When is a game cancelled for cheating and when not?
I was in an anonymous game which was cancelled earlier this week after I reported fishy behaviour of two of the players. If those players had been banned and game continued I would probably have won the game (primarily because I would have been the only 'survivor' left.
Hardin (738 D)

However I was also part of another anonymous game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=17081#gamePanel in which the largest remaining player (17 supply centres) has just been banned. Yet that game was not cancelled despite state of play after the banning pretty much guaranteeing a win for one of the surviving players (the German now has the easiest access to all the banned player's SCs...

So who makes the judgement of when a game should be cancelled and when not. Is there some hard criteria or is it a matter of Mod judgement? I admit to some personal interest as I would like my bet back and the defeat expunged from my record :-p

Whilst mod judgement has a part to play in it, that is in deciding how much effect the cheating has had.
If there is only one account in that game then surely their actions were achieved legitimately, and their banning is akin to going CD.
However, if there are two cheating accounts in a game then the effect is unfair on the other players.

It's very strange in this case. You're effectively comepletely throwing the game off-balance, or in case there is a replacement, selling an almost sure win for points.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
20 Jan 10 UTC
I'm not sure how this is unfair though?
If the major player had gone CD on his own accord you wouldn't complain.

Two players in that game were eliminated whilst Turkey was still playing, another pushed to the limit by him.
As such you aren't loosing out from his disappearance, merely wanting that the other two don't gain from it? Besides, someone could take over Turkey and finish the game for you as it is?
In that case none of you would gain from him being gone, yet another player would.
I guess my point is that those who were killed by Turkey were defeated fairly. However, those who are left do stand to gain a little because buying in increases the point, and if Turkey isn't taken over soon they stand to gain quite a bit.
SEcki (1171 D)

btw, why is Turkey 140 D worth when the whole pot is only 140? Somehow people wouldn't join on this accoutn, would they?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
20 Jan 10 UTC
Because when he joins the pot will double.
Also it would give them a win which is valued. I would consider taking over but I don't think its responsible/fair to take over a slot I just opened!
Gobo (100 D)
20 Jan 10 UTC
It is a strange case, because if Turkey would have gone CD, then the players would not know at first, then have another turn to take advantage of inactivity before the player actually went CD.

Now someone can pay 140 for an almost sure win, and you get your points back. Seems like a pretty fair price.
SEcki (1171 D)

I pretty much want to see someone take this and show me how to make that a win for Turkey; I would have already taken it if I could figure that out! ;)
Gobo (100 D)
20 Jan 10 UTC
I did not say sure win, I said *almost* sure win ;)
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I recon I could SEcki, and I expect you could too, but as I said I don't take over CDs of my own bans, it risks seeming unfair.
happyjo (330 D)

Fig if someone is shown to be playing an unfair advantage, then surely that would make the whole game suspicious.
In my game England has been kicked out for cheating, but that account must of been used by one of the other players still in the game and is still reaping the benefits of his deception.
Why not have a rule that if someone false accounts or multi accounts then at least start the game again or give the existing players the option to have the game cancelled in exceptional circumstances.
Xapi (194 D)

Players always have the option to cancel.

If the mod feels that at least one player has been wronged by a multi-alliance, then he will cancel the game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jan 10 UTC
@happyjo - if a player is banned then they are kicked out of all their games, but that doesn't mean they were cheating in all of them. perhaps only one of the multis/metas was in your game which is likely considering only one person was kicked out. In that case, they weren't cheating in your game but in another.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
20 Jan 10 UTC
@Draug - Exactly.
@happy - See Draug's above.

In the game in question there was an account belonging to a player. To the best of my knowledge they had not cheated in that game, but had in others. As such the account was banned - it had broken the rules after all - but the game was not cancelled because within it nothing unfair had occured.

Okay an UPDATE: Someone new signed up for Turkey and then posted this in General:
-------------------------------------
"i told the mods that i wasnt multiaccounting but they didnt believe me. rooster man is one of bearnstiens many, many accounts, and i was linked into it for some reason or another. some user named thursday, which i think is also bearnstien, lost a game to me and came out and said i was a rooster multi, when in fact rooster is himself as well. he just wanted to get revenge.

so figle. reinstate me please
--------------------------------------

And was then kicked out of game again. Basically whatever Figle says now the game has been screwed beyon repair. The main power with 17 SC (Turkey) has now been removed twice... which has without any shadow of a doubt altered the course of the game significantly... I really think that CANCELING that game and returning all the honest player's orginal bets is the best and most decent thing for the mods to do now...

Hardin, I have answered your question many times, please stop repeating it!
If you want the game cancelled you within the game can cancel it yourselves. However I will not be forcing judgement upon you

Don't worry about it man. Lots of people cheat. But they usually suck really bad at dip so just beat them by making an alliance against the cheaters.

Meta gaming in gunboat games
In this gunboat game, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?g'ameID=17712 ,
Russia, Germany, and Italy are playing an alliance...

I would like to thing it was natural and not just cheating but the Autumn 1902 move of Russia in galicia supporting Italy' s Tyrolia to Vienna was the first real recognition of this cheating communication.

Units missing from map in pre-game
Hi, I'm new here and am a little confused.
In game #18940 it's in pre-game, and orders have been placed, but no units appear on the map.
In game#19581 it's in the same phase, but units do appear.
Any idea why units are missing from the first game? Thanks!

Question/Suggestion
I think there should be a SEARCH function button where one can search for a particular user.... eg: I am trying to find the Captains of the Australian World Cup teams and its impossible.
Unless they EVER post on this forum again, i won't spend days and days trawling thru the forum posts of yesteryear in order to find them...

Or is there another way to do this?

Isn’t It Funny . . . .
Isn’t it funny how some players\allies, after missing a turn or making wrong moves, and in doing so put both themselves as well as their counterpart at risk of takeover believe that the other player is still obligated to blindly support and\or work with them due to an agreed upon alliance? And if you don’t you are ‘stabbing’ them. Couldn’t those above actions be loosely be considered ‘a stab’ in and of themselves?

guilt
I think I've posted something similar about this in the past....
But, one thing I really dislike about diplomacy is the guilt that I carry throughout the game that will only get heavier and heavier as the game finishes.

Something Fishy
Please observe France and Russia's behavior in this game. Another note - Russia never sent any messages to anybody else in this game. And France was pretty tight lipped too...perhaps too busy entering in their several orders to notice they had messages?

And Somewhere the John, Bobby and Ted Kennedy cry, "Can't We Catch ONE Break?"
The Republicans win the MAS. election, and can now stop health care and play a stonewall to Obama's idea... and on the seat the Ted Kennedy sat for for nearly 50 years and dreamt of health care and all... it dies.

Thoughts on the political outfall (and the Kennedys REALLY ARE CURSED!) ;)
