Another good diplomacy website is vdiplomacy.com. Same thing as this but with a lot more maps. I mean A LOT more maps.

Okay, checked it out. It doesn't even have the basic diplomacy map and it's got adds all over it. I'll pass.

I think vdip is a companion site that is more about variants. It looks identical to webdip otherwise.

Vdip is indeed a sister site to this one. However, it's run independently with variants and some other features being added pretty much as the community wants them. The major downside is that it doesn't have the quality of play found here. Also, a lot of the variants are imbalanced, but you can just avoid that if you want to. The main argument about why vdip is inferior is because of the lack of high quality play. Also, lots of the high-quality players don't like variants that much. But, I don't see why that should stop us from implementing more variants here. You don't have to play them if you don't want to.

The only Diplomacy, in my opinion, is the classic map with full press. Outside that, the variants dont have a good zone setup and most or all zones border like ten million other zones and dont have areas that you can really protect yourself from, it seems very little thought went into its creation, zone sizes, center locations, and the like, has a lack of adequate testing before its release and has a general "cheap" feel. Its more of a raw free-for-all. Variants suck, plain and simple.

However, some variants can be fun, once tested enough. I think the Ancient Med variant is fairly balanced

What else those other sites don't have:
annoying new players with 20% resign rates posting how much better other sites are.

Also if anyone's on Android tablets or phones - get the App Droiddippy. Its just diplomacy. :)

The ancient Med map is fairly balanced as long as you wont get Greece. And the border between Persia and Egypt is stalemated way to easy, especially from the Persian side.

@ Tru Ninja, from what i understand about the creation of Diplomacy, it took between 10 of 15 years to create the balance of the classic map. So if people would devote attention to the other variants, they could be better.

But i do like variants, and i would like to see some more of them on this site.

@Tru Ninja, @Fortress Door, I have to agree, Ancient is pretty well balanced I think, there are many stalemate lines, easily protectable territories, just people know them less well, since we play less on that map.

I"ve been playing a lot on vdip lately and I do have to say the quality there is far less than what I am used to here. However, just as on this site, the way to solve that is to do invite-only matches. So far the one I've started has been pretty good and has a bunch of players that are int he top 100 GR here on webdip. There are good players on vdip, you just gotta try a little harder to find them

On the variants issue though, I agree. More testing needs to be done to correctly balance the maps. However, some of the variants (such as Classic - Fog of War) are very balanced. Others are made imbalanced on purpose (rinacimento of 15th century Italy) and that has to be taken into account. But I think with some minor tweaks and touch-ups, almost every map on that site can become about as balanced as the classic map.

In my opinion the only real diplomacy game is the classic one, perfect, the most interesting and core of the diplomacy game. Variants add flavor to diplomacy and they are of great value too. Greek diplomacy, Imperial diplomacy, Sengoku, Colonial, Rinascimento are not balanced but are in every way worth of play. Great fun.

@TheCzech: what was goon dip like? never got to see that site, but i have heard a little about it

Well, it was the second to have variants, taking over the variant code from the korean site. The big features I remember are the wide screen mode and the instant chat. Wide screen was nice because you'd have the chat and order sections on the left and the map on the right. Instant chat was great too, but would have been to server intensive for a large site the way it was implemented.
