Springing Forward
Daylight Savings Time starts tonight for most of us in the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean island nations. This isn't the same date as for most other participating countries; consequently, this meant we all had to change our time zones manually when I last was on this site a few years ago.

Remember to Spring Forward if it applies to you, and remember to double-check your clocks on the webDiplomacy website after you do it.

Patton vs Lee
An interesting contest. Which General was better does the community think? Overall, for they both had their specifics where they would win.

My apologies to the players of "two?" gameID=82846
I'm writing to apologize to the players of game "two?" (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=82846) for abandoning the game. An emergency came up and I had to leave. I understand me leaving threw the game off balance for everyone and for that I am sorry. I hope I get a chance to play you guys again in the future.

Sincerely,
-nnfolz (Germany)

United Auto Workers bailed out by Obama
Why did Americans who don't work at General Motors, about 99.9% of the population, waste hundreds of billions bailing out GM? Obama's dependence on union money of course. Our reward
Production of the Chevy Volt halted and 1,300 jobs lost.

Random Person to Post Wins
We all know that the concept of "Last Person to Post Wins" is deeply flawed – it encourages excessive posting which is similar to bidding wars; only except of money, one constantly invests his free time to stay on top which favours the trolls the most, since they have no life and therefore plenty of free time. Random Person to Post Wins alleviates the situation of those who wish to win but can't bother trying. Enjoy.

Looking for a replacement England
England just left a surprisingly solid position in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=81140

It's Autumn retreats, so England will have two builds and a total of six units before there's any new action.

does anybody believe that negative vote counts on the machines are error and not fraud? also here is a video on how incredibly secure the machines are.

I have disgraceful stats.
Can I somehow reset them? They look bad.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Game stats:
Defeated: 53 ( 37% )
Won: 11 ( 8% )
Drawn: 34 ( 24% )
Survived: 44 ( 31% )
Resigned: 2 ( 1% )
Total (finished): 144
Playing: 5

Sample space too large. Too hard to reverse the stats.
That represents your skill. So, your as skillful as your stats say you are. Even if they reset; you'd be as skilled as before.

Even if they do look a *bit* bad, it's how skillful you are. I might lose some games, win some games, etc. but I would keep them no matter HOW BAD they are, because that's my skill.

IMO.

It might take a while, but you should be able to change them. They're not *terribly* bad, really... the only one that I would say is actually bad in any sense is the two resigns.

8% wins is a little above the average, IIRC.

Can't find any of the stats that were floating around this site but I think most countries sat around 6-7% wins. And, what? 40% wins? Kinda pulling numbers out of my ass now. Anybody got a link to the stats?
Fasces349 (0 DX)

Mine are ok:
Defeated: 7 ( 20% )
Won: 3 ( 9% )
Drawn: 12 ( 34% )
Survived: 12 ( 34% )
Resigned: 1 ( 3% )

However I stand by the fact that the resigned should have been a win, which I was at 16 scs in a live game before time constraints forced the resign.
Dizzy has a 79% win...
Worldbeing (1063 D)

See, I find stats a little odd, since there's been a definite shift in players' attitudes on this site since I played more regularly a few years back.

Back then, people seemed to play to the death a lot more; a draw would usually only happen when a stalemate or near stalemate had been reached, and very rarely by more than three players. My stats reflect this: 4% draws, 45% defeats, 38% survives, 13% wins.

Now, though, people seem much more willing to draw, and this is reflected in the stats; less outright defeats, many more draws. I'm not sure I like it, tbh, especially considering that the best part of Dip for me is once it's down to three or four countries fighting it out for 18 SCs.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

I'm concerned since I have been defeated or only managed to survive, a whopping 68% of the time.
The thing is I started playing in 2007. Back then I was a noob, and also PPSC was the only game type so survives netted points.
Along came WTA, and along came people who only played WTA throughout their game career here, and we're looking at people who draw 40% of their games and win another 10%.

By the way, the resigns were due to unfortunate situations with live games. I was trying them out and naturally forgot they started.

@Worldbeing: perhaps people play more WTA nowadays?
@Worldbeing, perhaps the games that were draws back then were something like this? gameID=60765

Mine are somewhat biased from the early days of this site when, for the sake of points, it was advantageous to bet everything until you were below 100 D and then join some hopeless CD country and lose as quickly as possible (at that point, your not-in-play points would then rise to 100 D, hopefully just before you completed another game!). Obviously my stats include quite a few deliberate losses for that reason, but here they are:
Defeated: 34 ( 40% )
Won: 14 ( 17% )
Drawn: 7 ( 8% )
Survived: 27 ( 32% )
Resigned: 2 ( 2% )
Total (finished): 84

My suspicion is that if the average win rating for a player is in the range of 8%, we have a ridiculously high number of drawn games on this site (or else World Diplomacy IX is bizarrely popular, which seems unthinkable to me). Using only Classic Diplomacy and no draws, you would expect a win ratio averaged at just above 14%.

I've lately had more draws than before, probably in part due to playing live games and in part due to the vote features. Drawing was something that required a forum post and moderator intervention back in the day.

bump
MY STATS:

Defeated: 2 ( 14% )
Drawn: 7 ( 50% )
Survived: 5 ( 36% )
Total (finished): 14
Playing: 7

my two losses are about to be three. One was because I joined a game in which one of those people created an account and left so I was Austria with one unit. My other two were stabs.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Oh yeah, then they introduced the /pause and /draw options, then finally the vote button arrived.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

lol

I remember /draw and /pause

My favorite is how game links used to not confirm. I joined so many games by accident. Remember when people would post something like "I think there's a bug in gameID=xxx" but it was really a new game they tricked you into joining?

Seriously, Gobble, your account has character from its age. I like that my profile shows almost every game of Diplomacy I've played.

Government "aid" to the poor, a success or disaster?
Socialists, statists, liberals and the like consistently, constantly, and incessantly claim that government administered aid is the "only" solution for poverty and uplifting the poor. Where is the real evidence of this success? The youth riots in Britain provide evidence of its failure.

NMR/CD First Year Automatic Cancelling
Has anyone considered adding this option? It makes sense that if someone misses both of their first year's moves, that the game is imbalanced. Would allowing a setting to cancel the game if someone goes CD by the end of the first year be feasible?

Government should regulate WebDip's Website
Following the logic that braindead socialists post on this site all the time about how government knows best then lets put their insane ideas to the test.
If government can run my health care better than I can then surely government could run Webdip better with one hand behind its back than the mods do.

A tax policy scenario.
This thread assumes that the economy is not a zero-sum system, but instead assumes that the economy is a dynamic system capable of real growth.
Thus any assumed increase in wealth results from the output of productive activity, and does not diminish the wealth of anyone else at all.

Why can't Unions survive on their own?
Mitch Daniels signed right to work legislation and union workers protested.
We've had unions in this nation for well over a century.
We've seen the "workers" of the state run a government in the Soviet Union.
With all this historical evidence why can't unions survive without coercion?

My city's sports teams are worse than your city's sports teams.
So, after the Leafs miss the playoffs and the panthers make it. Toronto will hold the record for active playoff drought in the NHL. We sit 4th in the MLB and 6th in the NBA. Eat you heart out Cleveland. This is the worst sports city.
