Missing Player
In one of my games, we are missing a player, and the game is paused. I was hoping one of the Gamemasters could unpause it, or at least put the missing player in Social Disorder so we can replace him. Thanks in advance : )

What happens to a game that does not start with enough players?
If there's only 5 or 6 players, I know Italy and some other country start as CD.

But what happens if there's like...only two players? Does the game wait for more, or does it become a east vs. west game?

Players haven't logged in for 2 weeks
There's two players in this paused game that haven't logged in for over 2 weeks. Could we force a draw somehow?

So, how are points divvied up again?
Just won a game, http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8371 , where the pot was 50 points. For winning with 18 SCs, I was awarded 18 points.

I thought you were supposed to get most of the points in the pot if you won.

Someone refusing to unpause because they're losing
writing a response now.. :S
Sourness (173 D)
18 Mar 09 UTC
I (Sourness) am playing as Italy and am currently allied with Turkey (Korimyr the Rat) against England (Alqazar). We are gradually surrounding England with fleets (which obviously has taken a while), and we hope to eliminate England and then have an Italy-Turkey draw. England doesn't like this and will not vote to unpause the game.

here is a link to the game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8322

and here is what the general conversation has been like:

Alqazar (England): "you guys keep wasting our time with your BS nonsense. So I am not unpausing."
Korimyr the Rat(Turkey): "How is not accepting an unnecessary and disadvantageous draw "BS nonsense"? Do please explain, because it sounds like you are refusing to unpause because the game is not going your way."
Alqazar (England): "You are deliberately wasting our time with your moves. Plus you're refusing to attack each other. That says to me you're dragging this out just to waste our time."
Sourness (Italy): "So you're saying two players in diplomacy would rather 'waste the time' of someone they don't know than try to get as many points as they can before the game ends? That's a bit silly isn't it?"
Alqazar (England): "This game should have been over a month ago but you're just dawdling around. The Turks in the Mid-Atantic? Italians in the Norwegian Sea? You're just wasting time for shits and giggles. What are you up to, you want to convoy an army from Smyrna to St Petersburg eventually? Sorry, but I am not unpausing just so you two idiots can waste more time."
Sourness (Turkey): "maybe we're surrounding you to attack your home land DUHHH"
Alqazar (England): "Not with the moves you've been doing."

I'm wondering what I can do, he could be neutralised by the mods or pehaps the game unpaused (but I sometimes need to pause on weekends, not too much to ask is it?). The problem with the second option is that he might refuse to unpause again...?

Well, I see no reason to not unpause this game. England seems concerned that you two are just playing games with him. That's somewhat understandable...what isn't understandable is not wanting to unpause.

However, I think the pause option should be used as a last resort. If you need to pause every weekend, maybe you should just get a sitter (someone to play for you while you are away) or play in longer phased games.

Seems England is likely capitalizing on your over-use of pausing. I can see where that might be annoying...not to say this is right, but perhaps he's just playing a little tit for tat.

What if you agreed to find yourself a sitter on the weekends and not to pause again for the remainder of the game so that he can unpause to finish the game?
Sourness (173 D)
18 Mar 09 UTC
that's a good idea, I'm new to online diplomacy and I hadn't heard of/thought of sitters

I don't think that's his problem though.. He's quite adament that I am not trying to win but am just marching and sailing around the map randomly, which is ridiculous.

But it's the same with children; even after they've realised in the wrong they're too stubborn to admit it and will fight for something as petty as this until the bitter end

I've got 3 comments:

1) If I were England I would be concerned about the extreme trust shown between Italy and Turkey. There were at least two instances where one of you took a SD or two from the other and no reprisals or really even a hint of reprisal occured.

I'm not accusing the two of you of anything. In fact, I double checked the accounts and you both certainly look completely clean. But I can see why England or another player would be concerned.

2) Many people contend that the goal of diplomacy is to win. Obviously when you're down to 1 or 2 SD your goal may change to play for a draw - I'm not saying don't be realistic - but to intentionally play for a draw over the last 2-3 years at least violates the spirit of Diplomacy (in my opinion). PPSC games have this effect unfortunately. I know I can't fight it, but I just needed to complain about it again. (Of course maybe you're lying and plan to stab Turkey at the last minute to take the solo - I hope).

3) Barring an accusation of multiaccounting that is under investigation, refusing to unpause is not acceptable. Since I've already investigated and found no evidence of collusion I will unpause your game if England continues to refuse. I'll give him 24 hours to do it himself to avoid any NMRs.

Re 1), there are times in a game when I've agreed to swap SCs with an ally, they can make better use of the strategic build, etc.

I've frequently played with an ally to the end with the aim of either a draw or first to 18, a stab isn't necessary if the alliance is strong.

I expect a last turrn stab from everyone, but wiping out everyone but my ally can be fun, although I admit it's frustrating for the 3rd player.

Having said that, the 1st guy I did it to is someone I've allied with regularly since, he fought every SC hard and outmanouvered us several times, the final victory was a massive challenge.

"the 1st guy I did it to is someone I've allied with regularly since" I hope that's not true, because regular means that you know when you enter a game if you'll ally with him or not!

Well, the time Turkey and I decided to take over England and go for a draw, he looked weak and it seemed it wouldn't take years.

It's only because he fought back that it's been lasting so long.

Figle, it's on the FB app, and I think we've been in 4 games together total, in two we've worked together, the other there wasn't any real contact.

I don't auto ally, nor do I auto oppose, but if all other factors are equal, I'd rather ally with a good player if I'm given a choice. But I'll also stab happily if necessary. In one of the games we're currently allied, that alliance happened as my former ally stabbed me, the plan had been to take him out, instead we worked together.

Frequently, regardless of intentions, the actions of other players force an alliance regardless, it happens.

Quick rules question
Does a convoy cut support for an attack on a province supporting the convoy? Example:
Russia convoys Sev to Ank, supported by Arm
Turkey orders Ank to support Smy to Arm
Does everything bounce, or does Turkey take Arm?
