A plea for sanity. I can think of a few people here who could benefit from reading this. I sure know I will.

Diplomacy on the web
I have been at WebDip for a few months now, and I think I've got a pretty good idea of the flavor of the site and its regular users. How does it compare to the rest of internet diplomacy?

Daily Bible Reading--John 1
This thread isn't meant to provoke argument, but if it does, that's ok. It's just a place to come for a one-chapter dose of the Bible. Today's reading is the first chapter of John's story of the good news as he personally experienced it, translated into modern English.

Did something change with how muting works?
Used to be, you could briefly see (and hit ESC to fully read) muted posts/people. Now, I can hit ESC before the javascript executes, but I still don't see posts form people I muted. Did the code shift to muting server side? If so, cool, but also "bummer" as I'll have to unmute people to see their bullshit (and them me if they have me muted).

Please stop being hypocritical
We ask Mujus to create a single thread for his quotes and he has done that. Please be considerate and do the same. If he wants to discuss the bible every day and there are people who want to do the same, please let them. Stop making a mockery out of their freedom of speech.

I'm just saying, the source of this frustration on webdiplomacy forums in particular is that those who don't want to see it, still have to. If this were not so, the problem would not be so hostile

"If there were a way to hide threads or mute threads this wouldn't be a problem. The atheists/non-Christians could just ignore the Christian thread..."

When it's my philosophy threads ragging on God, it's then declared "unfair" that we say so WITHOUT The Christians present to give their own--albeit losing--arguments.

When it's a Christian thread supporting God, it's then declared "unfair" that atheists come and give their two cents just as the Christians did on the anti-God threads.

When it's an infidel, it's punishment and a sign you should change your ways...

When it's a Christian, it's persecution and it's mean mean mean mean MEAN and it has to stop!

Christianity!

Holding a double-standard since claiming to be a philosophy of love and allowing for rape, conquest, and slavery in the name of God!

Why does this forum exist? I reckon it is so that people who enjoy Diplomacy can discuss matters relating to Diplomacy. Perhaps it is also helpful for members to get to know one another. But If I want to use the forum, and I have to wade through countless threads on religion (or kayaking), which do not promote the purpose of the forum, then I'm being spammed.

I enjoy kayaking, and I want others also to experience the pleasure which kayaking has given me. But if I incessantly post threads on this forum about kayaking, then people will recognise me as an idiot and a spammer, and my behaviour will reflect badly on other kayakers.

There are enough kayaking sites, and also enough religious sites.

So Mujus, do you see how your behaviour reflects badly on yourself and other Christians?

We discuss a lot more than Diplomacy here. Economics, politics, philosophy, history and science are all discussed. Why not religion? Just don't overdo the new threads (show common sense)

I think this is one of the best meta- or self-moderation threads we've had.

1) yes the internet is real life
2) yes this tool does change how we behave
3) yes it does make people feel free to mock openly 'that which they consider worth mocking' as there are virtually no consequences.

Religious people may be offended; they are entitled to feel that way.
Self-moderation means taking responcibility for your own actions; if you offend and hurt people you are not considering their feelings - but the the barrier between you and them prevents those feelings from being acknowledged.

The tool which allows opinions to be freely shared has the potential to bring understanding - offense generated has the consequence of blinding the offended and offenders to any opposing point of view.

I think it is fairly unique that a whole segment of our community has been offended together. Only the topic of religion brings this out. NO amount of politics has the same effect - one socialist may offend one capitalist, but it is not seen as a Us versus THEM war; i think...

@Zultar - I'm a big fan of freedom of speech and if you or Mujus want to start a million threads then go for it, I will either mute them or go elsewhere. What seems odd to me is that you want to curtail how people respond to such topics. You seem to think that people should be polite and respectful. Whilst I hope I would always be polite and respectful, there is sometimes a necessity to be ompolite and disrespectful.

Let me give you an example that I hope won't offend.

If someone on here said that Moscow was the best SC to hold in diplomacy, they may be right but others would disagree. A long arguement based on reason, belief and evidence may follow and people may disagree. Now if it didn't matter to the other players what the original Moscow supporter thought then that would be that. But suppose those people were affected in someway, suppose other people started believing Moscow was soooo good that it affected their gameplay, the French would make a beeline for Moscow from the getgo, for example. Now the other players would want to use everything in their powers to dissuade the original Moscow cheerleader from his viewpoint. If that means ridiculing him to such an extent that he went away, then that would be OK.

Society has evolved quite quickly by driving people who hold racist, homophobic and sexist views underground, those people may still be racist, homophobic and sexist, but they do not expose their views to scrutity so much through fear of being labled, arrested or sacked. I think that people of faith will soon start being less vocal through fear of ridicule and to that extent the anti-religious people would have won the argument. The fewer people who state their racist, religious or homophobic views, the fewer followers they atttract, and the decline spirals down.

This will not affect the hardcore religious believers, of course, but it is often those that drive moderates away anyway.

This forum badly needs some top level categories, e.g. Game starts, Tournaments, EOGs, Rule queries, Strategy plus one for off-topic discussions. That way people can discuss what they like while avoiding the impossible-to-navigate structure we have at the moment.

Iberian bug?
Is there a bug in this game? the A1901 opening F MAO - SPAIN - SC with A SPAIN - POR has failed to work in 2 successive games.

There is a rule against swapping places I think, but that is not what these units are doing here.

Daily Secular Reading
Well, last time we did a poem by a tragic, mad, male genius, Mr. Poe...how about a tragic, mad, female genius, Emily Dickinson? (We'll do someone from the British Isles tomorrow, so don't worry, this thread isn't going to be a sad example of American Exceptionalism and shut out the rest of the English-speaking world.) So! A very short poem by Dickinson (and how prudent this one is, given these "Daily Bible Readings") and more talk of her inside...
