Public press is kind of like a halfway point between gunboat and normal diplomacy, isn't it?

Actually I think public press is more close to FtF games.
In real life you can see who's talking with who.

I can't imagine a 5 minute live public press game. That must have been hell. I have played in 3. Two of them were fantastic. One was horrible because a couple of players didn't know it was public press. Hellalt and I played one a month or two ago and it was a really good game. Glad the game is passworded...keeps out the riff raff. And by riff raff, I mean people who don't read the game descriptions. ;)

Agreed, it has a lot of the aspects of a face-to-face game, including the notorious kill-the-leader mentality. I don't think it's halfway between gunboat and normal, it's nothing like gunboat at all; sort of a completely separate type of its own.

Too bad we don't have grey press and black press as options; that would make for some interesting games.

Grey press and black press were options under the old automated e-mail Diplomacy Judge. If I recall correctly, grey press was when you could send messages anonymously, so that other players didn't know who it was coming from. Black press was when you could send messages pretending to be another player; so if you were England, you could send a message to France, but set it so that it looks as if it came from Germany. Those options weren't used very often, but they made for some crazy games.

Otto--have you played a longer public press game? It has it's own challenges. And don't most games have the kill the leader mentality? You should join this one. I would like to see you there.

no i haven't before played a longer ppg. With the swim season about to accelerate my life to hell, I will only have time for live games on weekends (rarely, with this being the last weekend probably) and games i have consciously joined because they have a 2 day + phase limit which gives me time to respond if I'm swamped with work. I would love to join, if it had a longer phase. Thanks for the offer.
