Live Games- are there any success stories?
We are getting more and more live game starting threads these days with the new phpdip release that allows v.short turn phases. i`d like to hear if there has been any success stories or is it just mainly crashes/people leaving etc

It's been odd. I've been spectating. Some odd and amusing decisions made.

I'd like to see typed orders for live games rather than selecting from a list of options. Face-to-Face abounds with errors related to wrongly written orders.

haha that is so true.
and so frustrating

there are a lotttt of mistakes and it is sooo stressful lol

The biggest mistake I've made on here during a live game was screwing up a build as Italy, and putting a Fleet in Venice in the midst of negotiations with Austria. Oops.

The only live game I played there wasn't alot of time for diplomacy, especially if someone was slow with replies. I feel the format favours early leaders because its harder to break up alliances without constant messaging.

i'd say i've had moderate success with live games.

i've had maybe one successful live game out of 8 or so.

However, they're getting better. I think we need to implement either a CD penalty/rating so that there is more incentive for people to finish what they started OR maybe a list of bad live players...

They're insanely fun....I think we're almost to the point where they are going to work quite well.

i also don't see anything wrong with playing for a few hours and then canceling. the fun is the game, and having the cancel option seems ideal for if someone has to pop out or can't play anymore. the option of the 24 hour phase (or whatever normal phase length) that you have voluntary shorter phases is also good, but not as good i think b/c it just becomes a normal game after a few hours. which is fine, i suppose, but sometimes i want to play a live game but don't want to add a new regular game b/c of time constraints beyond that one day.
I'm thinking about starting one tonight. My Cross-Country meet was cancelled so I have the whole night for myself.
I haven't had a succesful one. They're still fun as djbent said.

I will be starting one tomorrow (Fri) PM. I love them when they work. If you can type fast, they are fantastic. The first time I ever did one though, 2 live games got set up at the same time and I got assigned to R in both!!!!!!!!!! what a mess tyring to send in all those orders at the same time, everyone was mad at me for going past the 15 min phase length
Crazyter (1335 D(G))

Now what I would really really really like (Kestas are you listening ?) would be the ability to do a live game for a few hours and then a mandatory pause kicks in for eating, sleeping, whatever. This pause will have already been agreed upon before the game starts so that no one can screw it up later.

So for example my fantasy weekend would be Live Game from 3-6 PM Fri Sat and Sun
Agreed. Complicated though. It'd be hard to find participants who will want to take breaks and start when you want to.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))

Well we all agree up front that we will play for x hours each day for y days. Like now we all agree up front how long the phase length will be. Don't you think some people might want a live weekend tournament with a few bathroom breaks and naps?

I played my first live game last night and it was great fun.
I enjoy the faster pace. I have no idea how you managed to play two at once Crazyter.

Plus it was the first time I ever played Russia. And you know R has 4 units at first so there I was giving orders for 8 units and they only had to give orders for 3. Like I said everyone got really mad at me for going beyond 15 minutes.

So tailborader and zAzA and djbent, how about joining the live game tomorrow ? So far Steven C has signed on

I am not sure what time I will be off. If I am free I will. I do not want to commit then have to crawfish.

No more game notices?
I noticed that the 'home' page, the center column (notices) only shows messages sent back and forth, and no longer game notices. I was just getting used to those. Will those come back (maybe another column)?

bug?
Austria placed two moves in Autumn of 1904 that were fails that don't appear to have been so. "Vienna" and "Budapest" support orders. Curious about this. Thanks!

why such long game turns?
prior to the changeover it was very easy to find games with 12 or 18 hour turns, now they rarely seem to be less than 36 hour games and often longer. Any thoughts on why this is?

Yes I know I can start my own games, and will probably start doing so; I am interested in the thought of others why a longer game is better.
