*Yes, there was no DH in the Babe's day, but let's face it- as a great a hitter and as stout a guy (heart and waistline) as he was, he's a perfect fit for the DH- love it or hate it.
Honorable Mentions (and why I left them off:)
-Yogi Berra. Right at the top of the list some people certainly cried foul, as Berra is quite possibly the best all-around catcher ever, certainly up there. Some people can accept Bench over Berra, and say OK, Berra's a good backup... and then there's Piazza!? WHY? Because this is a TEAM- Bench is the best defensive catcher ever, and has a good bat; Piazza has THE best bat in MLB history for a catcher, and was one of the best calling games and handling the pitchers... Berra sort of falls in between those two, and so just falls short of the list, as three catchers is really a bit absurd (but I love ya, Yogi!)
-Carlton Fisk: See Yogi Berra above; Piazza chosen over him.
-Ivan Rodriguez: See Yogi Berra above; Bench chosen over him
-Willie Stargell: a GREAT 1B... but Gehrig is Gehrig, and he just couldn't beat out anyone else for the bench.
-Joe Morgan: GREAT 2B, but I just can't pick him over Hornsby (.400 hitter) or Robinson (I'd consider him one of the most dangerous ever at the position offensively and stealing bases) or Sandberg (best fielding 2B all-time.)
-Bill Mazeroski: See Joe Morgan above
-Derek Jeter: Maybe by the end of his career he'll crack the list... but for now I'll take Wagner and Cal, just legendary...
-Eddie Matthews: I think Brooks Robinson was the best all-time defensively, and had a good enough bat; Eddie had a good bat and good D, a great 3B, but not over Robinson, and not over the bench players.
-Frank Robinson- I can't see him beating any of my outfielders... and it doesn't help he bounced around and split his best years and prestige with two teams.
-ANY player convicted of/"known" to have taken steroids: For "known" see players like Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa... and I field a clean team.
So- comments? :p
