We've got enough problems in the UK at the moment, the last thing we need is a Mormon knocking at the door ... ok, it's OK, their Jehovahs witnesses, see I told you he was guilty !!

Chat During Retreats and Builds
This isn't allowed in the real board game, so why is it allowed here? I have heard this thought from other players too. Could it possibly be coded by treating these parts of the game as a gunboat?

Need replacement for France to get on board for a draw. Very solid position. Potentially need a replacement for Turkey too as he has also CD'd in an odd fashion but has not yet left the game

Diplomacy Puzzles
This thread will consist of Diplomacy puzzles. You will be given a situation in a gunboat game and have to figure out how someone can win the game. It's basically like the chess puzzles in the newspaper except it's Diplomacy.

Islam in the UK vs. Islam in the US?
Old article, but still, since I learned that Islam was as prevalent in the UK as it was (or seems to be, perhaps it isn't that prevalent?) I've found that fact a bit odd...why is it growing in the UK? Especially among WOMEN--according to the article, 66% of converts are women...in a religion that's certainly portrayed as being perhaps more culturally restrictive towards women, why is that? And the UK vs. the US--what difference is there in attitudes towards Islam, if any?

Turkish Gunboat Strategy
I mean, Turkey is a pretty good country to play for in a gunboat, but it soon becomes hard for Turkey to cycle armies to distant fronts because their home SC's are so far from the battle. Any suggestions?

Old Games
I was recently looking through the first WebDiplomacy games (gameID=100, gameID=7000, gameID=3 {which was won by Kestas}). What seems to puzzle me is that a the pot in these games is always less than what the players win (in gameID=7000, the winner bets 10 and magically wins 420). Is there an explanation to this?

EOG classic!
The most awful game ever. 3CDs in first year. Germany/Turkey/Russia. I was not able to react to CDs in S01 but I have to stop Austria from taking all the share and decided to delay Austria. But guess what happens next, very wise France decided to backdoor me. I'm shocked that i survived until the draw while i dont understand why you guys would draw at all.

Trouble forcing players to draw in games
I just played a live gunboat where two other players and I reached a stalemate line against the 4th player. We effectively secured the line for 6 years and had all voted to draw, but the 4th player drew out the game until I accidentally misordered, costing us the draw. gameID=95811

North Korea snubbed at Olympics
At the intros to today's women's soccer game between North Korea and Colombia, the stadium screen showed the South Korean flag next to the images for North Korean player intros. The team walked off the field and somehow the Olympic people talked them into coming back out and playing, but I can't believe this was a mistake.

"What Do You Play, My Lord?" "Worms, Worms, Worms..." (Download?)
I don't play video games that much any more--when I do, it's mostly ROMS of old NES games--but I LOVE playing the Worms series, mostly Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party...I used to have a version downloaded and workable on my computer, but not now...
Anyone know a SAFE site where I can download the game/an emulator of it? Anyone else play Worms, and enjoy the strategic insanity? ;)

Lobbying in Washington
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18996319

To me this seems to take power away from people. The people who spoke out against SOPA/PIPA... Sure the internet industry now rivals the entertainment industry for weight and lobby space, but is this democratic?

How does one provide the PERFECT support in a ANON game?
How is that possible, especially when the one providing support to a move is in the line of fire?
MichiganMan (5121 D)
26 Jul 12 UTC
Do you mean in a GB game, or an Anon press game. In the latter there is no question, but in the former, it is a bit suspicious.
whaskell (90 D)

GB.
whaskell (90 D)

ANON
Support hold when your "friend" has two enemy units facing against his one and you can help. Support move, although this is not guaranteed to work, when there's one enemy unit facing off against him and you happen to have a unit also facing the enemy (e.g: friend in Serbia, enemy in Rumania, you in Bulgaria).

Is that what your asking?
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Experience, Educated Guess, Luck, Roll of the Dice, Cheating, One or the other did the same move on the last turn so the other matched up this time. Or some combination there of.
whaskell (90 D)
26 Jul 12 UTC
No sorry if I wasn't clear. It was a supporting move.

Italy supported a move from France in 1904 spring. Pie - Tyr.
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
26 Jul 12 UTC
If France was clearly attacking Germany and moved to Piedmont, a fairly good player would likely recognize that the move to Piedmont had the intention of going to Tyrolia, and the support would accomplish the twofold task of showing good faith towards the move while also getting the army out of your backdoor.
seth24c (5659 D)

That's ridiculous.

seth24c (5659 D)
26 Jul 12 UTC
yes of course.
A correct friendly support in a gunboat is not suspicious by default. It only looks that way if you're not a good guesser.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
26 Jul 12 UTC
It's not at all hard to figure out what game whaskell is referring to. A quick search of ongoing live games reveals this: gameID=95757

The move in question is S1903 and it doesn't look suspicious at all.

-1 whaskell for clearly discussing an ongoing game...won't go as far as to say it was a cheating accusation though.

TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)

If the 1903 support by Italy is what you are referring to, it is not suspicious at all.

Nah, I'm kidding you. Asking questions is always good. Discuss. Discuss.
Spicy (550 D)

It takes situational awareness, and the ability to read into other player's moves. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. From my experience playing with you, you are not good at either of these. I would suggest you first learn to start playing for draws when the other players make it blatantly obvious they are trying to stop a solo
Spicy (550 D)
26 Jul 12 UTC
Start asking yourself what people's moves are implying. This will improve your game drastically
Alderian (2425 D(S))
26 Jul 12 UTC
I take it back, the move you questioned, now that it has been revealed, is a pretty friggen obvious move. No luck, educated guess, or experience necessary. Really.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
26 Jul 12 UTC
If the discussion was about specific moves in an ongoing game, rather than generally asking about possible supports anywere in thegame; then i don't think it unduely influences that game.

It is not like he suggested being supported into munich and hoped that some other player in the game would see the request here.

On the other hand, i predict moves all the time. Nothinh suspect about it, in my only current game i supported france to marseilles with piedmont. Nobody told me to, and nobody suspects that i cheated... (it may not even have been a good move, we'll see)

If Russia has a fleet in the Black Sea and builds a new fleet in Sevastopol is that considered anti-Turkish or anti-Austria Hungarian?

I'll take my answer of the air.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
26 Jul 12 UTC
@ora, I disagree. The moment he brought up the specific move, only lying about the year by 1 to poorly disguise it, he was causing an affect on the game. Other players in the game reading the post might read it and be worried about the cheating implied but not stated and change how they treat the two countries.

In this game, why did England CD, helping France to win? Did that person see this post and decide there must be cheating so why waste time on the game and quit? Or did they just quit for some other reason. Did Turkey stupidly consume French and Austrian centers because he might as well have fun in a game that is screwed? Or were they just a new player that didn't know what they were doing, which based on their profile is the case.

In this case I would bet that it didn't have an effect. But it could which is why it shouldn't be brought up. IMHO the original poster was fine with this post until he specified a specific order allowing the game to be identified.
yebellz (729 D(G))

1) Do not post cheating accusations on the forum. Even if you think it is obvious or "provable", you could very well be wrong and unfairly affect games/players far worse than any imagined cheating.
The appropriate channel to have cheating concerns investigated and addressed is to contact the moderators. See the rules page for contact info:
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/rules.php

2) Do not discuss ongoing games. This especially undermines gunboat games.
