Springing Forward
Daylight Savings Time starts tonight for most of us in the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean island nations. This isn't the same date as for most other participating countries; consequently, this meant we all had to change our time zones manually when I last was on this site a few years ago.

Remember to Spring Forward if it applies to you, and remember to double-check your clocks on the webDiplomacy website after you do it.

An interesting contest. Which General was better does the community think? Overall, for they both had their specifics where they would win.

My apologies to the players of "two?" gameID=82846
I'm writing to apologize to the players of game "two?" (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=82846) for abandoning the game. An emergency came up and I had to leave. I understand me leaving threw the game off balance for everyone and for that I am sorry. I hope I get a chance to play you guys again in the future.

Sincerely,

United Auto Workers bailed out by Obama
Why did Americans who don't work at General Motors, about 99.9% of the population, waste hundreds of billions bailing out GM? Obama's dependence on union money of course. Our reward
Production of the Chevy Volt halted and 1,300 jobs lost.

Random Person to Post Wins
We all know that the concept of "Last Person to Post Wins" is deeply flawed – it encourages excessive posting which is similar to bidding wars; only except of money, one constantly invests his free time to stay on top which favours the trolls the most, since they have no life and therefore plenty of free time. Random Person to Post Wins alleviates the situation of those who wish to win but can't bother trying. Enjoy.

Looking for a replacement England
England just left a surprisingly solid position in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=81140

It's Autumn retreats, so England will have two builds and a total of six units before there's any new action.

Government "aid" to the poor, a success or disaster?
Socialists, statists, liberals and the like consistently, constantly, and incessantly claim that government administered aid is the "only" solution for poverty and uplifting the poor. Where is the real evidence of this success? The youth riots in Britain provide evidence of its failure.

Has anyone considered adding this option? It makes sense that if someone misses both of their first year's moves, that the game is imbalanced. Would allowing a setting to cancel the game if someone goes CD by the end of the first year be feasible?

Government should regulate WebDip's Website
Following the logic that braindead socialists post on this site all the time about how government knows best then lets put their insane ideas to the test.
If government can run my health care better than I can then surely government could run Webdip better with one hand behind its back than the mods do.

A tax policy scenario.
This thread assumes that the economy is not a zero-sum system, but instead assumes that the economy is a dynamic system capable of real growth.
Thus any assumed increase in wealth results from the output of productive activity, and does not diminish the wealth of anyone else at all.

Why can't Unions survive on their own?
Mitch Daniels signed right to work legislation and union workers protested.
We've had unions in this nation for well over a century.
We've seen the "workers" of the state run a government in the Soviet Union.
With all this historical evidence why can't unions survive without coercion?

My city's sports teams are worse than your city's sports teams.
So, after the Leafs miss the playoffs and the panthers make it. Toronto will hold the record for active playoff drought in the NHL. We sit 4th in the MLB and 6th in the NBA. Eat you heart out Cleveland. This is the worst sports city.

Even worse, San Diego's old NBA team, the Clippers, are owned by one of the biggest douchebags in sports in Donald Sterling. Actually, I take it back, count that as a positive for San Diego.

I agree 2ndWL. You guys got lucky getting rid of that scum. Even if his team is worth watching again after they got Chris Paul once David Stern cock-blocked the Lakers on that trade.

Soccer is on the up and up though thats for sure. recent poll by ESPN says that 12-24 year olds second favorite sport to follow is pro soccer. I agree right now its not a major factor. give it 15 years

Not only does he take advantage of the poor residents of his projects as well as Clippers fans, he has the nerve to heckle his own players (Baron Davis). What a dirtbag. I love watching the Clips this year, but Sterling is just like a black fog that surrounds the team.

Stern famously denied an assistant coach medical coverage when he was suffering from cancer. The fricking players wound up taking a collection amongst themselves to pay for it. That is just the opposite of how things should be.

So, I just looked up where Glenn Howard is from to see if we could take credit for him.

He's from a 'small' town called Tiny, Ontario. It's postal code is L0L. That's gotta be some sort of joke by the postal service.

Sacred lol. You forgot to mention how the city keeps getting talked into building parks on the waterfront, downtown San Diego, and then losing their shirt while the sports team owners walk away with tens of millions of dollars from the deal. But yeah, we do have other things to do here. Still, it would be nice to have a winning team--any winning team--again. *sigh*

" Im a Mets Jets and Knicks fan, my teams have never won a championship since before I knew what sports were AND I get lumped in with spoiled "New York Fans." "

I can top that.
Mets:
Last championship, 1986
Jets:
Last championship, 1969
Nets:
Last championship, never
Tottenham (I follow premier league soccer, not hockey):
Last championship, 1961

I get looked over because the Yankees and Giants win all the time (I hate the Yankees and the Giants), but not a single team I follow has won since I've been born, and the only team either of my parents can remember winning is the Mets. Also, the Mets and the Jets have the worst acronyms ever
My entire team sucks
Just end the season

Here's to one more year of misery... we'll probably be about .500 at the trade dealine and then trade away Wright and Santana T_T
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
I don't think we'll deal Wright and Santana, the Wilpons will want someone to try and attract fans to make money (They're in enough financial difficulties as it is.)

My teams:

Mets:

A fan since 1998, so three playoff appearances, one pennant, 0 WS wins.

49ers:

Just in time to see the last few wins of the Young/Rice era, a decade of futility, and then, this year...two fumbles away...

Ducks:

My 3rd-favorite team is my most successful in my lifetime...? But multiple playoff trips--though probably not this year--and two SC trips, and--hallelujah!--a SC WIN! :D

And yet...I live and die with the Mets...mostly die...a little each year, I suppose... :/

How about Edmonton just now? The Oilers had their day but now they are terrible (they only win when it really does not matter), we have a soccer team... sorta, our baseball team is something like single-A and is taking a "break season" whatever that means, and our CFL team keeps missing the playoffs. Albeit the Eskimos are showing signs of life, but just as we were getting going our oh-so-ingenious GM traded our best QB to the Argos (I think) for their QB who couldn't get a thing going all season. That was shall we say a not-so-smooth move.

^^missing the playoffs in a league where only 2 teams don't make it
G1 (92 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
The basseball bit is just entertaining, but the fact that the Oilers got the dubious honour of first round draft pick 2 years running and are closing in on the hat trick is just a bit embarrassing. The CBJ are winning and we're losing, they might pass us before the end of the season.
Yonni (136 D(S))
09 Mar 12 UTC
G1, you could have won by simply saying "I live in Edmonton"

Why don't you make the trip to come live in a real city?
Kochevnik (1160 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
I don't know, patizcool, I get the rest of your teams, but Spurs are having a pretty good year. Probably the best they're going to do for another 20 years, so you should enjoy it while it lasts. They managed to have a director of football (Comolli) who planned for the future, and bought in good young players, and then replaced him (eventually) with Redknapp, who picked up a bunch of players to fill in the gaps with no regard for the future.

It's going to screw you in the long run (Redknapp always leaves right before his team starts to fall apart) but for this year and maybe next year, you're a pretty decent side.

I don't think San Diego has as much to complain about as some other cities, either. At least the Chargers make the playoffs 2 out of 3 years pretty consistently of late.

when talkign miserable sports cities can i bring up the York area? poor Leeds united. such great history but was relegated and kept down. i wish they would return to the premiership

I like all the "no championships in my lifetime" talk. Buffalo has no championships ever (nor does San Diego).

With hockey, I'm actually kind of shocked that the image of the Maple Leafs now is of a perennial loser. I liked them back when they had Doug Gilmour, a vastly underrated player, but of course I couldn't like them TOO much, being a Sabres fan. But I've always for sure liked them more than that pile of crap Montreal Canadiens. I would say they're a franchise I've always respected, which isn't something I can say about many hockey franchises that aren't Buffalo. They're also one of the few existing franchises (beyond Sabres and Wings) that I have gear for. I have tons of stuff from defunct franchises, though (I always buy it on discount when they announce the end of the team, although I avoided the temptation with the Thrashers).

Anything from the Cincinnati Stingers (former WHA team)? We have a pretty good team now (Cyclones - ECHL / minor league, but still fun to watch). I'd love to see an NHL team here in Cinci.
Yonni (136 D(S))
09 Mar 12 UTC
Join the line draug.
Cinci probably had 5 or 6 cities ahead of it to get an NHL team.

I actually quite liked the thrasher's colours. If their logo was better, it might have been a worthwhile jersey to get.
SacredDigits (102 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
Yeah, the Thrasher's colors were good. But what an awful logo.

Cinci...let's see, I know that there's a guy trying to get hockey back in Quebec City, and he has deep pockets. Plus, you're sort of between Columbus and Nashville. I know Seattle has been considering getting an NHL team, too. However, Cinci is NEAR the south, and Bettman loves teams going south...
DJEcc24 (246 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
i think seattle would be a great place for an NHL team. I would expect soem cool colors in that logo
SacredDigits (102 D)
09 Mar 12 UTC
I think they briefly had one called the Seattle Pilots which became the Cleveland Barons which became...something.
SacredDigits (102 D)

My bad, the Pilots were baseball. The Barons were the former California Golden Seals.
Yonni (136 D(S))

The seattle metropolitans were the first american team to win the Stanley Cup. In the pre-NHL era.
