Team Game Easy Does It Style
One of the aspects of Team Tournament Play is that the end result is more the sum of individual games rather than the sum of a team effort despite some efforts at back seat

Policy Change
I will stop my threads that do not have to do with Diplomacy. However, I will continue to start threads that are legitimate questions and suggestions. Also, I will post on threads when/if appropriate. Kestas, don't ban me for starting this thread; I just wanted to announce my new policy.

Tanks? Really?
Why are armies represented by tanks when tanks were not used until later in the First World War?

There are numerous poor matches for icons on the web.
One site has Sailboats and cannons for pieces.

The best ones I have seen are the artillery pieces and battleship profiles taken from the Hasbro 1999 board game and in use in one site only.

I have sent a set to Kestas but it is a low priority in their use maybe because of map size problems etc.

maybe because it really represents the land peice, and is obvious to everybody

Maybe. We may never know.

Because it isn't that important, other things (Private Messages outside games, proper solution to draw/pause etc.) are far more worth changing.

definately
Infantry or artillery pieces would be good choices for the land unit icons.

Is this what you meant by "diplomacy-related" topics? Because you should probably stop this too.

The main reason was that they were the best looking and most convenient icons I could get, they're from Freeciv and so I didn't have to worry about licensing

I haven't updated them since because I'm not so concerned about historical accuracy, it's a hassle to do, and I've found icons which represent WWI icons don't look as nice/don't fit into the map as well
Why are fleets only 1 centimeter long when clearly there were no actual ships that size?

becaus the map isn't the size of europe

my orginal set from like 40 years ago has stars for armies and anchors for fleets. is that ok?

can't we have several thousand little tiny soldiers to represent an army? I'm pretty sure people existed in 1901, and to make it real, no army would have been a legitamate fighting force unless there were several thousand of them.

And while we're at this exercise to rid ourselves of abstraction, because we don't have the mental capacity to abstract, if someone has what we call "100" points, can't we represent it like this to avoid the whole base 10 positional abstraction that our number system has forced on us?

****************************************************************************************************

I think these would be much better improvements than say - automatically killing off a 0SC power after a fall phase without waiting for a retreat, then a unit building phase.
Philcore, ou didnt even address my complaint of one centimeter fleets, so I certainly cannot get behind your fine suggestions.

Dingleberry - sorry I ddin't address your concerns. I agree - one centimeter ships, while they may have existed at some point (maybe even in 1901) have certainly NEVER been used in warfare - except maybe by the liliputions, but they were never fighting in Europe.

Come to think of it, The liliputions themselves were about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) from my understanding from the book. One of them alone would have sunk a 1 cm ship, so I can even rule them out as a realistic possibility. I second the 1000 foot fleet sugestion!!

I thought this thread was diplomacy-related. I mean, it discusses a vital topic, the symbol for an army.
Thank you for your belated attention Philcore. I fully support the idea of little men running around on the board. I also feel they should occasionally be able to go where they want, regardless of orders.

Philcore, what if the 0 sc unit retreated to an unoccupied supply center?

Fail or epic fail?

@bool: "Philcore, what if the 0 sc unit retreated to an unoccupied supply center?"

actually the reference in this thread was a sarcastic reference to another thread regarding the 0SC issue. I raised the point that you are refering to in that thread.

Two new games - 101 and 75 points each to join
Two new PPSC games:
101 points to join game ID 7740 (The End of the World As We Know It) - 36 hour turns
and
75 points to join game ID 7741 (“I do think you have to talk to enemies&rdqu) - 24 hour turns (the name for this latter game was intended to be a General Petraeus quote, “I do think you have to talk to enemies" - Petraeus... but apparently a quote followed by a dash translates into gibberish).
