What is natural?
There have been some arguments and discussions in the forum about what is and what is not natural, particularly in the case of filial cannibalism instincts in human beings and animals. Can we find a consensus on what 'natural' constitutes or can we not escape the fact that 'natural' is in part a socially-constructed concept?

Is, for example, homosexuality any less natural than masturbation?

nm, the stalling team lost.

Well like he losing coach said in the video, if they had hit the threes, then they would have won and he'd have been hailed as a genius.
ghug (5068 D(B))

They lost by more points than they scored, so no, it clearly wasn't a good strategy.

Yeah, is it common to have that much of a skill gap in a state final? My school came in second in the state last year, and I think at least one of those guys is gonna be a pro. It just seems odd that such a poor team would get to the state finals.
NikeFlash (140 D)

Also, Springfield won 53-23 in the semi-finals, much more of a blowout than 16-7

No shot clock? That's an exploitable.

A good coach will look for exploitables and... well.. exploit them.

If it had worked they would fix the rules so you can't exploit anymore (much like the 3 second in the paint rule or w/e it is). It's not a big deal.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

It would have been poor sportsmanship if they had won. The fact that they lost handily, just makes it embarrassing.

As an official for multiple sports: the problem isn't the strategy as much as the rules. No shot clock and no time limit for holding the ball was the problem.

This is why football has so many rules and 'official interpretations'. Coaches will bend the rules beyond their intent to try to win. Look at the A-11 offense. The rule (called the 'numbering exception' rule) used to allow for 'pass eligible numbers' to be on the offensive line when the offense lined up in scrimmage formtion (punts or field goals, but defined by the receiver of the snap to be 7 or more yards behind the LoS). This was put in place for really small schools who have to use backup TEs and WRs on special teams. Well the A-11 was used by super-sized catholic schools taking advantage of that rule. While the A-11 was banned last year by a rule change, unfortunately, the rule (for HS) says that the 'numbering exception' rule is only valid on 4th down........ so what happens when the game is on the line, there is 3 seconds left, the team is down by 2, in FG range...... and it's 1st down? Well, I guess they are screwed over.
Sorry, sidetracked, but pissed by how a knee-jerk rule change screwed people over.

So FK, with that in mind, why don't hockey teams finally bring in like an 800 lb goalie and just have him sit his fat ass in front of the net, obscuring it completely?

this would force them to make it bigger and actually make hockey worth watching once in a while.
fortknox (2059 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
I think that if you put a big guy there, he'd get hit with so many pucks he'd be injured in the first period. Think about it. Most goalies can block pucks with their hands or their sticks. Taking a body shot from Sydney Crosby can't feel good, especially to an 800lb'er.
NikeFlash (140 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
And if you had to do a goalie change, it would take forever (and possible crack the ice?).
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
14 Mar 12 UTC
nah FK they are geared up so it doesn't matter where you get smacked, it doesn't hurt. Pay me NHL rates I'll take those shots easy.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

well if you don't have a shot clock in a game, and if it's legal, then go for it.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
14 Mar 12 UTC
There are equipment restrictions on goalie pads, so the whole fat goalie thing wouldn't work.
Yonni (136 D(S))

One of those crummy sports science shows put a sumo wrestler in the net and let Paros (great mustache, not so great shot) shoot on him. A fat guy doesn't take up nearly as much room as you think.

Couple of notes from an Oregonian.

First, these two teams had already played twice during the regular season and Springfield won all three games. Having already lost twice to them the coach decided on desperate measures.

I agree it is unsportsmanlike to waste clock and I am glad they lost. I imagine that they don't have a shot clock at the high school level due to the costs involved in the equipment perhaps. Just a guess.

As for the matchup, well, that is what you get with single elimination tournaments. A lesser team can get the breaks to get past better teams and end up looking silly in the end.

I watched part of the 5A boys game online and saw the Oregon Duck's floor for the first time and frankly think it looks really good. And I'm a Beaver so that is saying something. The image of the surrounding trees represents the western half of the state of Oregon very well.

I didn't see it the first time I read through it and just rescanned it and still don't see it. But perhaps it was stated in the video that I didn't watch. Or I'm just missing it.

Freedom of speech on a private server
I realise this has probably been discussed before, probably a dozen times, but as it has been an issue brought up in a number of threads recently, I thought I'd create one where people could discuss and put their thoughts on the issue into a centered discussion. Are there limitations to freedom of speech on a private server? I certainly enjoy the extent to which we have freedom of speech on this private server. What does everyone else think?

So I'm thinking about getting more fuel efficient in life...
I only have a 5 mile drive to work and plenty of sub 45 MPH backroads. So I've been thinking about a "scooter" type vehicle like a Vespa or a Honda PCX or Silverwing... Any suggestions on what I should look at? Oh, and up to 10K or 11K is permissible so low end cruiser motorcycles work if they have some storage for a laptop bag.

How can only one player in a game get banned for being a multi. Surely to make it effective your multi accounts have to play in the same game. The aptly named 'Notacheater' was banned as a multi after taking place in one game but no-one else in that game was banned, how does that work?
