Writers
How about in the spirit of friendship, we share poems and short stories and jokes we've made up and things like that? Of course we all have opposing political ideas, they wouldnt be politics if we didnt right? but we can still all get along and value each others input too.

As promised, I have compiled a listing of a variety of statistics covering 1001 consecutive games. I did not calculate the following types of games since they throw off the statistics in one way or another:

There is this game in which Austria, a noob in his first game ever doesn't want to ally with I and T and prefers to grant E a victory instead of going for a draw.

Why are so many games passworded?
Can someone explain why most games require a password. Surely new and inexperienced payers will only get better by playing with good and experienced players.

I'm looking testers to join a game, specifically testing 1) in-game instant messaging and 2) Adaptation of the "Fall of the American Empire" 10-player variant (see http://careyj.com/dip/map/EMP/initialMap_small.png )

Anyone speak Swedish?
Browsing Wikipedia I read that one of the founders of The Pirate Bay was implicated in a robbery of a primary school, and his blood was found at the scene of the crime. The source is in Swedish though, thought I'd try my luck and see if anyone could translate the relevant parts?

As an opponent of The Pirate Bay I would really be interested in learning more about this.

Kestas, if you find out any more, would you email me if you have the time? (email in my profile)

Yeah, the article is very vague:

On August 11, 2002, two computers and a monitor were stolen from Dalaskolan in Bromölla and blood was left at the scene.

In compliance with the recent suite against the pirate bay, Fredrik Neij had given a DNA sample (WTF?!) and the solicitor for the prosecution later matched that to this crime from 2002.

Jonas Nilsson Gothenburg is his public appointed solicitor.

Why would they require DNA samples for the charges against TPB?

I've logged onto TPB probably as many times as I have here. I have no qualms with downloading movies, music, and software because I'm selfish and couldn't afford it any other way.
- TV producers don't care, but now they wish they'd gotten their hulus and fox.coms up before piracy took hold.
- Movie producers hate the price of DVDs and really only want people to buy a ticket, so they hate the cams and bootleggers.
- Music producers, sorry, you're getting screwed. Do more commercials and get more royalties from movies and TV!
- Game producers. Solo games belong on the consoles, something far less pirated. If you're going to make a PC game, make it damn good or make it online.
- Software producers. If I ever start making money from photoshop, I'll consider spending the whaleload on it, or I'll download GIMP.

Geofram, you seem surprised that the Swedish state has the DNA of a citizen which is accused at a court of law?

You might get even more surprised to know that a DNA sample is taken from EVERY child that is born in Sweden (the PKU test). That sample is then stored in a biobank. Scientist can do research on that biobank , but you can also catch a criminal through it..

The resolving of the murder of Swedish politician Anna Lindh, was in part due to the fact that the DNA of the murderer could be match with the store DNA data in that biobank...

Something that might scare people who do not trust the government perhaps :)

With that being said - I think the data is only used in cases like murder.
Then again - who knows ..

it seems fair that police can get information about a person based on blood they find at the scene of a crime. (ie they have evidence that a person was involved in or witnessed a crime, now they want to investigate/question that person) and so having access to a database of this sort is fine by me (so long as they don't have read access, just search and pattern matching access) Either that or making the informaiton available to the public, so everyone can read it...

also @piracy/copyright, If i can copy and re-distribute a file/film/game/whatever for a minimal of cost then why can't a movie/music video/whatever producer?

Where open srouce has allowed creativity to software designers (copying other people's code and using it for your own gain) youtube has opened up the same creativity to video creation. (an abundance of which only a small amount is worth watching, but fortunately we have a new tech company called google who specializes in search)

The world has changed and the laws need to catch up. Copyright was concieved as a public good to encourage "learned men to compose and write useful books" to better spread ideas. In this centrury things have changed, both how we spread ideas and what copyright is used for.

Further it was originally limited to a 14 year term. I don't see why copyright needs to extend beyond a 10 year term for modern tv shows. And until the law is both enforcable and actually in the public interest i do not intend to follow it.

@orathaic - open source does not allow for the person modifying the code and redistrubiting it to gain from the base code in any way. for isntance. No one sells a flavor of Linux. The software is free. They sell the manual they wrote for that flavor of Linux only. Look into the various licensing systems (ask kestas about them) and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Oh, and that you intend to violate the law is good to know. I'm sure your local authorities will be investigating soon.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

by their own gain, i meant the get to use that new software which they have created.

Sorry, i was unclear. If you have a computer program and it does something which you find sligthly annoying, and would like to tweak, this ability fosters creativity and encourages new innovations, basically outsourcing the creative process to a world-wide audience. It is to the benifit of all.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I'm sure my local authorities have better things to be doing; though i will happily argue my case in court and bring more media attension on the issue of "piracy" - please note: copyright violate is NOT theft.

This is a weird story... why would a TPB founder rob a primary school for computers? I'm pretty sure the TPB founders have a decent amount of income...

And who robs a primary school?!
