squabbling over Scandinavia and I was able to reclaim Warsaw and solidify my game-long alliance with Turkey.
In 1904, I was saved by a greedy France, who managed to attack three neighbors at once. The attacks weakened Italy enough that I could get Turkey another SC, and distracted Germany enough that I could catch my breath in the north and use 1905 to regroup. 1906 was a banner year for me -- I threw my full weight against a crumbling German front, and managed to steal Berlin *and* Munich, which I'd hold for the rest of the game. At this point, Austria was out, England had CDed, Italy was on life support, and I was looking forward to a four-way draw and a relatively quick game.
1907 changed all that. France NMRs in the Spring, and so I decide not to put in for the Draw, waiting til he CDs in the Fall. Then, in the fall, France CDs but Turkey NMRs (which he did 3 or 4 times during the game). So I decide to wait til Turkey CDs, *then* draw. Except by then, Spicy had put up this post. By the time the next turn rolls around, England *and* France *and* Turkey are all awake at the helm again. Well, damned if I'm going to let someone jump into England's burning ship and walk away with an equal share of the pot! Game on, I thought.
Then the game dragged. And dragged. And dragged. I got stuck in the rut trying to cross into France, while Turkey steadily ate up territory and Germany sat like a rock. I started having fun, trying to see how many turns in a row I could order the same failed move (trying to break into St.Pete's). Eventually, I realize that far from dying, England started thriving, chasing others around his island snatching up SCs. That, combined with the late hour, started wearing on me. Finally, England had a solid naval blockade, I was tired, and it was clear Turkey wasn't going to draw, so I stabbed him to force it.
