No more game notices?
I noticed that the 'home' page, the center column (notices) only shows messages sent back and forth, and no longer game notices. I was just getting used to those. Will those come back (maybe another column)?

Favorit Comic Strip
No idea why I'm even making this a thread. I think something just hit me as funny. Anyway:

Calvin and Hobbes - far and away my favorite
Bloom County/Far Side - tied for a distant second

Non Sequitur, Ballard Street. Bloom Couny and Far Side where faverites when they where still writing new strips.
I haven't read any Bloom Country comics. What is it about?

I like Get Fuzzy and Pearls before Swine. Zits is pretty good too. My favorite is Far Side.
mugence (417 D)
29 Sep 09 UTC
Im gonna have to go with Get Fuzzy for sure. I have met Darby Conley, and the man is very very witty. Far Side was very influential and perfect for what it was. One frame, one obvious joke with the possibility of multiple underlying ones. Calvin and Hobbes is a classic but in the long run Calvin just started to annoy me. Garfield was gold when I was younger but now its humor is something for the kids in elementary school.

Damn, I forgot about get fuzzy. Bucky is absolutely hilarious. There's something to be said for evil, but incompetent:)

Calvin and Hobbes tops my list.

Bloom County was really good too, although when it changed into whatever that other strip it went stupid. Jumped the shark. Sad to see a good comic end like that.

@ZaZa, Bloom County was a somewhat political strip that did things in a very light hearted manner. Check your local library.

Here are some of the authors favorite strips: http://www.berkeleybreathed.com/pages/favorite_strips.asp

Also some here: http://www.angelfire.com/vamp/shoopshoop/bloomcounty.html

Doonesbury, Dilbert & th' Peanuts are all good stuff, i was a "techy" for NCR in australia for 7 years, & am still a "techy" so i like Dilbert & the other characters in that strip. I love cartoons & cartoonists, from the English press's propaganda in the Napoleonic wars to the modern. Favourites internationally : Ronald Searle, a New York cartoonist from the 70's ? Jules Ffeiffer,( not sure of that spelling offhand) his book "Sick, Sick, Sick" with the little boy who gets draft'd into US army cartoon, John Lennon's "Spaniard in the works" , i have a 2nd ed, found for 50 cents in charity shop Bellarine peninsula Victoria is humour more than strict "cartoonist" classsification. There are some really good English hardcopy's from 1950's of French cartoonists as well as English cartoonists. Some really good cartoons were print'd by the "erotica"magazine publishers because they print'd in colour & on higher quality paper than newspapers, i have a large hardcover USA "Esquire" book of cartoons from the early 1960's that's brilliant. Aussie cartoonists, Michael Luenig, Bruce Petty & so many others. the English Punch magazine through all it's forms over the years it was publish'd. It's a great way for an artist to reach an audience, & the net provides unlimit'd opportunities, like the NZ "beach'd as, parch'd as whale who can't eat "chups" & needs ter git wit esep" cartoon on youtube.

* Eisenhower-era 'Peanuts' was probably the best.
* 'Calvin and Hobbes' -- hilarious and beautifully drawn.
* 'Perry Bible Fellowship' -- funniest four panels on the web.

Calvin and Hobbes. Hands down best ever. Literally shaped parts of my childhood.

calvin and hobbes is amazing, my favorite. but get fuzzy and pearls before swine are funny too.
Alderian, Pickles is the best! Funny grandpa and grandma with a teenage sense of humor.

Also: I don't get what makes Peanuts so popular. It gets a chuckle out of me but compared to others, I don't understand what all they hype is about.

Another vote for Calvin & Hobbes, with the Far Side & Dilbert also making me laugh - anyone who works in a corporate entity should find resonance in Dilbert.

On the other hand, Peanuts and Garfield leave me cold. But my least enjoyable ones are The Broons and Oor Willie, but only a small subset of the Uk population will even know what I'm on about
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I'm not sure why I didn't also say Far Side. One of the best comics ever. Just below Calvin and Hobbes.

Calvin & Hobbes, Herman, Far Side, Dilbert.
flashman (2274 D(G))

I found peanuts gentle and predictable;

Garfield leaves me very cold indeed - I just do not find anything in it able to surprise me with creativity;

I am surprised at the number of votes for Calvin and Hobbes - I tend to view it as a sit-com and therefore the individual cartoons do not contribute that much. Not a criticism, just the way I see it;

my vote went to the Far Side because of the Gary Larsson's ability to do exactly that: be surprisingly creative. A single picture (often without words) could evoke a whole string of thought, with a punchline at the end. It did not need to draw on previous pieces to make use of characters or story lines.

My thoughts anyway. I do believe that for a single, isolated cartoon, The Far Side had no rival.

My favorite Far Side is a rarity: two panels. The first has a bunch of cows standing around smoking and chatting like people while one hollers "Car!". The second shows the car going by and them all acting like normal cows.

@Draugnar:

There are quite a few multi-panel Far Sides that like too, and I know the one you mean. I happen to like the Sprecken sie Deutch one (four panels).

I'm unaware of the specific cartoon you're talking about, but the proper German spelling is "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?"

No seriously Married to the Sea is the best.

Far side is the best in print though I think I've seen them all lol.

The one you mention is pretty funny Draugnar.
LanGaidin (1509 D)
01 Oct 09 UTC
Larson could do so much w/ one panel. There are too many that just make me laugh.
Bloom County was great when it was poking fun at politics.
Dilbert is hilarious and so dead-on when looking at the corporate world.
Get Fuzzy - Bucky Cat is one of the most hilarious characters ever - even the way he looks makes me laugh. I love when he's complaining to Rob about the canned tuna being dolphin safe - "It was probably the dolphins that gave it the flavor".
Calvin&Hobbes - pure artistry, aesthetically beautiful, and just an absolute joy to read. The kid couldn't add 3+7 (37), but he had a vocabulary many adults I know would envy.
flashman (2274 D(G))

@Draugnar

Complete typo mess by me with the German there. The cartoon has a man trying to communicate with a duck. Panel three identifies that the duck speaks, well, Duck. The final panel is a conversation between the two of them. I will not spoil the punchline.

Actually, it might be a six panel cartoon, and Panel Five is where they identify a common language. I have the complete collection of published and (formerly) unpublished works - beautifully produced, I shall look this one up later. I shall also probably get lost exploring the pages.

why such long game turns?
prior to the changeover it was very easy to find games with 12 or 18 hour turns, now they rarely seem to be less than 36 hour games and often longer. Any thoughts on why this is?

Yes I know I can start my own games, and will probably start doing so; I am interested in the thought of others why a longer game is better.
