Missing Player
In one of my games, we are missing a player, and the game is paused. I was hoping one of the Gamemasters could unpause it, or at least put the missing player in Social Disorder so we can replace him. Thanks in advance : )

Gerald Celente
who is familiar with him?
thoughts on him?
I want to find out what people think about him first, then maybe move into his predictions for 2009 and beyond
Darwyn (1601 D)
18 Mar 09 UTC
I have never heard of him until I googled him from this thread...

I'd have to say, his predictions for 2009 and beyond are similar to some of the things I am anticipating.
Sicarius (673 D)
18 Mar 09 UTC
oh yeah definitely. thats already what I was expecting, now that celente said it i should start preparing lol
Toby Bartels (361 D)

I haven't looked at him, but if you want to know whether to trust his predictions for 2009, then first check his predictions for 2008!
Sicarius (673 D)

I did.
he's pretty spot on.
he's almost always pretty spot on

Is there any comprehensive list of his predictions (with deadlines for coming true)? On his web site, I find a list of greatest hits that may leave out the wrong guesses; on the anti-sites, I find snide remarks or predictions that haven't come true yet, but no false predictions with deadlines.

If he mostly makes predictions with no deadline, then the crticism is accurate, and I wouldn't start paying attention now that he's predicted specific catastrophes by 2012. Or if the wrong predictions did have a deadline that passed, then I guess that he's often wrong. But if the wrong predictions were for the entire century and he's made other predictions, mostly correct, on 4-year periods, then I'd trust him. If you know a comprehensive list, I'd like to see it.
Sicarius (673 D)

I dont know where to find a comprehensive list
he predicted alot of trends in the stock market correctly, dont know if any of those were wrong
he predicted the fall of the soviet union, the 1997 Asian Currency Crisis, the subprime mortgage collapse and the massive devaluation of the U.S. dollar, “the panic of 2008,” adding that “giants (would) tumble to their deaths", the dot com boom and bust, the explosion of coffee shops (starbucks, bigbees, beaners), idk and I know I've heard of alot more

and I found these quotes about him "When CNN wants to know about the Top Trends, we ask Gerald Celente.”
— CNN Headline News
“A network of 25 experts whose range of specialties would rival many university faculties.”
— The Economist
“Gerald Celente has a knack for getting the zeitgeist right.”
— USA Today
“There’s not a better trend forecaster than Gerald Celente. The man knows what he’s talking about.”
- CNBC
“Those who take their predictions seriously … consider the Trends Research Institute.”
— The Wall Street Journal
“Gerald Celente is always ahead of the curve on trends and uncannily on the mark … he’s one of the most accurate forecasters around.”
— The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“Mr. Celente tracks the world’s social, economic and business trends for corporate clients.”
— The New York Times
“Mr. Celente is a very intelligent guy. We are able to learn about trends from an authority.”
— 48 Hours, CBS News
“Gerald Celente has a solid track record. He has predicted everything from the 1987 stock market crash and the demise of the Soviet Union to green marketing and corporate downsizing.”
— The Detroit News
“Gerald Celente forecast the 1987 stock market crash, ‘green marketing,’ and the boom in gourmet coffees.”
— Chicago Tribune
“The Trends Research Institute is the Standard and Poors of Popular Culture.”
— The Los Angeles Times
“If Nostradamus were alive today, he’d have a hard time keeping up with Gerald Celente.”
— New York Post

Yeah, I read all of the quotes selected for his homepage too, they don't mean anything.

Also people keep bringing up the Soviet Union one, even though his website dates that prediction to 1990. In 1990, *I* was predicting the fall of the Soviet Union! (That's just one, of course, but it's annoying that it keeps getting mentioned like some great coup. The economic predictions are better.)

I do think that it's a good sign (for his accuracy, I mean) that I can't find any clear debunking. If half of his predictions are wrong or if they're all open-ended, then somebody ought to be able to say that, and nobody's saying that. So I'm inclined to take what he says seriously, although I'd stop short of simply *trusting* him.

Well that's very impressive. I'm really hoping he turns out to be the worst trendbettor...

I'm still a little skeptical though because his list of predictions sound too good to be true. I smell cardstacking... Some of his predictions aren't as impressive as the others... and others are based on quite vague statements, such as in 2008 "giants" will fall, which is purportedly referring to the major banks that collapsed.

I would also deny any connection to Nostradamus because that guy's predictions are only true in the light of very heavy interpretation... an almost desperate search for some connection between his words and current events that doesn't rise above simple coincidence and probability.

Here are my predictions that will come true before 12 months expires.

The Dow will be below 5657
The FTSE will be below 3217
AIG will have been split into smaller companies.
Hungery will have applied to the IMF for a huge loan
My diplomacy score will have risen to 750 (it's 19 today)
A house will fall down in Kings Lynn, England for no apparent reason and
The number of people unemployed in the UK will get very close to 3m (but won't exceed that figure)

If we were all to write down our predictions for the next twelve months and then review them on the 19th March 2009, one of us will be uncannily accurate. Does that mean that they are the next Notradamus? I think not.

I can see no good coming out of people putting their faith in soothsayers. Sorry that was badly worded....

Through a hazy light I visual Cats and Dogs lying together as the future seekers weep.

Just for fun, post your predictions here and try to stop the thread slipping off the bottom.

My predictions.

Barack Obama will be crowned Emperor of Earth by global acclamation and bring about 1000 years of peace.

The Cubs will win the World Series.

There will be a serious military conflict between North Korea and one of its neighbors, possibly involving the US.

Star Trek will become cool after this summer's new movie.

I dont 'believe' him
but I do think what he says needs to be taken seriously
Toby Bartels (361 D)

How to get 1000 people to believe that you can predict the future:

Send out 64,000 emails making a clear, definite prediction about something that could go either way: half one way, half the other.
When that is resolved, send out 32,000 emails to the people that got the right answer last time (ignore the others) predicting something else: half one way, half the other way.
When that is resolved, send out 16,000 emails … you get the idea.

1000 people have just gotten 6 straight correct predictions from you; they're pretty impressed! Now's the time to sell them something.
Onar (131 D)

My prediction: Charletons will continue to sell things using Toby's method. People wilol continue to get mad at me for referring to them as 'charletons' (possibly due to misspellings). I will not improve my spelling skills.

@Toby - maybe you should invite 32000 to a free online roulette wheel and then after giving 1000 people the correct tip 6 times in a row they will give you almost anything to invest on the next spin. (PS can we go 50/50 on the winnings?)
Sicarius (673 D)

kinda hoping this would have been a serious thread. especially considering what he is predicting for the next few years
Chrispminis (916 D)
20 Mar 09 UTC
Sic, I can understand that, because what he is saying deeply resonates with what you've been telling us all this time. Hell, I'll be far more impressed with your predictions than his if this whole thing pans out the way you both say it's going to. Certainly it would seem most major news outlets consider him the ultimate trend analyzer, but you can understand my scepticism... right?

My predictions:

1.The American economy will stabilize by this time next year and will begin to make a recovery.

2. Obama will lead America to become more socialist and left, more in tune with what has happened in most of the rest of the developed world, and this trend will continue after his term(s) is/are over.

3. Stem cell research will offer relatively miraculous cures while circumventing common ethical dilemmas through alternative harvesting techniques by 2012.

4. The world will not end December 21st, 2012, but that won't stop believers from saying that while the world did not end, there was a noticeable change in the zeitgeist defined by some arbitrary and purely coincidental event, and then move their numerology and apocalypse up to the next popular date.

5.Marijuana for personal use will be legalized in Canada by 2015.

It's funny that if I made more specific descriptions of my predictions and I was wrong it would somehow be seen to undermine my entire prediction even if it was only wrong on a few certain specifics. For instance, in prediction #3, I could specify that by relatively miraculous I mean a heart grown tailor made for human transplant using stem cells converted from the patient's epithelial cells.

It would be fun if we kept a log of each of our top 5 predictions and see which of us is the most prescient. =)

What happens to a game that does not start with enough players?
If there's only 5 or 6 players, I know Italy and some other country start as CD.

But what happens if there's like...only two players? Does the game wait for more, or does it become a east vs. west game?

Just won a game, http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8371 , where the pot was 50 points. For winning with 18 SCs, I was awarded 18 points.
