What is natural?
There have been some arguments and discussions in the forum about what is and what is not natural, particularly in the case of filial cannibalism instincts in human beings and animals. Can we find a consensus on what 'natural' constitutes or can we not escape the fact that 'natural' is in part a socially-constructed concept?

Is, for example, homosexuality any less natural than masturbation?

Freedom of speech on a private server
I realise this has probably been discussed before, probably a dozen times, but as it has been an issue brought up in a number of threads recently, I thought I'd create one where people could discuss and put their thoughts on the issue into a centered discussion. Are there limitations to freedom of speech on a private server? I certainly enjoy the extent to which we have freedom of speech on this private server. What does everyone else think?

House Barbers profit, Senate Barbers bailed out
Cut above the rest House’s private barbershop turned a profit while Senate’s service needed a bailout BY MARK STRICHERZ MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2012. http://www.thedaily.com/page/2012/02/27/022712-news-house-barbershop-1-3/

WASHINGTON — Like his counterparts at the Senate barbershop, House of Representatives scissorman Joe Quattrone has cut the hair of the nation’s political elite.

Also like the Senate’s longtime barber, Mario D’Angelo, Quattrone is an Italian man who wears a tie to work and cultivates a down-to-Earth persona.

But there is one big difference: their business models.

While the Senate barbershop is federally subsidized, the House barbershop is a private business. Its three employees, one of whom is part time, are independent contractors. The House barbershop was privatized in 1994, a decision that House Republicans made after they took control of the lower chamber for the first time in decades.

Quattrone, 78, started working at the House barbershop in March 1970, an era when the shop had 16 barbers, each of whom received federal pensions and benefits. He does not complain about his reduced pay — he makes less than $22,000 a year from commissions — because he knows times have changed.

“We’ve gone through a lot of changes, with members going back to their districts on the weekends and fewer customers because of the extra security that the House has put up after 9/11, but we’re all self-employed,” Quattrone told The Daily. “Money’s not everything. I love coming to work every day. Would you rather go to a job you hated for $50,000 or one you liked for $40,000?”

The dueling business models of the congressional barbershops have produced different financial results.

While the Senate barbershop required a $300,000 federal bailout last year, the House barbershop turned a profit, Quattrone told The Daily. And while Senate Hair Care Services, the formal name for the Senate barbershop, is not charged a dime for its work space, House Cuts pays the government $2,000 to $3,000 in rent each year, Quattrone told The Daily.Making House Cuts profitable has not been easy for Quattrone, the shop’s owner.

The prices for his services are cheaper than those of the Senate. While the Senate barbershop charges $23 for a trim with water but no shampoo and $20 for a shave, the House barbershop charges $17 and $10.

Plus, his shop is in the Rayburn House Office Building, farther from the two adjoining House buildings than is the Senate’s barbershop. And he has three staff members versus 11 in the Senate.

Even Democrats say the fiscal woes of the Senate barbershop do not reflect well on the upper chamber. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., told The Daily that “the House does the people’s business and efficiently, while the Senate doesn’t give taxpayers and voters top priority.”

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., said privatizing government does not appeal to him, but “I would like to know why the Senate barbershop is running its business into the red.”

Carrying on the theme of letting the marketplace and not the government choose winners and losers.
When held in stark comparison the for profit House barber shop made a profit and the subsidized Senate barber shop wasted money and needed a taxpayer bailout.

A recent document from the Congressional Budget Office called-Federal Financial Support for the Development and Production of Fuels and Energy Technologies-shows that the idea that oil companies receive massive tax breaks from the federal government is a myth.

Look at Figure 2 in the report
http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/attachments/03-06-FuelsandEnergy_Brief.pdf

Nuclear Energy received 4% of all government energy related tax breaks.
Fossil Fuels received 15% of all government energy related tax breaks
Energy Efficiency Programs received 10% of all energy related tax breaks.
Renewable Energy received 65% of all energy related tax breaks.

The CBO also pointed out in the study that the reason that renewable energy also required such massive tax support is because "The authors of the study also concluded that one of the majorfactors contributing to the lack of commercial success of
the renewable-energy technologies was the decline in the inflation-adjusted price of oil.

So with almost four times more tax support renewable energy can't compete.

The market tells us that renewable energy can't compete and its high price hurts the overall economy and individual households with bigger electric bills, but Congress keeps pouring money down the dry hole of renewable energy subsidies like tax money is falling from the sky.

Santa Monica College to offer two-tier course pricing

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-college-classes-20120314,0,5085401.story

Faced with deep funding cuts and strong student demand, Santa Monica College is pursuing a plan to offer a selection of higher-cost classes to students who need them, provoking protests from some who question the fairness of such a two-tiered education system.

Under the plan, approved by the governing board and believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, the two-year college would create a nonprofit foundation to offer such in-demand classes as English and math at a cost of about $200 per unit. Currently, fees are $36 per unit, set by the Legislature for California community college students. That fee will rise to $46 this summer.

Hopefully the socialists will win this battle and finish their work of destroying the education system in America so that their bankrupt ideas don't have any credibility to anyone capable of rational thought.

So I'm thinking about getting more fuel efficient in life...
I only have a 5 mile drive to work and plenty of sub 45 MPH backroads. So I've been thinking about a "scooter" type vehicle like a Vespa or a Honda PCX or Silverwing... Any suggestions on what I should look at? Oh, and up to 10K or 11K is permissible so low end cruiser motorcycles work if they have some storage for a laptop bag.

How can only one player in a game get banned for being a multi. Surely to make it effective your multi accounts have to play in the same game. The aptly named 'Notacheater' was banned as a multi after taking place in one game but no-one else in that game was banned, how does that work?
